Todd Bertrand Pulls down NEMA Midget Win at Twin State

CLAREMONT, NH — On a night honoring special guests Whelen Engineering, Todd Bertrand, (#39), claimed his first win of the 2014 season in commanding fashion as he took the lead in the early stages of the caution free feature. Following in second was teammate Randy Cabral, (#47), with Bethany Stoehr home third.

Under a perfect sky, the Twin State facility played host for an evening of food, souvenirs and racing action for the employees of Whelen Engineering, located in nearby Charlestown, N.H. At intermission, the NEMA and NEMA Lites drivers passed out 350 NEMA fan appreciation tee shirts, followed by an on track meet and greet where fans were able to collect autographs, handshakes and photos.

As the racing action began, Bethany Stoehr, (#5b), pulled out to an early lead from her outside pole starting spot, followed by Bertrand and Ryan Bigelow, (#13).

P.J. Stergios Wins “Back to Back” at Twin State for NEMA Lites Midgets

CLAREMONT, NH — In his home state of N.H., P.J. Stergios, (#11), takes his second win in a row, and three on the year in the family owned Beast chassis. Starting from the tenth spot, it wasn’t until the late stages of the race when he was able to take the point. Andy Barrows, (#46x), finished runner-up with Scott Bigelow, (#32), third.

Under a clear sky, and on a slick track from the day’s heat, Richie Morrocco, (#25), took the lead at the green, followed by Anthony Payne, (#21) second, Barrows third, Kevin Hutchens, (#27) forth, and Ryan Krachun, (#29), fifth.

On lap four, Barrows, along with Bigelow team member, Paul, was able to power to the front where they would dominate until lap eight when a three wide fight for third through fifth occurred. As a result, Stergios was able to blast all the way into second and P. Bigelow slid back to forth, while Hutchens went into third.

Thunder Road Point Battles Heat Up

Barre, VT – As the heart of summer nears, the title hunts in all three stock car racing divisions at Thunder Road International Speedbowl are heating up. Just two events remain before the double-point Mid-Season Championships, beginning with the Northfield Savings Bank event this Thursday, July 3.

Two-time “King of the Road” Nick Sweet of Barre and defending “King of the Road” Derrick O’Donnell of North Haverhill, NH are door handle-to-door handle at the top of the Late Model standings. The pair is separated by just one point and surprisingly both drivers are still looking for their first wins of the season.

Right behind the former champions are John Donahue, Jason Corliss and Cody Blake who are all within striking distance of their first career titles. Two more former champions in Dave Pembroke and Phil Scott also sit less than twenty points out of the lead.

Whelen So. Modified News & Notes: Caraway

Southern Mods Return To Action On Independence Day

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will head to a familiar place to return to action Friday following the annual spring break period with the Daggett Shuler Attorneys at Law 150 in an Independence Day special at Caraway Speedway.

After nearly three months between events, the familiar grounds of the .455-mile oval provide the perfect setting to work out the cobwebs, especially for those drivers that have been inactive during the break. Caraway has played host to five times as many races as any other track in southern tour history.

One of those idle competitors has quite a history at Caraway as well. George Brunnhoelzl III has recorded 10 wins at the venerable oval in rural Sophia, North Carolina, the current Whelen Southern Modified Tour record. He’s also won the July 4th weekend event in each of the two previous seasons, as well as in 2009.

Beech Ridge 06/28/2014 Results

Scarborough, ME — Windham’s Corey Bubar took the victory in the Pro Series 125 Saturday night, in a dominating performance. Bubar led most of the extended race and went on to be the first repeat winner in the Pro Series division.

After capturing the pole spot in qualifying, Bubar led the 25-car field to the green flag. Bubar led until a early race caution bunched the field back together. On the restart, Bubar faced Charlie Colby, of Newcastle. After battling side-by-side for a few laps, Colby was able to edge Bubar going into the first turn to capture the lead. Colby opened up a two car-length advantage over Bubar, but a caution on lap 26 set the two up for battle again.

Colby chose the outside leaders lane choice giving Bubar the inside groove. Bubar was able to pass Colby coming out of the fourth turn to regain the lead. Veteran Bryan Kruczek, of New Market, NH, started to charge his way to the front. By lap 30, Kruczek had passed Colby and set his sights on Bubar. On lap 39, Kruczek passed Bubar with ease and opened up a five car length advantage.

Davis Returns to Form, Victorious at Star Speedway

Epping, NH (June 28, 2014) — Jeremy Davis returned to the Granite State Pro Stock Series in fine fashion, picking up the win at the Star 100 at Star Speedway.

