Mekkelsen RV will present the 48th annual Memorial Day Classic at Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT this Sunday, May 30. For the third year the Modified Racing Series (MRS), presented by Bob Valenti AutoMall, will join the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Thunder Road Late Models in the twin bill. Each division will race 100 lap features.
The Memorial Day tradition has been going on at the high-banked oval for nearly half a century. Beginning in 1961, the list of winners is a great tribute to some of the men who helped build stock car racing in the northeast. That tradition continues this Memorial weekend.
A favorite to repeat his win from last season’s Memorial Day Classic is David Pembroke from Middlesex, Vermont. “I guess we have some momentum after our win at Devil’s Bowl last weekend, but this Memorial Day race is really a tough one to win. There are so many capable teams that run in championship form at Thunder Road, and they all want to be on that granite monument behind the tower,” said two-time winner Pembroke.

Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl management continues to press forward with facility upgrade projects during the track’s 60th anniversary season.
As fans and racers alike arrive at southeastern Connecticut’s center of speed for this weekend’s events, they will notice several tons of asphalt millings spread and rolled throughout the facility. The primary driveway entering the property from Route 85, the driveway leading to the North Pit area behind turns one and two, and a portion of the North Pit area will receive the treatment. In addition, the handicap accessible and VIP parking areas will also be rolled with the product.
“We are continuing our commitment to our racers and fans with projects to improve the facility” offered track owner and promoter Terry Eames. “We hope this makes the fan and racer experience at the Speedbowl that much more enjoyable and convenient.”

Thompson, CT — More than two thousand dollars have been added to the June 3rd Tour-Type Modified race at Thompson. Each competitor will all have an equal chance to pick up some of the additional money due to the unique way this program will work.
Brad LaFontaine, of Northeast Race Cars and Parts, organized the effort to raise the additional money and has asked that it be distributed to competitors through random drawings of all competing car numbers. Each lap will be worth at least $50.00 in cash or gift cards with lap four offering a $100.00 fuel gift card. In addition, a special $50.00 gift card will be given to a competitor who will be selected by officials at the conclusion of the event.
“I really don’t want to call this lap money, said LaFontaine. It is bonus money and everyone in the race will have a chance to win some of it. The only exception to this is the special ½ way award. At the half way point in the race (20th lap), the leader will receive a bonus certificate which is being offered by Pro Shocks. I think this approach will provide an additional incentive to every competitor in the 40-lap shoot out,” concluded LaFontaine.
