Cates, Pitkat, Dowling, Bessette, & Walker Score Town Fair Tire Military Appreciation Night Feature Wins

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Speedway was back to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action with a nod to the United States Armed Forces with Town Fair Tire Military Appreciation Night. Taking down feature wins on the night were Danny Cates in the 40-lap SK Modified® feature, Woody Pitkat in the 30-lap Late Model feature, Chase Dowling in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Austin Bessette in the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, and Johnny Walker in the 15-lap DARE Stock feature.

Cates then moved by Aszklar on lap-4 to take over the race lead. ACT Returns to Riverside Speedway this Weekend

The American Canadian Tour will return to Groveton, NH’s Riverside Speedway this Sunday, June 2nd for the Bond Auto ACT 150. It will be the first ACT race at the quarter-mile track since 2004.

With point leader Brian Hoar’s plans to run a limited schedule in 2013, the door has swung wide open this weekend at Riverside for ACT’s top talents. Sophomore driver Jimmy Hebert has come out of the gate on fire, sitting second in the overall points coming into his first Late Model appearance at Riverside Speedway. Reigning Series Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., who won the first Clash of the Titans 150 held at the speedway in 2009, will attempt to erase the 15-point deficit between himself and the upstart Hebert.

Tiverton, RI’s Ray Parent will look to continue his early-season momentum at Riverside Speedway in his first appearance at the track in an ACT event. Veteran Brent Dragon will be trying to extend his impressive resume at Riverside with ACT. He currently leads all ACT drivers in most top tens (7) and most top fives (5) in ACT events at the Groveton, NH track.

Preece Masters Restarts for SK Win at Thompson

Thompson, CT — Ryan Preece, John Studley, Rick Gentes, Scott Sundeen and Eric Bourgeois earned NASCAR Whelen All-American Series victories in the kick-off of the Thursday Night Thompson Thunder (TNTT) program at Thompson Speedway.

Preece used a restart to take the lead on lap eight of the 30-lap Sunoco Modified feature Thursday night and held off a determined Todd Ceravolo through a series of restarts for the victory.

Jay Sundeen took the early lead in the feature event, but Paul Newcomb quickly took it away coming out of turn two on the first circuit. Ceravolo challenged for second as Sundeen held him off before spinning in turn two and bringing out the first caution of the night. On the restart, Newcomb chose the high line to hold off Ceravolo and drive back out to the front. Ryan Preece and Woody Pitkat got into the mix before the lap was over. The four cars ran nose-to-tail until lap six when the caution flew for a spin on the backstretch.

O’Donnell Leads King of the Road Title Chase

Fleury, Switser Take Leads in Tigers and Streets

BARRE, VT — In just his third start in a Late Model at Thunder Road, Rookie of the Year contender Derrick O’Donnell opened up the King of the Road points chase with a dominating victory in Sunday’s 51st Annual Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic.

O’Donnell will carry a 7-point advantage over reigning track champion Nick Sweet, who is just two points ahead of third-place Trampas Demers in the point standings. The season is young yet for the Late Models, who had their first point-counting event in the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic, but the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen and Allen Lumber Street Stocks experienced big point shakeups after event two of their 2013 season.

Two-time Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman Champion Shawn Fleury assumed the point lead as one of only three drivers in the division who has started the year with two straight top-ten finishes. Fleury holds an 8-point advantage over Milton, VT’s Eric Badore, who sits just three points ahead of 2012 Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman Rookie of the Year Jason Woodard. “Double O” Joe Steffen and Josh Demers round out the top five, just one and two points away from Woodard respectively. Only twenty points separate the top ten drivers in the division.

PASS Pro Late Models to Take Center Stage at Dillon this Weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC — For the first time this season, the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Pro Late Models will be the featured division as they headline the First Citizens 200 Saturday night at Dillon Motor Speedway. The 4/10 mile, egg-shaped layout of the Dillon Motor Speedway is a tough challenge to even the most experienced racer and the competition is certainly aware of that factor heading into this weekend. In less than two years though, the PASS Pro Late Models has proven to be one of the country’s top divisions for racers looking to make the step up into a touring division. Already this year, drivers like Tate Fogleman, Cole Timm, Jody Measamer, and Karl Weber have shown glimpses of their potential in the PASS South Super Late Model division thanks in large part to their time racing with the PASS Pro Late Models.

