Kibbe Back in Swing with #25 NEMA Car

Brockton, MA — Opening days are special for Carl Kibbe. The greatest day in his racing career, in fact, remains the 1985 Northeastern Midget Association opener at Star Speedway. It was the first win for the four-time NEMA owner champion. “I’ll never, never forget it,” says Kibbe who returned to NEMA last season as the trackside crew chief of the Keith Botelho-driven No. 25.

Waterford Speedbowl’s April 1-2 will mark the beginning of NEMA’s 59th season. Kibbe, part of the NEMA scene since the mid 1970s, would like to get another lasting memory. The Russ Stoehr-owned, Gaerte-powered No. 25, a winner last fall at Seekonk, will be ready to go reports Kibbe. It is the first of 14 scheduled NEMA races with more expected.

“It took nine years before that first win,” recalls Kibbe who, along with brother Don, decided “to go Midget racing” right in the middle of building a Modified in 1976. “We had actually won a championship (1980) before we got that first win.” It almost didn’t happen.

Buckwalter Claims Wild TQ-Midget Prelim; Carpenter Aces 600cc Micro Sprint Main

Atlantic City, NJ — Crazy.

That’s how Tim Buckwalter, 22, of Douglassville, Pa., described Friday night’s TQ-Midget 30-lap preliminary feature event at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Buckwalter claimed his first-ever indoor event in front of a large crowd that sat in absolute awe over the transgressions of a race that had many leaving the gates with absolute anticipation for Saturday night’s 40-lap Gambler’s Classic finale.

When the race was all said and done, only four cars finished the distance after a lap 25 crash took out or left 15 cars to the pit area. And many of those sent to the pit area were the heavy hitters like then-race leader Chris DeRitis, Lou Cicconi Jr, Joey Payne, Mike Lichty and Ted Christopher, who survived the turn two crash but he was later black flagged as his left-front wheel was busted.

Earl Pelletier Looks to Race his Way Back into CARQUEST Victory Lane in 2011 at Stafford Motor Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — With the 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season looming on the horizon, drivers are busy preparing their cars for competition while looking forward to the excitement of a new season. Such is the case for Stafford SK Light Modified driver Earl Pelletier and the #27 Earl Pelletier Concrete Services team. Pelletier has partnered with Steve Greer to share notes and most importantly, to receive some extra support in his pursuit of CARQUEST Victory Lane.

“I did some concrete work at Steve’s house and we got to talking about racing and we decided to be teammates for this season,” said Pelletier. “We’re going to have better resources this season, which will definitely be a big help,” said Pelletier. “We’re trying some different things on the car that we couldn’t afford to try in the past. We just got the car back from the chassis shop and R.A.D. Automachine has refreshed the engine, so we’re looking forward to the new season.”

After scoring three wins in 2008 and 2009, Pelletier went winless during the 2010 season. Pelletier was able to record 8 top-5 and 14 top-10 finishes with a best result of third, but several key factors kept him out of victory lane. Pelletier is looking to turn his fortunes around and get himself back into victory lane this year.

CARQUEST Champions for Charities Driver Spotlight: Ted Christopher

Stafford Springs, CT — As the excitement builds for the June 28th CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday Champions for Charities event, Stafford Speedway has been busy coordinating charities and the drivers that will represent them. The field for the CARQUEST Champions for Charities race is impressive, as it represents 42 championships among 12 drivers and 5 different open wheel divisions.

Ted Christopher, Stafford’s all-time winningest driver with 110 feature victories, will continue a relationship that he forged during the 2010 season and will be racing to raise funds for the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative. Last season, Christopher raised $100 for each feature victory and $1 for every lap he completed at Stafford for the CT Breast Health Initiative. With a matching contribution from Stafford Motor Speedway, Christopher was able to raise $4,000, which he presented during the CARQUEST Belts & Hose Pit Party during the CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend festivities. In addition to his CARQUEST Champions For Charities duties, Christopher has plans to once again raise money through his laps completed and feature victories at Stafford during the 2011 season.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Christopher. “We’re going to do the same deal that we did last year with the wins and laps. Everyone was real appreciative of what we were able to do last year and hopefully this year I can win more races than I did last year and raise more money. A friend of my wife’s had breast cancer and she was only 24. Breast cancer is a disease that unfortunately affects a lot of families and we’re trying to help raise money to defeat breast cancer. The great thing about the CT Breast Health Initiative is that all the money we raise is distributed right here in Connecticut.”

Field is Set for ACT New Smyrna Goodyear Speedweeks Cup

Goodyear Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna

The American Canadian Tour (ACT) has announced the twenty eight teams that will comprise the starting field for the highly anticipated inaugural Goodyear Speedweeks Cup event to be held at the New Smyrna Speedway (NSS) in Florida during next month’s Daytona Speedweeks. ACT will present two 100-lap features on Sunday night, February 13, 2011 and Monday night, February 14, 2011 during the New Smyrna World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. The posted purse will be $36,655.00

Qualifying for the Sunday event will use the northern style heat racing to establish the lineup. Fans from all over the country will see the unique +/- system incorporated into the ACT qualifying program four years ago. The Monday 100 lap feature will see an inversion from the results of the Sunday feature event.

“Since this will be our first trip to New Smyrna, we wanted to make sure we offer the many fans from around the country the most exciting and competitive racing we can,” said Tom Curley, President of the American Canadian Tour. “I think what makes our racing so popular in the Northeast is that we have a kind of a ‘no holds barred but respectful approach to racing’ — at NSS, teams will have to race their way in through heats, and then Monday may the best man win racing from the rear,” Curley continued.

Waterford Speedbowl Crowns 2010 Track Champions

Keith Rocco celebrated as 60th Modified Track Champion; Tim Jordan, Al Stone III, Ken Cassidy Jr. and Allen Coates recognized as NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champions; Anthony Flannery in Legends Cars

Waterford, CT — Over 500 guests gathered at Groton Inn & Suites on Saturday evening to celebrate Waterford Speedbowl’s 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and Saturday Legends Car series track champions. Keith Rocco capped a storybook 2010 season by collecting his 2010 SK Modified® championship accolades, the track’s top honor. Tim Jordan, Al Stone III, Ken Cassidy Jr. and Allen Coates were each honored as track champion of their respective NASCAR Whelen All-American Series division, with Anthony Flannery crowned in the Legends Cars.

In total, 80 teams and drivers were recognized for their efforts during the 2010 Speedbowl season. Special awards for the Top Rookie Driver, Sportsman of the Year, Most Improved Driver and Pit Crew of the Year in each of the six divisions were also given out.

Rocco, who resides in Meriden (CT), set the bar for the SK Modified® title high from the start. He won a special season opening event commemorating the 60th season of racing at the track, then claimed checkered flags in four of the next five Saturday night races. That bolted Rocco out to a point lead he would never relinquish. Rocco would not be denied his first SK Modified® track championship at the Speedbowl, capturing a total of 10 victories throughout the year – a single season record for wins in the division at the track. Mike and Mark Pane were recognized as the SK Modified® championship car owners, their first. Rocco was also the 2004 Street Stock division champion at the Speedbowl.
