Cardile, Flannery, & Casagrande Score CARQUEST Extra Distance Night Feature Victories at Stafford Motor Speedway

Stafford Motor Speedway kicked off its Friday night NASCAR Whelen All-American Series with a special CARQUEST Extra Distance Night consisting of extra distance feature events for Stafford’s SK Light Modified, Limited Late Model, and DARE Stock divisions. Frank Cardile took the checkered flag in the 30-lap SK Light Modified feature, Dan Flannery won the 25-lap Limited Late Model feature, and Kyle Casagrande won the 20-lap DARE Stock feature. Stafford Motor Speedway returns to racing tomorrow afternoon with the rescheduled CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler with the SK Modifieds®, Late Models, and Whelen Modified Tour taking to the track.

In the 30-lap SK Light Modified feature event, there was a spin to bring the yellow out before a lap could be completed. Harry Wheeler led the field to green, but Jay Goff had a strong run in the outside groove and powered past Wheeler for the race lead. Frank Cardile followed Goff past Wheeler to drop Wheeler back to third place. On lap-3, Wheeler got loose and spun in turn 2, but was able to continue and the race stayed under green. Debris brought the yellow back out with the completion of the third lap.

Goff held the lead on the restart, but the car on the move was John Hanafin, who moved from fourth to second behind Goff. Cardile settled into third, with Kyle Spencer and Tony Santangelo behind them. A spin by Harry Wheeler and Zach Aszklar with 9 laps complete slowed the action.

The Trinity

We will take a break in our study for one week. Rev. Dan is sharing with us some of his thoughts with us this week. We will get back to our study of the last words of Christ next week.

Don and I get a lot of questions about the relationship between the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit and what they do. I recently read a daily devotion written by Ryan Dinunzio a former professional soccer player that I wanted to summarize and share with you. It should make it easier for all of us to understand the roles they play. He called it the NASCAR Trinity and related very nicely the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to the Spotter, Crew Chief and Pit crew.

What is the role of the crew chief? He oversee’s all the changes to the car – before, during and after the race. To be successful, the driver and crew chief have to have a good relationship and be able to communicate well with each other. The driver tells the crew chief what the car is doing, how it is handling, and what he thinks is wrong. In turn, the crew chief tells the driver what can and cannot be changed. Look at Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham or Jimmy Johnson and Chad Knaus and how well they work (or worked) together – they both have multiple championships to prove this.

Whelen Modified Tour Set For Second Shot At Stafford

Tech-Net Spring Sizzler To Run This Saturday

Daytona Beach, FL —  Originally scheduled for April 25, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s race at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway is now set to take place this Saturday, May 1.

The Tech-Net Spring Sizzler presented by CARQUEST was to be the season-opening weekend for Stafford, and the second race of the year for the Whelen Modified Tour. Practice and qualifying took place last Saturday, April 24, under sunny skies. But when raceday rolled around, the rain rolled in, so the event was postponed to this weekend.

There have been slight alterations to the raceday schedule for this Saturday’s make-up date. Prior to the race the CARQUEST Belts & Hose Pit Party – the on-track autograph session – will now take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The 33 cars of the Whelen Modified Tour will then get a 30-minute practice session starting at 1 p.m.

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway’s 2010 Contingency Program has added a new partner in Darrell Yarborough Nationwide Insurance. Thanks to the Darrell Yarborough Agency, each Stafford SK Light Modified third place finisher will leave the track with an extra $50 in their pockets. With 23 events on the 2010 calendar, SK Light competitors can take home an additional $1,150 during the 2010 season.

We’re all race fans at heart and we’re looking forward to lending a helping hand to the SK Light Modified competitors at Stafford Motor Speedway this season. ACT 2010 Post Season Awards Top $100,000

The American Canadian Tour (ACT) will celebrate twenty-five years of sanctioning and managing stock car races in 2010, and the quarter century old sanctioning body will award its race teams with over $100,000.00 in post-season awards. This will mark the first season the various point funds have topped the century mark.

