Canaan, NH– Starting third in a 24 car field, Eric Goodale of Wading River, NY, took the lead on lap 13 and went on to win the Modified Racing Series, sponsored by BobValentiAutoMall.Com, 112 lap, Ricky Miller Memorial Race, Saturday night, at the Canaan Fair Speedway, Canaan, NH. It was Goodale’s first win with the series. He also became the ninth different winner in ten races this season.
Pole sitter Jon McKennedy East Chelmsford, MA., led the first 12 laps giving up the lead position to Goodale on lap 13. Goodale was pursued by Steven Masse, Bellingham, MA., for several laps, Mike Holdridge, Madison, CT., and then Dwight Jarvis, Ascutney, VT. The race was slowed on lap 101 for a caution period that closed up the field. On the restart, Jarvis tried every move possible to get by the race leader but Goodale was equal to the task.
At the finish, Goodale beat Jarvis by .149 seconds with McKennedy .141 seconds behind Jarvis.

Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl beat the evening’s heavy downpours from Mother Nature to complete Nostalgia Night featuring exhibition racing from vintage racing groups, the Shane Hammond Memorial event for the NEMA Midgets plus four-divisions of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing. Salem’s Jeff Pearl returned to the winner’s circle to claim his 33rd career SK Modified® win. Tim Jordan of Plainfield and Dan Field of Deep River used wins in the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model and Norwich Bulletin Mini Stock feature races to stay out front in their respective division point battles. Andover’s Norm Sears won his second Street Stock race in dominant fashion, while Massachusetts drivers Russ Stoehr and Randy Cabral split the NEMA Midget and NEMA Lite Shane Hammond Memorial races.
The 35-lap SK Modified® race thundered out onto the track with Diego Monahan and Joe Perry leading the field to the green flag. Monahan took the race lead and with just one lap complete Doug Coby came to rest in turn four with a flat left rear tire, bringing out the first caution flag. Monahan would take back over and held his lead through two additional early incidents.
When racing settled in, Monahan was out front by two lengths over Perry. Joe Gada was third with Tom Abele holding down fourth. Ron Yuhas Jr. and Pearl put down the best battle on the track for fifth on lap 10. Pearl came to life in the outside lane, moving back by Yuhas on lap 11 after spending several laps to his outside and then pulled outside Abele for fourth. Abele bobbled on lap 14 between turns one and two causing his car to snap back up the track to create a more serious altercation that collected Jeff Paul, Rob Janovic Jr., Adam Gada and Glen Pressell III. All but Paul were done for the night after their contact.

Sandusky, OH — London, Ontario’s Mark Sammut finally won his first and second winged ISMA features in 2009 after more than a decade of trying. He finished runner-up in ISMA points at year’s end. But, 2010 had not gone as well as the 78 team would have liked. In the first five races of the ISMA season, their best finish had been a sixth, that is until Saturday night’s 33rd annual Hy-Miler Nationals at Sandusky Speedway. Sammut took the early lead, lost it to fellow Canadian Mike Lichty and then quietly stayed with the 84 until he was ready to reclaim the point. On lap 77 Sammut pulled alongside Lichty. The duo ran side by side until turn four when Sammut plucked the Hy-Miler prize. It was Sammut’s race to lose now, and for the final 22 laps he held on for the biggest win of his supermodified career. He also became only the second Canadian to win the prestigious Hy-Miler race; the first being Dave McKnight in 2001. Sammut recapped his road to victory.
“This is something. We had a really bad car all weekend long. We kept messing with it and messing with it. Finally before time trials today we thought it was coming around so we just pushed it a bit in that direction. We had a decent run in time trials. We had a decent run in the heat. I knew then that if we could stick with it we’d have a good car at the end of 100 laps. And we did. It was great.
“I had a touch more when Mike went by me. I knew I couldn’t go that pace and have anything left at the end so I just kind of let him go. I was just hoping I’d get some breaks and get back to him. If we didn’t, there was nothing I could do about it. As it turned out it worked out perfect. We were right where we wanted to be at the end of the race!