A strong field of 31 cars attempted to make the feature for the first of two races at Star Speedway in the 2014 season. After qualifying, 22 cars took the green for the Star 100.

Pole sitter Dillon Moltz had the car to beat early, as the Waterford, CT driver shot out of the gate at every restart, sending his RB Performance/Brackett Mechanical Chevrolet to the point each time. Contact with a car being put a lap down sent Moltz spinning in turn 2. Davis then inherited the lead, and was the cream of the crop from mid-race on. Matt Frahm’s day took a turn in the wrong direction, as he was involved in an incident on lap 40. Davis once again held onto the point, and held Brad Babb off until Babb and Barry Gray made contact on lap 69, sending both drivers to the rear of the field, and ending George “Mad Dog” Bessette’s night, as heavy front end damage knocked Bessette out for the rest of the evening. Davis then had Dillon Moltz breathing back down his neck, as the youngster fought his way back through the field. The two would engage in battle down to the final laps, when Davis proved to be too strong, and pulled away with the victory.

Saturday 6/28 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Results

Waterford, CT (June 28, 2014) – Seven racing events were on Saturday night’s card at Waterford Speedbowl, settting the stage for an action packed night of motorsports. Picking up NASCAR Whelen All-American Series wins included Keith Rocco of Berlin in the SK Modifieds®, Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton in the Valenti Auto Mall Late Models and Corey Barry of Plainfield in the SK Light Modifieds.   Garrett Denton of Hope Valley, RI checkered the Mini Stocks and Ryan Waterman of Danielson picked up an exciting victory in the Street Stock race. Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott won another INEX Legend Cars feature and Ledyard’s Corey Coates won the visiting New England Truck Series race.

Rocco checkered his sixth SK Modified® race of the year in 12 events for the division after an impressive crossover move landed him the lead in the second half of the race. Rob Janovic Jr. of Waterford led the opening laps until Tim Jordan took command after a lap-8 restart. Jordan, from Plainfield, bolted out to a quick lead while Rocco moved through the top cars into second position on lap-10. Rocco closed in and trailed Jordan until caution on lap-22 slowed the field. Rocco’s crossover came following the restart, when Jordan fended off Rocco’s brief outside bid. Rocco traded the outside lane, dropping to the bottom of the track exiting turn four to make a run underneath Jordan as they completed lap-23. Rocco finished off the move out of turn two to get away from Jordan and survived four late restarts to close out the victory. Jordan wound up second and Tyler Chadwick of Ledyard ended up with a podium finish, in third.

Donnie Wilson Walks Away From Montgomery With Third Southern Super Series Win

Oklahoman Inherits Lead After Grill’s Crash & Cruises to Montgomery Victory Lane

(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Donnie Wilson is using the 2014 season to prove that the past year’s bad luck is far in his rear-view mirror.

After being shut out of victory lane for a variety of bad-luck reasons in 2013, Wilson, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, earned his second-straight and third overall Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco victory Saturday night at Alabama’s Montgomery Motor Speedway.

When Augie Grill crashed out of the lead after showing the way for the first 99 circuits, Wilson inherited the lead that he would not relinquish over the final 26 laps. The 43-year-old Wilson then sped away from a torrid battle between Hunter Robbins, Bubba Pollard and Daniel Hemric for second that he was happy to watch from well out in front.

The 28-year-old from Riverhead scored his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win Saturday night in the Hoosier Tire 200 at Riverhead Raceway.

Goodale powered the No. 58 GAF Roofing/RBSCorp.com Chevrolet past Ted Christopher shortly after a Lap 170 restart and led the final 25 laps en route to the victory.

Goodale’s previous best finish in 77 starts was second at Riverhead last June. He also finished runner-up in the inaugural UNOH Battle At The Beach at Daytona International Speedway.

Cabral Chasing History at Twin State

CLAREMONT, NH — (June 27, 2014) — Four-time NEMA Midget champion Randy Cabral of Plymouth, MA will be in pursuit of his third consecutive victory and a series record on Saturday night at Twin State Speedway. Cabral is looking to tie the series record for most consecutive wins at one track (5). Two drivers share the record: Johnny Mann at Thompson (1972-75) and NEAR Hall of Famer Drew Fornoro at Monadnock (1982-83). Fellow inductee Dave Humphrey had four in a row at Stafford (1969-70) and Star 70-71.

“It will be tough cause I’ll be starting out back,” Cabral said. “And three in a row hasn’t been done a lot or five in a row, so I got history against me right now.”

