QUALIFYING: Preece Wins Charlotte Pole
Perfect 3-For-3 In Southern Tour This Season
CONCORD, N.C. – Ryan Preece has migrated south three times this season and has won the Coors Light Pole on each occasion.
The Berlin, Conn., driver was fastest in NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour qualifying for the UNOH Southern Slam 150 on Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Preece, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour points leader made his way around the quarter-mile track situated on the frontstretch of the 1.5-mile tri-oval in 14.778 seconds for an average speed of 60.901 mph.
Preece, a member of the prestigious NASCAR Next program, has a 26-point lead on defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby with one race to go. In addition to that and a full NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule, he has traveled south to compete in Southern Modified Tour events at Southern National Motorsports Park in Kenly, N.C., Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., and this Charlotte event. The 22-year-old won the Bowman Gray race in August. Preece has 12 career poles in the New England-based Whelen Modified Tour.
Veteran Tim Brown will start alongside Preece on the front row after posting a time of 14.920 seconds (60.322 mph). The second row will consist of Kyle Ebersole with a qualifying time of 14.933 seconds (60.269 mph) and Burt Myers, who recorded a time of 14.939 seconds (60.245 mph).
A.J. Winstead, Luke Fleming, David Calabrese, George Brunnhoelzl III, John Smith and Bryan Dauzat completed the top-10 qualifiers.
Brunnhoelzl, the defending race champion, will clinch his third straight Southern Modified Tour championship, and fourth overall, when he takes the green flag for the race. He brings a 32-point lead on Ebersole into the event.
The UNOH Southern Slam 150 is scheduled to get underway at approximately 8:30 p.m. following NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole qualifying.