Hudson, NH’s Joey “Pole” Polewarczyk, Jr. earned Ford its first ACT Late Model Tour win at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, ME on Saturday, July 24. Pole moved from his fourth starting position to take the lead on lap 14. He held the lead and lapped the majority of the field until lap 83.
On the lap 83 restart Pole lost the lead to Farmington, ME’s Jeff Taylor, who also competes with a Ford crate engine. Taylor held onto the lead for 13 laps before Pole took back over for good. Taylor remained in second until he blew a tire with just under 20 laps remaining.
Pole held off rookie, and fellow Ford crate motor competitor, Austin Theriault who picked up his best career ACT finish with a second. Tim Brackett took third, Corey Morgan fourth and John Donahue with another Ford earned fifth.

Winchester, NH — Without missing a beat, Todd Szegedy offers his opinions on everything from the health of NASCAR to the future of the Whelen Modified Tour, from his fellow competitors to the variety of tracks where Modified racing succeeds.
He’s on point with virtually all of them, too, but there is apparently one topic that gets him to clam up.
“Do you remember a point in your career where you realized you’d become a veteran voice in Modified racing?” Szegedy is asked as he pokes at a plate of pasta salad between practice sessions at Monadnock Speedway recently.
He pauses, and looks up.
“What I don’t like is being called a veteran. I think that’s crazy,” Szegedy said. “I haven’t earned the right to be called a veteran yet. I’ve won a championship, sure, but I haven’t earned that right. If I’m still racing in my 40s, sure, you can call me a veteran, but I don’t consider myself that at all.”

Stafford Springs, CT — With the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returning to Stafford Motor Speedway on August 6 for the 20th Annual Town Fair Tire 150, the race presents another opportunity for Eric Berndt and the #54 North End Auto Parts team to collect their first Whelen Modified Tour victory.
Berndt nearly won the Whelen Modified Tour’s previous visit to Stafford, the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 in May. Berndt started the race in fourth and he took the lead from Bobby Santos on lap-11. Berndt had built up a large lead over the rest of the field, but a caution with 22 laps to go erased Berndt’s large lead and he lost the lead to Santos one lap after the restart and faded back to 6th place at the checkered flag. Berndt led 101 of the race’s 137 laps and he is looking forward to returning to Stafford and taking another shot at capturing his first career Whelen Modified Tour victory.
“We were real happy with how we ran the last time out at Stafford, but disappointed at how we finished the race,” said Berndt. “I think I beat the car up a little too much early on and I didn’t have anything left. We weren’t happy to see that caution flag for sure. I feel like we’re right on the doorstep to that first win and hopefully we can knock that door down when we come back to Stafford.”

As I said last week, we are all familiar with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. We know what is right and want to do the right thing, but there is still that voice in there that tells us we can do what we want. Let’s continue as we close out our discussion of the internal struggle that challenges each one of us. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Have you ever tried to stretch your car to the end of the race? Avoiding the pit stop and hoping you had enough to make it. Sometimes we don’t make it. Sometimes we fall short of the finish line. We need to take the proper steps to finish the race in such a way as to win.
As we talked last week we discussed the internal struggle and the spiritual birth that needs to take place in each one of us. We continue that discussion this week. Let take a look at how should make the right adjustment in our lives.

Seekonk, MA — For the second consecutive year, Seekonk Speedway’s Open Wheel Wednesday has been postponed due to rain. With practice just completed, a light rain started to fall. The skies opened up a few minutes later the skies opened up, and with a forecast of continued rain and thunderstorms, management was forced to pull the plug.
Over 20 modifieds were on hand to try and wrestle the $10,000 grand prize from the Vendetti’s hands. Three former winners were on hand to become the first to repeat. Kirk Alexander, Vinnie Annarummo and Matt Hirschman were ready to fight with many top modifieds from the Northeast. The car that sat in Victory Lane the previous two years, Wayne Darling’s Furnace & Duct was on hand with a new shoe. Ted Christopher was behind the wheel, hoping to become the third driver in a row to wheel the #52 to the 10K prize. Also on hand was the DAV Fall Classic Modified winner, 7 time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Mike Stefanik. Reigning Modified Racing Series Champion Jon McKennedy was looking to add this event to his mantle, as were Ryan Preece, Rowan Pennink, and Ronnie Silk, who were representing the NASCAR contingent. Thompson, CT — Ben Rowe of Turner, ME, made a late race surge to take down the victory in the Pro All Star Series annual visit to the 5/8-mile of Thompson International Speedway. Woody Pitkat of Stafford Springs, CT, ended his winless streak at Thompson with a convincing Sunoco Modified win on Thursday night. Larry Gelinas of Buxton, ME, posted a three-peat in the Whelen All-American Series Super Late Models while Rick Gentes of Woonsocket, RI, was tops in the Late Models. R.J. Marcotte of Millville, MA, wired the field to score his second TIS Modified win of the season. Chris “Moose” Douton streaked to his second straight victory in Limited Sportsman action. Randy Churchill, Jr., of Oakdale, MA, returned to victory lane in the Mini Stocks.
In the early going it looked like it may be a Southern sweep as Preston Peltier and Jay Fogelman, both of NC, dominated much of the race. Pole sitter Peltier enjoyed a fairly comfortable lead in the early stages of the event. His nearest competition in the first half of the event was Thompson’s own Derek Ramstrom. The Thompson regular’s bid for a hometown victory ended when he spun from the second position after losing his breaks entering turn two.
Over the last quarter of the race, Peltier had his hands full with Fogelman, Rowe and Johnny Clark. The Southerners showed the way as Rowe and Clark took chase. With less than 15 laps to go, Rowe decided it was time to go; passing Fogelman for second on the backstretch on lap 62. Rowe immediately began to hunt down Peltier, who had stretched out his advantage slightly. Fogleman fell into the grasp of Clark.

