Waterford, CT — A $5,000 “bonus” awaits the driver who can capture both SK-Modifieds features at Saturday night’s Double Down Shootout presented by Mohegan Sun at Waterford Speedbowl. Should that happen, five fans will get away with a cool grand ($1,000) apiece.
All four Whelen All-American Series divisions will run double features – 25 lappers for the SKs and Late Models; 15 lappers for the Sportsman and Mini Stocks. The second features line up in reverse order of the first feature finish. It amounts to 130 laps of feature racing.
The first 500 adult fans through the gates will receive a free hat. The gates open at 4 PM and the racing gets underway at 7. Adults will be asked to enter the Double Down Sweepstakes at the gate. If a SK sweep is accomplished, they’ll be five $1,000 winners. Rules are at www.Speedowl.com.
The Double Down is the opening act of the Speedbowl’s traditional Labor Day weekend doubleheader. The Back to School Bash, featuring school bus demos, is on the agenda for Sunday.
Saturday night’s strategy is no secret – get to the front as fast as you can.
With 10 different winners in ’08, a SK sweep will not be an easy chore. Still, the “extra loot” is expected to draw a strong field led by current point leader Dennis Gada and five-time winner Keith Rocco. Gada is currently 28 points up on Rocco with ’07 champion Rob Janovic Jr. 52 behind in third.
There are seven drivers – add Jeffrey Paul, Ron Yuhas Jr., Tyler Chadwick and Jeff Pearl to the mix – battling for the top five spots in the final standings. All have been winners this year. Shawn Monahan became the tenth winner last week.
Pedal-to-the-metal action is expected in the other divisions as well, the payoffs based on the average finish. Bruce Thomas will take a 58-point lead on Tim Jordan into the Late Model action. Vinnie Esposito is 84 back in third.
Mini Stock leader Ken Cassidy Jr. is 36 up on archrival Randy Churchill Jr. in the Mini Stock standings while Al Stone III leads Ronnie Oldham Jr. (-62) and Walt Hovey (-72) in the Sportsman rundown.
