Paving Project at Thompson Int’l Speedway Completed

Thompson, CT — America’s first asphalt racetrack is now sporting a brand new surface following months of planning and preparation work. The Thompson International Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut has been re-paved for only the second time in its sixty-year history.

Some two thousand tons of asphalt were laid down on the 5/8ths-mile oval during the two-day project, which was done by Palmer Paving, Inc. of Palmer, Massachusetts. A crew of nearly twenty-five workers and over a dozen pieces of equipment were required to pave the high-banked racetrack. The turns, with 25-degree bankings, posed the greatest challenge. However, the experienced crews used great care and their extensive knowledge to apply the final coat of asphalt so that it would smooth the entire racing surface and not change the historic contours of the famed speedway.

“We were beginning to get a little bit concerned about the weather, said track owner Don Hoenig. However, we all kept a close eye on the forecasts and when we saw two good days in a row projected, everything was put into motion to get the job done. Palmer Paving has been a great company to deal with because of their knowledge and experience in resurfacing racetracks, and the fact that they have the specialized equipment necessary to do the job right,” Hoenig concluded.

Thompson Int’l Speedway Releases 2001 Rules and Car Number Registration Forms Plus New Name for Strictly Stock Division

Thompson, CT — Thompson International Speedway today announced that the competition rules for the 2001 racing season are now ready. The rules will pertain to the Sunoco Modified, Pro Stock, Late Model, Limited Sportsman and Mini Stock divisions.

Each regular competitor at Thompson during the 2000 season will be receiving copies of their respective division’s rules in the mail with days. “We want to make it convenient for all of our competitors, said track owner Donald Hoenig. By mailing a copy to everyone who raced here regularly during the past year, there will be no delays and each team will have plenty of time to review the rules and make whatever changes are necessary,” he concluded.

The track also announced that the Strictly Stock division would now be called Limited Sportsman. “This division has grown so much in the past few years and has become such a great racing division, we felt that a name change was necessary,” said Hoenig.

Thompson Speedway Gets Major Face Lift

Thompson, CT — The roar of the racing engines has come to a halt. The swap meet vendors have left and the 2000 racing season is now over. Thompson International Speedway should be ready for its long winter’s nap.

However, since taking control of the historic race track again at the beginning of the 2000 season, owner Donald Hoenig and his son D.R. have not stopped in their efforts to improve their historic speed plant. Work has gone on all season long and now one of the major goals of this dynamic duo is about to be realized.

Palmer Paving of Palmer, Massachusetts has moved in a massive collection of equipment in preparation for the long-awaited re-paving of the speedway. “This is a project we have wanted to do for some time, said Hoenig. The current surface lasted over thirty years but had reached a point where we knew that the paving job would have to be done this year. It would have been nice to have been able to do it in the early spring, but with the situation as it was then, the paving job had to be postponed until now.”
