Three Straight for Medeiros

Epping, NH – Carl Medeiros Jr. became the first Northeastern Midget Association Lites Division competitor to capture three straight wins Saturday night with a convincing 25-lap triumph at Star Speedway.

Medeiros (Medeiros 50), coming off two victories at Lee Speedway on July 13, passed Bethany Stoehr down the back stretch five laps in. It was a caution-free romp from there, Medeiros, who will turn 16 on July 24, finishing far ahead of what turned into a Bethany Stoehr (MCI/Stoehr 26b), Dylan Duhaime (Duhaime 57) battle for second.

Youth was served as the 14-year old Duhaime fell a half-car length short of taking second from 17-year old Stoehr at the checkered. They are, however, “old foes” in the go kart wars. “We pretty much know what each other is going to do,” said Medeiros after winning the second Lites point race of the season.

Cabral Celebrates NEMA’s Return to Star

Epping, NH – Randy Cabral answered his own question Saturday night, celebrating the Northeastern Midget Association’s return to Star Speedway. The defending champion scored an impressive 30-lap victory in NEMA return after an absence of five years.

“I kept asking [car owner Tim Bertrand] ‘do I have it anymore?’” said Cabral who ended a nine-race victory draught going back to August of last year. Taking the lead on lap 10, he left no doubt with a convincing victory over ageless Jeff Horn (Horn A1).

A gutsy move on the second of five restarts set up the winning pass. Sitting fourth, Cabral went around Horn in turn one to claim second. “The car was working so good I just thought it would stick,” said Cabral who then followed Seth Carlson (Feigel 71), the only other leader, until grabbing control with an inside move out of four three laps later.

Cabral, running laps in the high 11s, had no problem with three restart challenges from Horn, pulling away each time. Over the final 10 circuits, the Stoehr brothers waged a battle for third, Russ (Dumo’s Desire 45) the eventual winner over Greg (Stoehr 26b). Anthony Nocella (Seymour 4) rallied for fifth.

Baldwin Evans Jarzombek 77 A Tribute To Track’s History

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – It may have been a trio of 20-somethings that dominated the day on the track, but the Baldwin Evans Jarzombek Memorial 77 was all about celebrating the history of NASCAR Modified racing at Riverhead Raceway.

Present-day standouts supplied the competitive highlights Saturday night as 22-year-old Long Islander Timmy Solomito earned the pole, 29-year-old and defending 77 winner Ron Silk looked strong in leading the field early, and 21-year-old Ryan Preece turned out to be the class of the show and took the checkered flag. But it was the vintage cars and fond memories of days gone by that carried the day.

The venerable quarter-mile in eastern Long Island has been a Modified racing hotbed throughout its existence, which dates back to 1949, the second year of NASCAR racing. The annual 77-lapper, contested Saturday night, pays homage to three legendary Modified drivers who had strong ties to the bullring.

Saturday 7/21 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Results

Waterford, CT — Beautiful weather graced Waterford Speedbowl Saturday evening for a six-division NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing program. Fans in attendance were treated to a cleanly competed event as the first four feature races were slowed by only one caution period among them. Scoring victories on the evening included Shawn Monahan of Waterford who won an absolute thriller in the night’s SK Modified® feature. Corey Hutchings of Salem won his third Street Stock feature on the year while Oakdale driver Wayne Burroughs picked up an exciting first-ever win in the Mini Stock division. Corey Barry of Plainfield won his second consecutive SK Light Modified race, Dana Dimatteo of Farmington won his second Saturday Series Legend Cars event of 2012 and Chris Garside of Waterford took a hometown win in the Saturday Series for the X-Car division.

Monahan led the field to the green flag to start the 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified® feature race. He bolted out to the early lead over Jeffrey Gallup, who was comfortable in second position ahead of Joe Perry, Ed Puleo and Joe Gada as the field singled out. Top guns Rob Janovic Jr., Keith Rocco and Tyler Chadwick were racing further back to crack the top-ten positions when Rich Brooks spun in turn two on lap-9 to bring out the first caution flag.

On the restart it was Monahan back ahead of Gallup with Puleo racing to third outside Perry, who was back in a battle with Gada for fourth. Kyle James and Keith Rocco battled side-by-side behind that pair for sixth position while Diego Monahan, Janovic and Chadwick were trying to make up ground through the field behind them. Fred Astle picks up Pro Stock win in Mid Season Championship; Dylan Estrella gains 1st LM Checkered; Rick Martin wins Truck main; Scott Serydynski nabs Street Stock win

Seekonk, MA — After taking a week off, a rejuvenated 6 time Pro Stock Champion in Fred Astle picked up his third win of the season. In a race that treated the fans to a throwback type of race, he held off Rick Martin and Dave Darling for the checkered.
Dick Houlihan jumped out to the early lead over Kyle Casper, and set the pace for the nine laps, before Astle used a restart to out power Houly to the corners. Once out front, Astle had to hold off the challenges of points leader Darling and Martin, who was competing in his second race of the season in the Pro Stocks.

For the final 20 laps, Martin used the outside lane to move past Darling and make a run at Astle, but the defending champ was up to the challenge, as he held Martin off at the stripe. Darling finished third, as the three crossed the finish line under a proverbial blanket. Houlihan was fourth across the line with Mike Brightman fifth. After post-race tech, Martin failed, moving Houlihan and Brightman to third and fourth, with Craig Weinstein rounding out the top five.

In the 30 lap Late Model feature, North Attleboro’s Dylan Estrella finally completed what it has taken him a year and a half to complete, a LM feature win. Ron Barboza of Warren, RI jumped out to the early lead, and set a comfortable pace until a caution came out on lap seven when Bruce Rego and Bill Bernard got together. Estrella powered past on the ensuing restart and never looked back. Barboza hung on for second for a few laps until Bobby Pelland III squeezed by for second with Jeramee Lillie in tow. With a late race caution for Gerry DeGasparre and Tyler Thompson, the field bunched up for one last shot, but the sophomore would not be denied on this night, as Estrella picked up his first career Late Model win. Pelland held on for second, and closed the gap in the championship chase, with Lillie, Barboza and Bernard rounding out the top five.
