First NEMA Midget Appearance Since 1972
WISCASSET, ME — Saturday June 7th, 2014 Wiscasset Speedway will take “speed” to a whole new level as (North Eastern Midget Association) NEMA Midgets & NEMA Lites take to the high-banks of Maine’s fastest track. This will showcase some of racing’s quickest cars on Maine’s fastest track. It’ll be a special treat for our fans.”
The NEMA Midgets are compact winged racecars with a very high power to weight ratio. With up to 400 horsepower and weighing approximately 1,000 pounds, Midgets are among the fastest cars on oval tracks ½ mile and under. For years Midget racing has played a significant role in the development of some of the nation’s finest and most successful drivers. More info is available at www.nemaracing.com.
Wiscasset Speedway’s full 2014 schedule will be released at the Northeast Motorsports Expo January 10, 11, 12.
Stafford Springs, CT — After three successful seasons in Stafford’s Limited Late Model division, East Hartford native D.J. Burnham will trade full fenders for open wheel modifieds as he is set to join the SK Light division in 2014. Burnham came to Stafford’s Limited Late Model division in 2011 and in three seasons he has posted 6 career wins and he has finished in the top-5 of the points standings in each of his three seasons. Burnham is hopeful that he can continue his front running ways as he makes the switch.
“I hope to run towards the front of the pack, said Burnham. “I know at the start of the season we’re not going to set the world on fire, but I’m expecting to be competitive by the middle to end of the year. We’d like to win a race too, that would be nice for us. We’re planning on running the full year. I really have to thank my Mom and Dad for putting this together for me. I always thought we were going to move up to Late Model and it was about halfway through the season we started talking about a modified and next thing you know, there was a modified in the garage. It doesn’t really matter to me, as long as I’m on the track it’s fine with me. Anything that my dad and brother want to put together for me, I’ll drive it. I’m a little nervous but I’m more excited than anything. We like building cars during the winter, that’s what we have fun doing.”
While Burnham has enjoyed the taste of victory lane during his three seasons of Ltd. Late Model competition at Stafford, he enters the 2014 season with next to zero experience behind the wheel of a modified. But his very limited experience did at least offer him a first impression of what life behind the wheel of a modified will be like.
Stafford Springs, CT — After a sensational rookie year in Stafford’s SK Light division this past season, Roxbury native Chase Dowling will make the move into Stafford’s premier SK Modified® division for the 2014 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season. Dowling won his very first start in the SK Lights and went on to win 6 more features for a total of 7 wins in his first season behind the wheel of a modified. Although his SK Light rookie season was a smashing success, Dowling doesn’t expect to be able to replicate his rookie results in 2014.
“I think my goals for this year are the same as they were before last year,” said Dowling. “We’d like to win one race and win the Rookie of the Year title. Obviously moving up the competition is a lot harder so I’m not going to get my hopes up too high but hopefully at least we can be the top rookie and I’ll be happy. Anything on the podium in the SK’s will be something to be proud of. Everyone wants to go out and win races but being a rookie I’m not expecting to win right away.”
As Dowling prepares for his rookie foray into Stafford’s premier division, he is bringing with him every element that helped him to his 7-win season. Dowling will drive the same chassis, he will have the same crew members, and he will have each of his sponsors, S+S Asphalt paving, Dunleavy Truck And Trailer Repair, All About You Homecare, Carrigan Heating and Air Conditioning, Southwood Auto Parts, and Arbitell Convenience Stores moving up with him. The only differences between 2013 and 2014 will be the number on the side and roof of Dowling’s car, the engine under the hood, and the level of competition on the track.
Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway’s SK Modified® division has added Ronnie Williams to its 2014 SPAFCO Rookie Class. The Ellington native has spent the past two seasons in Stafford’s SK Light Modified division, where he has accumulated 4 wins and two 6th place finishes in the points standings. Williams joins fellow SK Light drivers Chase Dowling and Troy Talman as 2014 SK Modified® rookies in what should be a great duel for rookie of the year honors.
“I think we decided that we ran really well this year in the SK Lights and we were a contender every week,” said Williams. “We had a couple nights with crashes but for the most part we were getting podium finishes and we got a couple of wins, so that’s why we’re moving up. Of course I’m a little nervous, I’m going to be going up against the best drivers in the Northeast like Ted Christopher, Ryan Preece, Keith Rocco, and the list goes on and on. But at the same time, it’s going to be pretty cool because I’ve been watching some of these guys race since I was 2 years old so I feel like we’ll have a lot of fun this year.”
As Williams prepares for his transition from SK Light to SK Modified®, he and his AdviceOne and NAPA of Tolland team have bought the former #89 car driven by Woody Pitkat and Rowan Pennink the last three seasons at SMS. The #89 car won 5 races and finished second and third in the points standings with Pitkat driving, so Williams knows that he has a good car on his hands. Another factor that Williams will have in his favor as he sets out on his rookie season will be his crew chief, Stash Butova. Butova has won a championship with Frank Ruocco in the SK Modified® division and Williams feels that the combination of having a winning car and crew chief will help him to ease his learning curve.
SEEKONK, MA — Seekonk Speedway is excited to welcome back WPRO-AM and Providence Auto Body as sponsors for the 4th Annual Speedway Car Show and Go! mass Crusiers will be on hand for judging all the great categories of classic cars and Crusin Bruce palmer will be on hand to provide the entertainment! New addition to the day will be the first of three Automotive Swap meets starting at 9 am as well as Free to the public Open Practice inside on the 1/3 mile asphalt track. Spring is just around the corner!
TRENTON, NJ — A formerly little-known race car builder in upstate Ransomville, New York has become the most sought after constructor of Indoor Three quarter Midget cars based on past performance. Mark Lafler has built no less than ten new TQ Midgets for the 2014 Len Sammons Motorsports Productions Indoor season which consists of the NAPA KNOW HOW Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall Races scheduled for Friday and Saturday January 24 and 25 and the first annual Battle Of Trenton Indoor Races presented by PRC Industries/ Angela House Charity planned for February 7 and 8, 2014.
Fatheadz Eyewear will be returning as the series sponsor and will pay bonuses to the top three overall TQ Midget drivers from the two race series. Drivers will receive points based on their qualifying efforts and feature finishes from Friday and Saturday night at both events towards the overall series crown.
“It’s been a busy year,” understated Mark Lafler. “I’m a one man shop but I was able to turn out a car a month. I could have done a lot more if I was building cars full time.”
Okla. driver tabbed for run at K&N Pro East championship
Daytona Beach, Fla. — Already a driver on the move, Kenzie Ruston’s career is ready to pick up even more speed.
Fresh from a strong rookie campaign in the NASCAR K&N East Pro Series, the 22-year old Oklahoma native will set her sights on a big sophomore season effort after being signed by Ben Kennedy Racing to return to the series for the 2014 season.
Ruston twice earned the Sunoco Rookie of the Race honors on her way to sixth in the 2013 NASCAR K&N East Pro Series (NKNEPS) driver championship, and will look to put the lessons learned in her rookie year to good use as she joins Ben Kennedy Racing to drive the No. 96 Chevrolet for the Daytona Beach, Florida-based team.
2012 NASCAR Cup Champ Keselowski to Appear at Motorsports 2014
OAKS, PA — NASCAR Sprint Cup racer Brad Keselowski, the 2012 Cup titleholder, will be appearing at the huge Pioneer Pole Buildings Motorsports 2014 Racecar & Trade Show Fueled by Sunoco & Distributed by Insinger Performance.