The flat, egg-shaped 1/3 mile opened in 1947. Six-time champion Dave Humphrey won the inaugural race in 1973. Kyle Carpenter won the second event in 2005, while Bobby Santos, III scored in 2008. Cabral has won the four events since.

Purse Announced for Qualifying Races at NAPA SK 5k at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — The excitement continues to build for the inaugural running of the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K. It has been dubbed the biggest race in SK Modified® history and the drivers are ready. With a posted purse of over $27,000, paying $5,000 to the winner, it is certainly the biggest pay day the SK Modified® division has ever seen.

In addition to the posted purse and weekly contingency prizes, drivers will also have the opportunity to make some extra cash before the feature race even begins. To add a little excitement to what is already expected to be a very challenging race to qualify for, there will be additional purse money awarded to the top 3 finishers in each qualifying race. Each heat race winner will receive $250, 2nd will receive $150, and 3rd will receive $100. Total additional purse money to be allotted for qualifying races will be $2,000.

“The drivers and fans wanted a big event and I think we are delivering,” said Stafford General Manager Mark Arute. “We want our SK teams to know that we appreciate the show they put on each week. We know it’s one of the best divisions in the country and we want to reward them for that.”

Doug Coby Looking Forward to NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Over the last three seasons at Stafford Motor Speedway, Doug Coby has had a stranglehold on victory lane in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competition. Coby has won half of the 10 NWMT races run at Stafford since the start of the 2012 season, but he hasn’t been able to win an SK Modified® feature at Stafford since reuniting with car owner Glenn Johnson. Coby recorded six podium finishes last season with 3 second and 3 third place efforts, but he came up short in the win column. Coby is again knocking on the door to NAPA Victory Lane this season and he feels like a win could be right around the corner for the #15 team.

“We’re pretty happy with the car the last couple of races and we’re really satisfied with the base setup we’ve come up with,” said Coby. “We could be on the verge of winning or we could still be a little ways off. It all depends on things like how traffic goes, where we start, and how the races play out. I think last Friday I might have used the tires up a little too much in the outside groove but we’re getting to where we need to be to win. It’s just a matter of being able to do that week after week.”

With his success at Stafford in the Whelen Modified Tour races, a prime opportunity for Coby to get his first SK Modified win since the 2009 season is the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k on July 4th. The race distance will be determined by a fan vote where the top-3 choices will be placed into a hat with the polesitter drawing a number to determine the lap count. With the top-3 current choices being 100-laps, 80-laps, and 76-laps, the choice will almost certainly be between 2 and 2 and a half times longer than a regular SK Modified® feature, which could play right into Coby’s hands.

Eric Berndt Getting Hot Just In Time for NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — For Cromwell native Eric Berndt and the #66 Cos’ Central Auto SK Modified® team, the 2014 season has been trending in the right direction for them just in time to carry a ton of positive momentum into the July 4th NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k. Berndt encountered some issues in the season opening NAPA Spring Sizzler feature, but in the three races since then he has two fifth place finishes and he nearly won the June 6th feature, coming home second to Ryan Preece.

“The car has been really good, it’s a matter of staying out of trouble, which we got into at the Sizzler,” said Berndt. “Now we’re really happy with the car, we’ve been making some real small adjustments each week to make it better and hopefully we’ve put ourselves into the right opportunity to come up big. This car is pretty equal to our #54 car chassis wise and we have a really good motor package, which seems to be working really good this year.”

Berndt is no stranger to finding success in longer distance SK Modified® events. Berndt has several wins in extra distance events at other tracks and he won the SK 100 at Stafford in 2003. His past success has him excited about his chances in the $5,000 to win NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k on July 4th.

Defending SK Modified® Champion Woody Pitkat Excited About Chances in NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — When it comes to extra distance racing at Stafford Motor Speedway, Woody Pitkat has been a driver at the forefront of success. Pitkat has taken home the checkered flag and the winner’s check twice before in the SK Modified® ranks, winning the SK 100 in 2007 and the SK 150 in 2008. Pitkat’s long distance success hasn’t been limited to just the SK Modified® division. He has also won a 100 and a 150 lap feature in the Late Model division. With such a history of success in extra distance events, he is looking forward to his prospects in the Inaugural NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k, which will be held on Friday, July 4th at Stafford and carries with it a purse of over $27,000 and a guaranteed minimum payday of $5,000 to the winner.