“Our Late Model program has grown significantly over the past decade. ACT has tried to maintain the balance between keeping this division cost-effective, whether it is weekly racing or Tour racing. Most of our Tour competitors, and those weekly racers that have supported the ACT Late Model rules formula, are primarily focused on winning championships, which is the way it should be. It is still great that we can reward the teams with some financial awards at the end of a long season of racing,” said Darla Hartt, Vice President of the American Canadian Tour.

Both the US and the Castrol Tours will pay the Champions a bonus of $10,000 this season. Total awards will be over $80,000 for the two touring series. The “King of the Road” will receive $5,000, and there will be over $20,000 in point fund money awarded to the Thunder Road competitors.

Bush First To Utilize SPEC Motor Full-Time In Modified Tours

Affordable Power Plant Allows Long Islander To Go Racing

Daytona Beach, FL –A few years back NASCAR and Wegner Motorsports set out to develop an engine that would provide an economical alternative for teams that wanted to compete at the touring series level. While NASCAR K&N Pro Series teams have powered their cars almost exclusively with the engines in recent seasons, Johnny Bush has become the first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver to run it full-time in 2010. In fact, it is because of the SPEC that Bush even makes it to the track this year.

Bush, from Huntington Station on New York’s Long Island, has been in the game a long time. The 55-year-old was racing long before he made his Whelen Modified Tour debut with seven races in 1991 and followed that with what turned out to be a career-high 18 starts in 1992. After running part-time in three of the next four seasons, Bush made just one start in 1997 and then walked away from Tour racing for more than a decade.

“For financial reasons, there was no way I could [continue to] run,” Bush said. “I just couldn’t compete anymore, so we had to put it away for a while.”

Ramstrom Eyes More Super Late Model Starts

W. Boylston, MA — Hoping to capitalize on the momentum created earlier this month at the season-opening Icebreaker event at his home track, Derek Ramstrom has altered his 2010 racing plans.

The youngest track champion in Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway history, Ramstrom will attempt to win a second consecutive title in the track’s Super Late Model division. After winning both ends of an Icebreaker doubleheader for the Super Late Models, Ramstrom took a hard look at returning to weekly competition full-time.

“It’s a good opportunity and to go out and try and repeat,” said Ramstrom, 18, who originally planned to race only a partial schedule at Thompson. “I have a lot of track time there now, and every week I seem to run better and better. I’m just more on top of my game when I race there and know I can win the championship again.

20 Years of Motorsports Magic at New Hampshire Motor Speedway: Rusty Wallace and Crew Shine in New Hampshire Inaugural Cup Series Race

Loudon, NH — On July 11, 1993, all eyes were on the Northeast as New Hampshire Motor Speedway held its inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race, the Slick 50 300.

In arguably one of his most successful seasons, Rusty Wallace endured the 100 degree plus temperatures to take home the very first checkered flag at “The Magic Mile.”

Driving the No. 2 Miller Genuine Draft Pontiac owned by Roger Penske, Wallace qualified 33rd at the speed of 123.618 mph. With lightening fast pit stops and great strategy, he gradually worked his way to the front, taking the lead on lap 168.

Ford Blue Oval Challenge Winners Share Bumps Up to $5000

The American Canadian Tour (ACT) announced today that the highly anticipated Ford Blue Oval Challenge winner’s share of the overall point fund has been increased from $3,000 up to $5,000 to win. A lucrative Ford contingency program was announced late last fall for the teams on both the ACT US and Castrol programs. Also, all Ford teams running at approved affiliate ACT tracks will be eligible to receive bonus money in the Blue Oval Challenge Cup portion of the overall program. Mike Delahanty, the Program Manager-Sportsman Circle Track Racing for the Ford Racing Technology Division of Ford Racing, announced last February the program for ACT Ford competitors. It is one of the richest contingency programs in the history of ACT with over $35,000 up for grabs among the region’s Ford crate teams.