Nine races to air Wednesdays beginning Aug. 4
Daytona Beach, FL — The inaugural appearance of NASCAR racing on VERSUS, the fastest growing sports cable network in the country, is set for Wednesday, Aug. 4, with the Riverhead 200 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event from Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway.
The Riverhead 200, which will be contested on Saturday, July 31, will be the first of nine telecasts to air on VERSUS between the NASCAR Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tours in 2010. These two Touring Series feature short track racing at its best and are the heart of NASCAR racing at the grassroots level.
Riverhead Raceway is a quarter-mile bullring that has been part of the Whelen Modified Tour schedule since the Tour’s inaugural season of 1985. The first Whelen Southern Modified Tour broadcast will be from historic Bowman Gray Stadium. Bowman Gray – located Winston-Salem, N.C. – is the longest continuously sanctioned NASCAR track in the nation.

The American Canadian Tour (ACT) and the New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) have announced that a two-day test and tune session has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 17 and Wednesday, August 18, 2010 in preparation for the second ACT Invitational to be held as part of the classic triple header at NHMS on Saturday, September 18, 2010.
The practice sessions, which give invited teams nearly eight hours of practice each day at the famous ‘Magic Mile’, were a racing highlight for many teams last season in preparation for the inaugural running of the ACT Invitational in 2009. Because of the time constraints with the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Whelen Modified Tour, and NASCAR Truck Series participating at NHMS over the weekend of September 18th, this becomes the only time for the ACT teams to get quality seat time at the region’s only super speedway.
“We expect a totally different practice session this season having now experienced one Invitational”, said Tom Curley, President of ACT. “There was a lot of anxiety going into NHMS last season, but this year teams know what to prepare for and what to expect. Certainly for the many new teams we are inviting for the practice sessions, this will be a race experience many have dreamed about, but the goal is to get teams comfortable for the September event, which was a highlight of the ACT race season and for short track fans throughout the region in 2009.”

Waterford, CT — With the season recently moving past its halfway mark, the point battles in Waterford Speedbowl’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions show no signs of letting up. Overall, nearly 30 different competitors have taken the checkered flag so far this season among the track’s five NASCAR divisions translating into yet another competitive season at the shoreline oval sure to send championship battles down to the wire.
The SK Modifieds® once again are emerging as a two-man race between NASCAR’s national point leader Keith Rocco of Wallingford and defending division champion Ron Yuhas Jr., from Groton Rocco has used seven victories to move 22 marks ahead of Yuhas in the Speedbowl standings, but Yuhas has been in this position as recently as last year. He used consistency to overtake Rocco in the second half of the season a year ago and once again has been a model of consistency, posting all top-five finishes except one – a sixth place finish back on April 3. Waterford’s Rob Janovic Jr., himself a past champion in the Speedbowl’s premier division, is within distance of the two 87 points back should the battle for the top intensify. In total, seven SK Modified® drivers have tasted victory in 2010 making the championship drive a tough one every week for each of the top competitors.
The tightest championship battle resides in the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model division where no less than the top eight drivers are within a victory’s worth of points of one another. The 2006 division champion, Tim Jordan of Plainfield, sits atop the standings. Three-time defending champion of the division Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton is currently 40 points back in fourth. Third-year competitor and second-generation racer Jeff Smith of Old Lyme is second behind Jordan by a scant 13 points, with Seymour’s Vin Esposito third in the standings. Each of the four has found Victory Lane so far this season. A missed step by any could prove costly in the long run.