“I’m real excited about the race,” said Pitkat. “It’s looking like with the fan vote that it’s going to be a long distance race so I feel like that’s going to be a plus for me because I seem to do better on the longer distance races. We’re hoping we can get another good finish and hopefully come out of there with a win. That would definitely be a good race to win. Winning that race would be huge for everybody on the team. We’re all working really well together and everyone was super excited that we finished second last week. The way that Stafford is doing this race with letting the fans vote and get involved with the race, it would be a pretty cool race to put in your record book. It would definitely be a big momentum booster for us for the rest of the season.”

Pitkat is the defending SK Modified® track champion, but over the winter he switched teams to become the driver of the #50 Skowyra family owned team. A new team and driver combination can be a tough hurdle to overcome, but Pitkat and the Skowyra team seem to have things well in hand. Since the Pitkat/Skowyra combination debuted with an 11th place finish in the season opening NAPA Spring Sizzler, they have steadily improved each week. Pitkat has finished 8th, 5th, and then 2nd last week behind Chase Dowling as the 2014 season has progressed. After finishing second, that leaves only one final position for improvement and Pitkat is confident that he and the Skowyra team can achieve that final position and win their first race together.

Chase Dowling Becomes Youngest SK Modified® Feature Winner in Stafford Motor Speedway History

Stafford Springs, CT — In only his second season of modified competition at Stafford Motor Speedway, Roxbury native Chase Dowling has proven to be a quick study. Last season, with no modified racing experience at Stafford Speedway, Dowling found himself in victory lane in his very first SK Light Modified start, then went on to win 6 more races. Dowling narrowly missed out on winning the championship by a 4-point margin and in the off-season he made the move up the ladder to Stafford’s premier SK Modified division. Dowling showed again how quickly he adapts to a new car with a third place finish in the season opening NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler. After two finishes of 16th and 11th following his Sizzler podium, Dowling became the youngest winner in Stafford’s SK Modified® history at 16 years, 5 months, and 5 days when he took the checkered flag in the June 20 SK Modified Xtra Mart Xtra Distance feature.

“Last year our goal was to win one race in the SK Lights and we ended up winning 7 and this year I didn’t believe that would happen,” said Dowling. “I was thinking top-3’s would be awesome and I’m looking at the 4th race in and we won. I figured we’d need about 10 races or so to get settled in with the team this year. I’m still shocked.”

Dowling’s win was anything but easy. As Dowling was leading the race, he had some of the very best in modified racing behind him. Lined up behind Dowling were former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champions Ted Christopher and Doug Coby, SK Modified® champions Christopher, Woody Pitkat, and Keith Rocco, and SK veterans and feature winners Dan Avery and Eric Berndt.

MacDonald To Make Sprint Cup Series Debut

Joins All New England Team For Race At NHMS

ROWLEY, Mass. – Local racing legend Eddie MacDonald from Rowley, Massachusetts, will drive the No. 32 Go FAS Racing Ford Fusion owned by fellow New Englanders Archie St. Hilaire from Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and long-time NASCAR crew chief Frank Stoddard from No. Haverhill, New Hampshire. Completing the all-New England team is Michael Alden, President and CEO of Blue Vase Marketing based in Beverly, Massachusetts, as the primary sponsor aboard the Go FAS Racing entry in the Camping World Sales 301 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) on July 13.

Archie St. Hilaire is no stranger to New England racing as a long time participant in the old Busch North Series, currently the K&N Pro Series East, before moving on to the Nationwide Series while Stoddard cut his teeth watching and learning from one of the greats in New England, Stub Fadden from his hometown. The No. 32 on the Go FAS Racing Ford is in honor of Fadden and his car’s number for nearly four decades. The duo joined forces this year to compete in the Sprint Cup Series and instantly choose Eddie Mac to drive for them at the “Magic Mile.”

“I was talking with Mike (Alden) some time ago and he expressed interest in sponsoring a New England driver for the NHMS race and asked me if I knew of anyone, “ chuckled St Hilaire. “I immediately said “I sure do” and gave him Eddie’s name. Eddie is a great driver with a lot of successful experience at this track with six wins. I love Eddie, his family, and his entire race team. They are a great bunch of people and I couldn’t be happier for Eddie and our team. It will be a lot of fun and with Eddie’s experience we hope to have a strong run.”

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

• Defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ryan Preece will look to get his season back on the right track Saturday night in the Hoosier Tire 200 at Riverhead (New York) Raceway. Last season, Preece swept the two races at the quarter-mile oval, where he also competes on a regular basis in the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series modified division. Preece finished sixth at Waterford (Connecticut) Speedbowl on Saturday, his best finish of the year. He is 13th in the standings, 60 points behind another Riverhead regular Justin Bonsignore.
