Laps for Lupus set for Speedbowl on July 18

Waterford, CT — Saturday night July 18 will mark a special night at the Waterford Speedbowl.  Not only will the Wild ‘n Wacky race program have its first opportunity ever to shine under the lights on a Saturday night, but the day’s activities will also feature a special charitable partner.  The Speedbowl will host “Laps for Lupus”, benefitting the Lupus Foundation of America’s (LFA) Connecticut Chapter.  Among the planned fundraising festivities are a special Track Walk, silent auction, as well as hospitality for donors and special guests.

Operating successful benefit walks in other parts of the state, July 18 is LFA Connecticut Chapter’s first charitable walk in Southeastern Connecticut.  Race fans as well as supporters of LFA and its fundraising efforts are welcomed to attend.  Check-in will occur at 2:00pm under the hospitality tent behind turn 1 of the Speedbowl, with the track walk taking the green flag at 3:00pm.  Following the walk, participants making a donation benefitting Lupus receive a Speedbowl-style BBQ under the hospitality tent plus admission into the night’s racing.   The required donation is just $15 for adults and $5 for kids under the age of 14, with all net proceeds benefitting the LFA’s Connecticut Chapter.

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects over 1.6 million people in the United States and 17,000 in Connecticut alone.  Women are more likely than men to have the disease, and recently a rise in incidences among children and teens have been diagnosed.   People of color are three times more likely than others to have Lupus.   Because symptoms are so widely varied, Lupus is not easy to diagnose.  Lupus Foundation of America’s Connecticut Chapter was established in 1973 as a non-profit agency.  Since inception their mission has been to help support those affected by Lupus and to help find a cure.  To date, the Connecticut Chapter has funded over $800,000 in Lupus research.

The ‘Bowl’s Wild ‘n Wacky program got its start nine years ago as a cost effective alternative for both fans and racers alike.  Its growth in the early years skyrocketed exponentially, blossoming into a fun filled night for fans of all ages featuring three and sometimes four-wide racing with entry level divisions for four and eight cylinder stock cars, along with the popular Legends Car Series.   With races often featuring 30 cars and more, non-stop action is the norm.

A full evening of racing is set to begin at 6:15pm with qualifying for the Legends Cars, which compete in a 50-lap main event earning the winner a guaranteed qualified spot in the Legends Car Nationals in Georgia later this year.  Main events begin at 7:00pm with extra-distance races for not only the Legends Cars, but also special 30-lap races for the X-Car and Super X-Car divisions.  The X-Modifieds, Bandolero’s, and an unpredictable wacky race round out the program.

Admission is just $8 for adults, with all youth age 14 & under free.   For more information on this or other upcoming events, please visit www.speedbowl.com or contact the Speedbowl track office at 860.442.1585.