“I know all the Ford teams that are associated with ACT are very appreciative of the support Ford Racing has given those teams that are supporting them,” said ACT President Tom Curley. “We have at least 10 teams that will be receiving points for this program in the 2010 season in both Tour racing and weekly racing. The jump from $3,000 to win the inaugural Blue Oval Challenge Cup to $5,000 certainly speaks to Ford’s commitment to short track racing in our region,” finished Curley.

Over the past couple of years, the Ford-powered S347JR was researched and developed by Ford racing with assistance from Butler & MacMaster Engines from Hallowell, ME. “We are excited to be part of the ACT Ford racing program,” said Dave MacMaster, the chief architect and the single individual most responsible for the 10-year success of the ACT GM type crate revolution, which has now become popular across the entire country. “When you look at the high caliber ACT teams that have taken on the Ford crates going into 2010, I think that is a very healthy sign for short track racing in our neck of the woods,” concluded MacMaster.

Rocco Scores Third Win at Waterford; Sears, Williams, Payne & Flannery Get First Wins

Waterford, CT — An entertaining night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing took place at Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night. Keith Rocco returned to Victory Lane to score his third SK Modified® win of the year in just four events. Norm Sears was a first time winner in the Street Stocks and Chris Williams won for the first time in nearly a year in the Norwich Bulletin Mini Stocks. Howard Payne was the victor in the A.B. CDL Training Center Trucks and it was Anthony Flannery taking the win for the Legends Cars.

The SK Modifieds® rebounded from two weeks ago with an exciting 35-lap race. Kyle James raced to the early lead of the event over Tom Abele Jr. and Diego Monahan. On lap seven the first caution flag of the event waved on lap seven when Tyler Chadwick tangled with Todd Ceravolo in turn two sending both cars spinning.

On the restart James prevailed over Abele, but Monahan began turning up the heat. He moved inside and past Abele and pressured the newcomer to the division for the race lead. James countered with his own moves to thwart off Monahan’s challenges. Meanwhile Jeff Paul was looking strong and moved into third. Further back, Rocco and Ron Yuhas Jr. were mired in traffic battling at the back half of the top ten.

Paradise

Answered prayers hold the promise of hope. They let us know that God hears our requests and provides for our needs. Last week the first words Christ spoke from the cross involved a prayer for those who crucified him. This week as he spoke he answered a prayer. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

When things are hopeless, when the future looks dim, when we cannot see what tomorrow holds for us we turn to God and ask for his help. That is prayer, a conversation with God. Does he hear them? Does he answer them? That depends on if you have a relationship with him.

You and I both know it is easier to receive help from someone you know. I have said it many times at the track, the willingness to help one another make it a special group of people to be around. I have seen it many times, teams helping teams so that they could race. We all understand the challenges to get to the track and have your car ready. Then something breaks and you don’t have a spare. That is when you know who your friends are.

Stafford Springs, CT — With the addition of three more teams this week, there are now 37 Whelen Modified Tour teams that have filed an entry blank with NASCAR and Stafford Motor Speedway to compete for a starting position in the 33-car field for the 39th Annual CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, scheduled for April 24 & 25.

Leading the way among the 37 teams that have filed an entry for “The Greatest Race in the History of Spring” are the two winningest drivers in Sizzler history, Ted Christopher and Mike Stefanik. Between them, Christopher and Stefanik account for a grand total of 9 Spring Sizzler events. Christopher’s win in last year’s CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler broke a tie with Stefanik for the most career Sizzler victories. The win was also the second consecutive Spring Sizzler victory for Christopher, and if Christopher can win this year’s CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, he will join Maynard Troyer as the only drivers in the race’s 39-year history to win three consecutive Sizzler events.

Christopher’s attempt at a Sizzler three-peat this year will be the 8th time that a driver has put himself into position for the difficult task. Stefanik has attempted the Sizzler 3-peat on two different occasions with this year’s CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler marking Christopher’s second attempt at the Sizzler 3-peat as well. Other drivers who have tried for the Sizzler 3-peat include Richie Evans, Troyer, Mike Ewanitsko, and Rick Fuller, with Troyer the only driver to find success in the quest for three consecutive CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler victories.
