Rob Summers Will Be Busy At Bowl’s Wings & Wheels

Waterford, CT — Rob Summers, who never tires singing the praises of Waterford Speedbowl, will be getting plenty of it Saturday night. Summers is entered in three of the four divisions that make up the Racing Against Cancer Wings & Wheels presented by Foxwoods and Kool 101.

The 2005 Speedbowl SK champion, Summers will be in Howie Lane’s 97 in the 50-lap International Super Modified Association (ISMA) feature. He’ll drive Gary Casella’s #25 in the 100-lap True Value Modified Series event and his own 11 in the SK-Modified 35-lapper.

A 25-lap Northeastern Midget Association race completes the action. A portion of every ticket will go to Racing Against Cancer. The gates open at 3:30 PM and racing begins at 5.

Johnny Kay Passes at 85

New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame member Johnny Kay, an outstanding Midget driver for over 25 years, died Monday, Aug. 11. He was 85.

A win in the 1954 “Night Before the 500″ at Indianapolis’ 16th Street was the crowning event for Kay who posted victories under a number of banners including ARDC, AAA, USAC and NEMA from the post War 1940s through the 1960s. He was the second alternate at the 1956 Indianapolis 500.

NEMA Back To The Bowl; Record Lap Probable

Although he insists, “lap times are never first priority,” point leader Randy Cabral admits, “they get a lot of attention.” His 12.74 seconds lap could “definitely be bested” when the Northeastern Midget Association returns to Waterford Speedbowl Saturday night for the Racing Against Cancer Wings & Wheels presented by Foxwoods and Kool 101.

Making its fourth Speedbowl visit of the season, NEMA shares the program with the International Supermodified Association, the True Value Modifieds and the SK-Modifieds.

Late Season Roll Has Strunk In NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Title Hunt

Daytona Beach, FL — Like most drivers, Jeff Strunk says he doesn’t start paying attention to the track points standings until the season begins to draw to a close. But thanks to his recent strong run, the six-time Modified champion at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., has one more thing to keep his eye on.

Strunk has won three of his last six races to build a sizable lead in the track’s top division and has put himself in position for title No. 7. His victory this past weekend on the 1/3-mile dirt track gave him four wins and 16 top fives in 17 starts and moved him up to seventh in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points standings.

Speedbowl Ready For Wings & Wheels

Waterford, CT — Geography – length, width, surface – makes Waterford Speedbowl an ideal spot for Saturday night’s Racing Against Cancer Wings & Wheels presented by Foxwoods and Kool 101.

Three of the four fastest short track divisions in the Northeast, led by the International Super Modified Racing Association, are due. The Supers will be joined by the Northeastern Midget Association, the True Value Modified Series and the Speedbowl’s SK-Modifieds.
