Hillsgrove Race Track

Thanks to racing historian R.A. Silvia for pointing this out to me this afternoon.

The Hillsgrove village in Warwick is best known for the T.F. Green Airport now. When the airport was in its infancy seven decades ago, a race track was still visible south of the airport.

The Hillsgrove track was mentioned to Silvia years ago as the site of motorcycle and auto racing in the early 1900s. Other than maps, aerial photos and a rare article, hopes seemed slim to verify the existence of racing.

Until now! A recent ebay auction featured a trophy from an Iowa collector. The 1906 motorcycle race trophy declared: “First Prize/Five Mile State Championship/Presented by A.W. Harris Oil Company/Motorcycle Race Held by/Providence Motorcycle Club/Hills Grove/Sept. 22 1906/Won by F.E. Domina/Time 7 Min and 30 2/5 Sec”.
