Formula Hybrid Finishes Up at NHMS

Texas A+M made a strong showing at the Formula Hybrid competition this past week

Loudon, NH — Thirty teams from around the world wrapped up the fifth annual Formula Hybrid competition at New Hampshire Motor Speedway yesterday, with Texas A&M University dominating the three-day event.

Led by team advisor Dr. Make McDermott, Texas A&M were victorious in two of the four events including the acceleration and autocross contests.

Brigham Young University took home second place, winning the presentation and endurance segments of the competition.

Third place went to Sweden’s Lund University. Sweden won the design portion of the competition.

The top-six finishers included: Texas A&M University, Brigham Young University, Lund University, University of California-Davis, Dartmouth College and Canada’s McGill University.

Founded by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, the Formula Hybrid Competition is a design and engineering challenge for undergraduate and graduate university students. Participants must tackle the difficult task of designing, building, and competing in an open-wheel, single-seat, plug-in hybrid racecar.

Students work throughout the year on ways to make a difference in everyone’s life by opening doors to alternative energy and reducing fuel consumption without giving up performance and reliability.

The teams will now head to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indy 500 Emerging Tech Day on Saturday. They will demonstrate, through a special autocross event, the power and innovation of their hybrid and electric vehicles.