Harrison Burton and Trevor Noles have both found success this season in the PASS Pro Late Models, finishing first and second respectively at Dillon back in March. Since then, Noles has gone on to record three PASS Pro Late Model wins and has become one of the hottest commodities in short track racing. Additionally, Noles made his PASS South Super Late Model debut in the Coulter Motorsports #2 at Southern National Raceway Park where he finished ninth and followed that up by leading laps at South Boston Speedway and finishing 12th. Noles says he is looking forward to showcasing his talent further this weekend at Dillon as the PASS Pro Late Models step into the spotlight.

“I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be different for sure,” said Noles. “It was definitely surprising back in March how well [Harrison] Burton ran. I figured they’d be good, but hopefully we can go back there and show them up. It should be a good battle for sure.”

O’Donnel Holds Off Sweet for Memorial Day Classic Win

Mueller, Pierson, and Smith Claim Feature Wins

BARRE, VT — North Haverhill’s Derrick O’Donnell held off a late charge from King of the Road Nick Sweet to pick up the victory in his first-ever Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic at Barre’s Thunder Road on Monday, May 27.

O’Donnell started third in the 30-car field, needing only six laps to claim the lead from South Burlington, VT’s Trampas Demers. 2012 Thunder Road Track Champion Nick Sweet quickly worked his way from his 12th starting position to fifth by lap 41, and by lap 58, after the third of six caution periods, had cracked the top three. Sweet pulled into second with 12 laps to go looking to win his second Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic in a row, but the former Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman Champion O’Donnell held him off to become the 51st name in the Memorial Day Classic Granite Stone at Thunder Road.

“Man, we needed redemption after the Merchants Bank Race. I’ve been after myself for not performing how I would have liked, and this completely makes up for it,” said O’Donnell in victory lane. “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Myers Holds off Brown at Bowman Gray

Winston-Salem, NC — After a disappointing start to his 2013 season in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove is back where he wants to be – in Victory Lane.

“Last week, we consider the 200-lapper the race we should win. And to have a fifth place car just didn’t settle well with me. So we did everything we could to get it as good as possible this week,” said Myers. Knowing that qualifying would be paramount in the twin 25-lap races on Saturday, Myers concentrated on his time trial performance.

His hard work paid off when he grabbed the pole. Defending Champ Tim Brown of Rural Hall was the second fastest qualifier, starting on the outside front row. And behind Myers on the inside second row was younger brother Jason Myers.

Rain Forces David’s House 106 Postponement until June 1

WINCHESTER, NH — With the steady rainfall and a poor forecast, the Granite State Pro Stock Series was forced to postpone the second annual David’s House 106 until the following Saturday, June 1. The schedule should remain the same as what was originally posted for the 5/25 date, with the David’s House 106 headlining the evenings events. Joining the festivities will be the Sportsman Modifieds, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Young Guns, and the Senior Tour Auto Racers.

Waterford, CT — For the second time in three weeks, Waterford Speedbowl cancelled its NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing program scheduled for Saturday evening. Persistent wet weather and chilly temperatures forecasted through afternoon and evening forced the decision.

Grissom Holds Off Fogleman for PASS South Win at Caraway

ASHEBORO, NC — Kyle Grissom took the lead from Brandon Ward on a lap 84 restart and held off points leader Jay Fogleman to win the “Krazy” Kevin Powell 150 for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Super Late Models Friday night at Caraway Speedway. Grissom’s seventh career PASS South Super Late Model win moves him to within four points of Fogleman headed to the next series event in two weeks at South Boston Speedway.

