Second annual Shane Hammond Memorial Race to Take Place at Waterford Speedbowl July 30

Waterford, CT — The second annual Shane Hammond Memorial Race is set to take place next weekend (Saturday, July 30) at the Waterford Speedbowl. Following an incredibly successful inaugural event last season, the race is organized by NEMA and The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation.

Shane Hammond was a young, talented driver who started his career at the Hi-Groove Speedway in Winchester, NH. There, Shane learned how to wheel a go kart on the dirt. He mastered the track and earned the name “Smoothy.” From there, he went on to run the NHKA series and ran various classes of karts with the support of his grand father, Jack Glockner, a former stock car driver from the Norwood Arena era.

Shane had a short reprieve from racing at age 15 when diagnosed with a brain and spine tumor. Surgery didn’t keep him down nor did that pain that nagged him everyday. He had a determination that could only be described as surreal and amazing. He lived for racing and anyone who knew him believed and supported his dream.

The unselfish character of Shane helped other racers too. He had his brother, Anthony Marvuglio, racing ¼ midgets by age 6. After that, they raced together in karts for years and were looking forward to racing together in NEMA. In fact, they were building another NEMA car so they could compete together – but it was not to be, as Shane’s time on earth came to a tragic end on April 6th, 2008 while competing in a midget at the Thompson International Speedway’s Icebreaker event.

Shane’s brother, Anthony will be competing this year with the NEMA lite series in car #21 (representing the day Shane was born). No matter what the finish is it will be a glorious day & Shane will be with him always.

Last years inaugural event at Waterford was hit with a rain delay & we made the best of it. This year Deb has prayed for the perfect race day to celebrate & honor Shane.

The event will have 37 laps in honor of his car number. With 10 lap heats and 27 lap features for NEMA and NEMA lites.

THE SHMR and SHBF want to ask everyone to join in on the celebration and join us at this event. There will be a hospitality tent set up for drivers, crew & sponsors along with raffles, cash n carry items and of course those famous Believe t-shirts. Shane’s mother, Deb, wants to thank all the corporate and individual sponsors who help make this day possible.
