A Commitment To The Modifieds

Waterford Speedbowl’s commitment to the Modified is unsurpassed. The’Bowl has been crowning Modified champions for 57 seasons – from Hall of Famer Dave Humphrey in 1953 to Rob Janovic Jr. in 2007.

The quest to join that list begins anew in the SK-150, the showcase of the 11h annual Modified Nationals April 12-13. The SKs will share the spotlight with nine other divisions in the two-day Nationals. One of the first extra-money, extra-distance events for the divisions, the “150” remains one of the SK races anywhere.

The Modified Nationals was the first race to feature SK time trial. It remains one of the few who continue to do.

While there are management/ownership changes at the ‘Bowl, it moves remains dedicated to a sterling history. The list of champions includes Hall of Famers Red Foote, Bill Slater, Don Collins and Bob Potter in addition to Humphrey and other legendary drivers like Moose Hewitt, Dick Beauregard and Jimmy Broderick.

Jeff Pearl hopes to become only the second to win back-to-back SK-150s, joining Eric Berndt (1902-03. Janovic and Dennis Gada, neither of which owns a 150 trophy, are both eying a victory. Janovic will begin his quest of a second straight championship at the 150 while Dennis Gada starts out after a record seventh. A poor finish last year was a major hurdle in Gada’s effort last summer.

Championship runs also begin for the Late Models, Sportsman and Mini Stock divisions – all part of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series – along with the Legends at the Nationals.

The Northeastern Midget Association, Pro4 Modifieds, AllStar Race Trucks and Allison Legacy Cars will be at Nationals as well. All qualifying, including the SK time trials, will be on Saturday with the Pro4, Truck, Legends and Legacy Car features to follow.

Extra distance races for the Late Models (50), Sportsman (30) and Mini Stocks (30) and a 25-lap Midget will share Sunday with the SK-150.