“I wasn’t crazy about taking the lead that early, but I was getting good restarts and took advantage of it,” said Grissom, after becoming the first two-time winner this season in PASS South. “Once the 2 car (Fogleman) got up there, that was pretty tough, that was nerve wracking having Jay Fogleman back there those last 60 laps.”

Grissom began the night by breaking his own track record in qualifying with a lap of 100.485 miles per hour around the .455 mile Caraway Speedway. Following the top 10 qualifier redraw, Grissom slid back to the seventh starting position while veterans Brandon Ward and Randy Gentry would move up to row one for the start.

Monadnock Wins to Norton, Laquire Jr., Rivet, Gauffin, Lofland, Lawrence & Kimball

Norton Wins Two in a Row in Sportsman Mods

Winchester, NH — On a night perfect for racing Adam Norton in the Custom Pallets sponsored Sportsman Modified took down his second feature win in a row by besting the field on the high banks of Monadnock.

Ken Thompson of Alstead, NH and Jeff Wright of Jaffrey, NH brought the field to green, with Thompson blasting into the lead. Eric Leclair of Easthampton, MA worked over Wright for three laps, finally slipping by into second place.

A lap seven yellow flag slowed the field briefly, allowing Leclair to restart outside of Thompson. When Leclair found the power he needed to get by Thompson on the outside, Eric became the new leader, but that only lasted for a lap. Norton, who started mid pack, wasted little time driving his way to the lead by lap eight. A lap eight yellow bunched the field again, with Norton leading, Leclair second, Thompson impressively holding on to third with Bill Kimball of Bennington, NH, Joe Kendall of Winchendon, MA and Tyler Jarvenpaa of Orange, MA fourth through sixth, respectively.

Stafford Speedway Drivers will be Racing for Xtra Dollars in 2013 Thanks to Xtra Mart Xtra D Bonus Program

Stafford Springs, CT — For the second consecutive season, Stafford Motor Speedway’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series drivers will be racing for extra bonus money thanks to Xtra Mart Convenience Stores. Last year was the inaugural season of the Xtra Mart Xtra D program, which gave each of Stafford’s five weekly divisions the opportunity to race in an extra distance feature and the top-5 finishers in those Xtra D features received a cash bonus. For 2013, Xtra Mart Convenience Stores will contribute a total of $3,750 that will be split up among the five races that will make up the Xtra Mart Xtra D Series.

The Xtra Mart Xtra D Series kicked off with the Late Model Xtra D 35-lap feature on Friday, May 10. That event paid an extra $1,000 to the top-5 finishers and the DARE Stocks took to the track for their Xtra D race last Friday, May 17 with a 20-lap feature event that split $250 among the top-5 finishers. The SK Modified® division will race for Xtra dollars as part of the 40th Annual Coors Light Xtra D 80-lap feature on Friday, July 19 with $1,500 split among the top-5 finishers; the Limited Late Model division will go for their Xtra Mart Xtra D bonus with a 25-lap feature on Friday, June 14; and the SK Light division will wrap up the Xtra Mart Xtra D Series with a 25-lap feature event on Friday, July 5. Both the SK Lights and Limited Late Models will split $500 among the top-5 finishers from each feature event.

“We’re happy to welcome back Xtra Mart to our contingency program for the 2013 season,” said SMS COO/GM Mark Arute. “This is a great program from Xtra Mart that will benefit competitors in each of our NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions rather than one or two divisions. We’ve had two exciting Xtra D races so far and we’re looking forward to three more exciting races.”

Adam Gray Rebounds from Subpar Spring Sizzler with Win and Podium Finish to Get Back into Championship Contention

Stafford Springs, CT — For Granby, MA native Adam Gray, the 2013 Late Model season has picked up right where he left off the 2012 season. In the final 6 races of 2012, Gray recorded two wins and two more top-5 finishes, but also had finishes of 17th and 18th. Gray’s 2013 season got off to a fast start at the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, but a flat tire relegated him to an 18th place finish. But Gray and the #97 Meadows Motor Car team have dug themselves out of the early season hole created by the flat tire with a win and a third place finish in the next two races to elevate themselves to 6th place in the points standings.

