Waterford Speedbowl WCTY Back to School Bash 9/4 Results

Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl wrapped up a busy week of programming with Sunday evening’s annual WCTY Back to School Bash. The cherry on the top of the Labor Day weekend at the shoreline oval had thrills and spills around every corner, as the crowd was entertained by motorcycle stunt man Luke “Duke” Emmons plus Ski Car Race, Figure 8 racing, Demo Derby and everyone’s favorite, the mayhem of school bus mayhem. The night was capped off by an aerial fireworks display.

The Ski Car race was a 15-lap spin-fest among several drivers. When all was said and done, J.P. Pereia of Westerly, RI was the master. He lapped the field on his way to the victory, but not before several displays of crazy racing kept the crowd entertained.

The Figure 8 race was set by two qualifying rounds plus a fan vote to determine the final car entered in the wild 25-lap feature. The cars were contained to the Speedbowl’s frontstretch, making 50 crosses right at the start-finish line. When all was said and done, Mark Bradley of Groton took the lead in the early going then held off Bill Hine, Brad Voglesong and others.

A full size enduro delivered some devastating blows to some of Detroit’s finest fabrication. A wide array of vehicles were selected by the daredevils as their battering ram of choice from mini-van to station wagon to decades-old land yachts. In the end Howard Lohmann of Meriden took what once resembled the family car and pummeled the field to take the crown and $500.00 payday.

Jeff Martin won an exhibition race by a field of school buses before being challenged to a head-to-head duel to the end by second-place finisher Robert Ross. To the delight of the crowd, the two staged a demo between their two buses. Before long, Martin had bashed Ross into submission.

The Speedbowl has one final thrill show remaining on the 2011 calendar, the annual Smacktoberfest which is scheduled for Saturday, October 22. The final demolition derbies of the season for both 4 and 8-cylinders is just part of the action. The always unpredictable Speedbowl Trailer Race will make its return, sure to litter the Speedbowl with more trash and junk than can be imagined. Enduro racing plus the champions will be crowned in the final Wacky Races of the year for both X-Cars and Super X-Cars.
