Budweiser Modified Nationals hightlights Thunder on the Sound at Speedbowl

16th annual SK-150 part of nine division program Saturday

Waterford, CT — While Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of summer, Waterford Speedbowl puts its stamp on the holiday on Saturday with one of its biggest events of the season. A nine-division race program takes center stage at the shoreline oval as it hosts its annual Thunder on the Sound event, presented by the Connecticut National Guard. The highlight of the racing card is the 16th annual Budweiser Modified Nationals, a 150-lap showdown for the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified® division. The Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA) returns for its prestigious Angelillo Memorial as part of the event.

The biggest race of the year for SK Modified® competitors puts them to the test for 150 laps with the winner adding their name to the record books. They’ll join an elite list in taking home a $5,000 winner’s purse. A large turnout of cars is expected for the race, which carries over a $20,000 total payout.

Championship contenders Tyler Chadwick and Rob Janovic Jr. seek their first triumph in the extra-distance race after making several starts each. Jeff Pearl, coming off a win last Saturday, seeks a second career victory in the race. Keith Rocco, still nursing a broken wrist, is also on the list of those seeking their first win in the event. Last season, top open-wheel racer Woody Pitkat invaded the Speedbowl in a rare appearance to take home the checkered flag and big payday. A host of Speedbowl regulars are also contenders along with an annual array of top ‘outsiders’.

Eight additional divisions join Saturday’s Budweiser Modified Nationals during Thunder on the Sound. The lightning quick NEMA Midgets and NEMA Lites are back for a special event, their Angelillo Memorial, a tribute to the legendary long-time owner and former club president. A full card of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing including the return of the SK Light Modifieds, plus INEX racing by the Legend Cars and Bandoleros completes the racing card. Pit gates open at a special time at 11:00am with practice commencing at 12:00pm noon. Qualifying for the event begins at 4:00pm, including heat races plus consolation races if needed for the Budweiser Modified Nationals. Opening ceremonies and the first of nine feature races begins at 6:00pm.