“We had a fast car at the Sizzler but we ended our day early with a flat right rear tire,” said Gray. “We got the flat and there was 3 laps to go and by the time we got into the pits there wasn’t any point to going back out. We were hoping for a nice, solid finish the first week for the points chase. The win definitely boosted the team morale, we’re not out of the picture. Right now, we’re looking for consistency and wins, and we’ll get halfway through the season and take things from there. I feel like we have a car capable of winning the championship this year, but it’s tougher at Stafford than at any other track. I think three-quarters of the field can win on any given night. If we can keep in the right direction, I feel confident we can be a championship contender this year.”

Gray’s feature victory came in the extra distance Xtra Mart Xtra D feature, which was 35 laps instead of the usual 30-lap distance that the Late Models run. Although Gray started the race from pole position, his victory was anything but easy as he had to hold off a hard charging Tom Fearn in the closing laps. Gray and Fearn dueled again for the win last week, with Fearn winning and Gray finishing third behind Fearn and Woody Pitkat. With three strong performances under his belt thusfar, Gray is confident that he has a winning car every week at Stafford.

Woody Pitkat Picks Up TSI Harley-Davidson Sponsorship for TSI Harley-Davidson 125 presented by G-Oil

Stafford Springs, CT — Hometown driver Woody Pitkat will welcome the return of TSI Harley-Davidson as a sponsor to his #79 Hillbilly Racing team when the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour comes to Stafford for the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 Presented by G-Oil. Pitkat has had a long association with TSI Harley-Davidson, dating back to his Late Model days at Stafford and Thompson, and he is looking forward to carrying the TSI Harley-Davidson banner once again.

“I had TSI on my Late Model at Thompson in 2005, so we’ve been together for a while,” said Pitkat. “It’s very nice and generous of Harry Levesque and TSI for continuing to help me out and I really appreciate his help whether it’s for one race or the whole year. Hopefully I can get my first Tour win with TSI Harley-Davidson on the car. We need to have a good run, we’ve had some bad luck between the clutch at Thompson and the motor breaking last time at Stafford. Maybe having TSI on the car will help our luck out and we can get things turned around in the right direction. I think with a fresh motor, we should have as good a car as we did at the Fall Final last year.”

Last year’s CARQUEST Fall Final was the closest Pitkat has come to capturing his first NWMT victory. Pitkat started the race from the fourth position, and he led the race from lap-17 to lap-144 before getting passed by Bobby Santos, III and finishing second. Pitkat says the key to recording his first win will be another good qualifying effort and keeping track of how his car is handling during the 125-lap race to determine their race strategy.

CARQUEST Champions for Charities: David Arute

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway has again lined up an impressive field of current and former open wheel champions for its CARQUEST Champions For Charities Event as part of CARQUEST Super Saturday on June 30th. During the coming weeks, SMS will offer a profile on each of its championship winning drivers and the charity they will be racing for. This week’s CARQUEST Champions For Charities spotlight falls on 2011 Wild Thing Kart Senior Outlaw Champion David Arute, who will be racing to help support The Lustgarten Foundation, which is an organization dedicated to the research of pancreatic cancer. For Arute, racing for The Lustgarten Foundation takes on a personal connection as his Uncle Bill passed away in 2010 from pancreatic cancer.

“My Uncle Bill was a fun loving guy that was always the life of our family parties,” said Arute. “It means a lot for me to be racing to raise money for Lustgarten. It was definitely a hard situation for our family to deal with and my hope is that by raising this money for The Lustgarten Foundation, we can help find a cure and other families won’t have to go through the same thing that our family went through.”

Part of Arute’s fundraising efforts for The Lustgarten Foundation was the 3rd Annual Bill Tamburro, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held this past Monday, May 20th at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, CT. The tournament raised over $11,000 and has helped put Arute at the top of the CARQUEST Champions For Charities driver roster. In addition to the golf tournament, Arute will also be selling DP Motorsports tee-shirts leading up to the June 28th CARQUEST Champions For Charities race.
