Back To School Bash At Bowl’ A “Smashing” Success

Waterford, CT — Witnessed by a large, hearty crowd on Sunday night it was absolute pandemonium as the annual “Back To School Bash” turned the shoreline oval into a loud, smoky arena of mechanized mayhem.

Starting the proceedings it was the always-popular “Burnout Contest” which was won by Groton’s Mark Shafer with a high-score of 10.75, his machine emitting a potent burnt-rubber tinged smoky cloud of white fog over the facility.

Stoehr Edges Frankoski at Monadnock

Winchester, NH — Starting third, Greg Stoehr took the lead with one lap in the books and then held on to capture the 25-lap Northeastern Midget Association feature Saturday night at Monadnock Speedway. It was the second win of the year for Stoehr in the family 26b.

Stoehr, spending most of the late stages in traffic, had a two-car length lead on Jeremy Frankoski (Bertrand 47b) at the checkered with Ryan Preece (Santos 98s) a close third. Twenty-four laps of green-flag racing resulted in battles, often three-wide, for position almost all the way back.

Wings & Wheels a Fundraising Triumph for Racing Against Cancer

Westbrook, CT — Weeks later it is still the talk of the close-knit racing community, but the effects of the Racing Against Cancer TM “Wings and Wheels” presented by Foxwoods and KOOL 101 event will be much more far-reaching. By itself that race card was thrilling. Add to it the implications of the fundraiser and the night was nothing short of magical. With $2 from the sale of every adult grandstand admission ticket going to the Racing Against Cancer TM Program the night was a successful fundraiser as a packed house came to enjoy a night of racing excellence.

Rudolph Impressive at Mansfield-Oswego This Coming Weekend

Last weekend Erick Rudolph and the DeLange Racing team headed west for their inaugural visit to the Buckeye State at Mansfield Motorsports Park in Mansfield, Ohio. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour was running the Whelen 150 as part of a doubleheader program that also included the NASCAR Camping World Series East. It was a prime opportunity for the teenage racer to get some valuable exposure and as usual, “The Kid” was equal to the task at hand.

Erick and the crew had the #45 Original Pizza Logs/PrimeTyme Motorsports/Brigham Concrete Modified out for some early practice by mid-morning and made the most of that valuable period. When it was time for qualifying Rudolph turned a very impressive lap that would place him 15th on the starting grid for the feature. After that the team made some final adjustments during the Camping World feature and prepared for the forthcoming battle. Finally it was time to go racing.

Three in a row has not happened in NEMA since 1993 when Jeff Horn, diving for Bay Hayes, did it at Seekonk (May 29), Star (June 13) and Waterford (June 26). Cabral comes into the race off wins at Seekonk’s Boston Louie and Waterford’s Wings & Wheels.

Dillon Moltz Wins N.E. Dodge Dealers 100 for Extra Distance Sweep at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway returned to racing action on Friday, August 22nd with the 14th Annual New England Dodge Dealers Late Model 100. Stafford’s Late Model division took center stage with their second extra distance event of the 2008 season on tap and it was Dillon Moltz taking down the victory ahead of Ryan Posocco. Moltz’s victory was a repeat of his 100-lap victory in June and cements him as the Late Model extra distance king of the 2008 season. Frank Ruocco nailed down his second win of the season in the 40-lap SK Modified® feature, Mark Bakaj scored his third win of 2008 in 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Carla Botticello scored her first career Limited Late Model victory in the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, and Scott Roy took down win number two of the 2008 season in the 15-lap DARE Stock feature event.

The 100-lap Late Model saw Dillon Moltz cement himself as the king of the extra distance race by scoring an extra distance sweep by outdueling Ryan Posocco and Michael Bennett in a wild finish. The N.E. Dodge Dealers Late Model 100 took the green with Scott Cook setting the early pace. Cook led the first 8 laps before giving way to Dillon Moltz for the lead on lap-9. Moltz then held the race lead until lap-62 when Woody Pitkat moved to the front of the field. Pitkat’s time out front was short as Moltz took the lead back on lap-68. Moltz was still in front of the field when the caution came out with 94 laps complete and set up a wild finish. On the lap-95 restart, Michael Bennett moved from third to the lead in a power move with Moltz falling back to second and Ryan Posocco third. Bennett drifted up the track on lap-97 and Moltz moved back to the lead with Posocco in tow. Posocco was not able to get by Moltz over the final 2 laps and Moltz took the checkered flag for his fourth victory of the 2008 season. Posocco finished second with Pitkat, Bennett, and Dave Wray rounding out the top-5.

Fred Astle Flies to fifth win, capturing the ‘Miller Gold Cup Classic’

Lenny Guy and John Hanafin notch first career wins while Ryan Lineham repeats in the Street Stocks.

Seekonk, MA — Fred Astle of Westport MA picked up his fifth win of the season, and added a slight cushion in the championship chase, with his win in the Miller Gold Cup Classic 75 lap main event Saturday night. Fred started on the inside of the fifth row, and using the outside lane, charged into the top five by lap eight. Matt Hudon of Acushnet took the early lead from Scituate’s Steve O’Brien on the opening laps, and started to put some distance between he and the rest of the field. Scott Dion moved into second by lap eight, as he went around the Autopart International Chevy of O’Brien, and started to put pressure on the Honey Dew Donuts Chevy of Hudon. Behind O’Brien at this point were Tom Scully Sr, Fred Astle, Mike Brightman and Dave Darling, as they settled in.

Steve O’Brien got crossed up coming off of turn two on lap seven, and caused Sr Scully to back off slightly. When this happened, Astle and Brightman shot to the outside and picked up a couple of positions each. While they were battling for positions, Tom Scully Jr was working his way through the grid toward the front of the field. Scott Dion was moving his Douglas A King Builders Chevy to the inside lane and picked up the lead on lap 21. Astle had caught the lead duo at this time, and followed Dion into second. Hudon started to lose the handles on the T & J Frye Trucking Chevy, and started to backslide. Dave Darling had worked his way up on the outside and moved the Johnson Landscaping Dodge into the top five. Astle wasn’t going to ride in second for very long, moving the Wood Frame Structures Chevy to the outside of Dion to battle for the lead.