Windham, Maine’s Brad Babb currently sits atop the ACT Late Model Tour Rookie Standings and will look to stretch his lead with a solid finish this Saturday, July 24 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, the track where he cut his racing teeth. The seventeen year old holds a slim five point lead over fellow Maine youngster Austin Theriault of Fort Kent.
Babb has had a solid first half to his rookie season by qualifying for five of the first six races on the ACT Tour which is no small feat considering the Tour has been averaging well over 40 cars for each event. He has finished on the lead lap in four of these events with his only DNF (Did Not Finish) occurring at White Mountain Motorsports Park due to mechanical problems.
Babb has picked up a couple top 15 place finishes to help his Sallie Bolduc team lead the Rookie chase at the halfway mark. It has been his first time visiting most of the tracks. In his first career ACT Late Model Tour start in last season’s Oxford Plains Speedway finale in October he earned a sixth place finish.

Hampstead, NH — “If you are in the Northeast, the Oxford 250 is the place with all of the history,” said Andy Seuss of the short track racing classic that has been held every year since 1974 in Western Maine.
And while Seuss did not race in the 250 this season, the young New Hampshire driver was able to put his name in the history books on 250 weekend by winning its undercard race – Saturday night’s Modified Racing Series event at OPS. Although Seuss has gotten used to winning on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and in MRS competition, this wasn’t your typical victory.
“I really enjoy winning anywhere that there is a lot of history involved,” said Seuss. “I was real happy to win at South Boston and Myrtle Beach. The 250 weekend is so big. It meant a lot to me a few years ago to even just get the chance to run here. So to be able to win here is very special.”

Thompson, CT — The Pro All Star Super Late Models return to the Thompson Int’l Speedway this Thursday night. ACT Competitors Take Six of Top Ten Spots
Rowley, MA’s Eddie MacDonald earned his second straight TD Bank 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway on Sunday, July 18. MacDonald inherited the lead from Center Harbor, NH’s Brad Leighton who had a flat tire on lap 203. MacDonald was uncontested for the remaining 47 laps to earn the $29,800 pay day, which included lap money.
Leighton climbed his way from his 5th starting position to take the lead from pole sitter Brian Hoar on lap 13. He would then proceed to lap all but the top five cars on the racetrack before a lap 140 caution (the second of the race). The majority of the field used the lap 140 caution to make pit stops for fresh tires. Hoar used a unique strategy and just took one tire on the pit stop and beat Leighton back onto the racetrack.
With fresh tires Leighton again jumped out to the lead and was for the most part uncontested until a flat tire on lap 203 sent him spinning off the top of turns 1 and 2, bringing out the fifth and final caution of the 250. Leighton was able to remain on the lead lap and returned to the track after changing his tire as the sixth and final car on the lead lap.

A 100-lap Modified feature and the NEMA Challenge of Champions are on the busy Seekonk docket as well.

Naples, ME — Beech Ridge Pro Series racer Bill Rogers took advantage of a green-white-checker finish to beat Trevor Sanborn in Saturday night’s PASS 150 at Scarborough Maine’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway . Cassius Clark, Scott Mulkern and Johnny Clark chased Rogers and Sanborn to the checkers.
Rogers didn’t luck into the win by any means. The Old Orchard Beach racer was fast throughout the night. He took the lead from Scott Chubbuck on lap five and held the spot until Trevor Sanborn took over on lap thirty nine. At the half-way mark it was Sanborn, Rogers, Chubbuck, Scott Mulkern and Cassius Clark leading the way.
Rodgers took back the top spot on a lap 83 restart and stayed there until Sanborn returned the favor when the field went back to green after a lap 118 caution. It looked like Sanborn was in a position to finally claim a PASS North feature win; Rogers was right on his bumper though and Mulkern, Chubbuck and a resurgent Mike Rowe were all battling for position. Rowe’s night ended early with a disqualification after Chubbuck went around off of Rowe’s front bumper to bring out another caution at lap 132.

Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl returned to action Saturday night with a briskly paced NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing program. Tyler Chadwick of Ledyard checkered his first SK Modified ® feature of the year, scoring a popular win in the 35-lap main event. Ed Puleo of Branford was back in Victory Lane for the Street Stocks, his fourth win of the season and second straight. Lisbon’s Ken Cassidy Jr. returned to the winner’s circle in the Norwich Bulletin Mini Stocks, and Keith Rocco of Wallingford scored his first ever A.B. CDL Driver Training Center Truck division win in impressive fashion. Groton’s Glen Thomas Jr. dominated the X-Car ‘Dash for Cash’ race.
The 35-lap SK Modified® race saw Glen Pressell III lead lap one from his pole starting position, but the battle for the top spot was underway from the drop of the green flag.Todd Ceravolo and Kyle James raced behind Pressell, with Ceravolo trying to make the outside lane work to his advantage when the first caution came out on lap two when several cars came together with Joe Perry, Jeff Pearl, and Doug Coby receiving the brunt of the damage. Point leader Keith Rocco also received damage and joined them on pit road for repairs. All but Pearl were able to resume.
Pressell was able to retain his lead on the restart, but James, Ceravolo, and Chadwick were all looking for racing room behind keeping the pressure on Pressell out front. After eight laps the story remained the same when the second yellow flag came out after Diego Monahan spun from the fifth position into the infield off turn four.

Oxford, ME — Andy Seuss, Hampstead, NH., took the lead on lap 85 and went on to win the Modified Racing Series, sponsored by Bob Valenti AutoMall.Com, feature race, Saturday night, July 17, at the Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine. An emotional Seuss dedicated his win to his friend, crewman, and car builder Jay Hull, who passed away last week.
The “Mainely Action Sports Night 100” was the first win of the year for Seuss, his fifth career win with the series, he becomes the fourth different driver to win the Oxford race and the eighth different winner in nine series races in 2010.
Seuss shared the top spot with four other drivers. Pole-sitter Jack Bateman, Canaan, NH., led the first six laps until Jacob Dore, Sanford, ME., took over the lead to the delight of the home state crowd leading through lap 13. Then fellow Maine driver David Pinkham, Buxton, showed the way from lap 14 through 42. Bateman again took command and showed he was a force to be reckoned with leading the event from lap 43 to lap 73. The long time racer had a sizeable lead when the first caution flag was displayed on lap 73.

Seekonk, MA — Ken Spencer ended his two-season drought of Pro Stock wins in a convincing fashion after a second-lap spectacular crash halted the race for a major cleanup. The Taunton native hadn’t visited Victory Lane since a win in the 2008 season. Spencer, Rob Murphy from Rochester, MA and Westporter Rick Martin dueled for the lead throughout the feature. The trio finished the race in that order, just ahead of Ryan Vanasse and defending champ, Fred Astle. Astle’s fifth place finish juggles the leadership in points in the division at this mid-season race: Dave Darling, who nabbed the seventh spot on the night had been nursing a 1-point lead over Astle, and the 4-point differential edges Astle 3 points ahead of Darling.
At the outset, Murphy leapt off the high side of the front row, ahead of polesitter Phil Meany of Gardner, MA, getting the track to himself entering the first turn on lap 2. Meany got wide in turn one as Westport’s Dave Hutchins went to his outside. Opportunistic Spencer dived in underneath, making it 3-wide in turn 2. Coming out, the dynamics saw Meany get up into Hutchins, who was forced to the backstretch wall. The outside tires mounted the barrier amid a fury of sparks and rode the middle of the wall, tilting the car at a 45-degree angle. The pack began to scramble, but Acushnet’s Mike Brightman took a full force hit as Hutchins came down off the wall. Brightman had to be taken off on the hook and spent a great deal of time in the pits with suspension repairs. Also hauled from the track were the cars of Billy Manchester and Jeramee Lillie.
Murphy forged to the lead at the drop of the green and Spencer followed him into second. With Meany on the outside, Martin and Scully began a battle for position. Martin edged the Saunderstown, RI driver for the position. By lap 7, Murphy and Spencer were brawling over the lead with Martin patiently following for a shot at the spoils. Astle, Darling, Scully, Meany and Jake Vanada paraded behind them. Spencer had edged ahead of Murphy by the lap’s completion and wily Martin leapt at the opportunity to run to Murphy’s outside, where they battled through laps 8 and 9. Astle and Darling followed.
