Lee USA Speedway Results for Friday, June 20
Lee, NH – Another exciting Friday night program of weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action at Lee USA Speedway took the green flag on Friday night with a pre-race autograph session, spectator drags, the S.T.A.R. vintage racers, and the annual “Scout Night” among the added attractions.
Double features were on tap for the EKeys 4Cars Supermodifieds, and it was Mike Spurling of nearby Rochester getting the job done in the first 30-lapper, jumping out from the pole and leading flag to flag to pick up his first main event win of the 2014 campaign over Candia’s Jake Stergios and defending champ Tommy Tombarello, Jr. of Haverhill, MA
In the nightcap, Groveland, MA’s Mike Murphy looked to be well on his way to victory as he led well past the halfway mark, but rookie competitor Lance Barthelemy snuck past to take over the lead late in the race, and the Fremont driver held off a hard-charging Stergios to score career win number on in the Supermodified ranks.
Sparky MacIver of Sandown grabbed third place honors, with Tombarello, Murphy, Kingston racer Kyle Sawyer, Spurling, Leslie Keyser of Northfield, Jim Barker, and Bobby Webber of Topsfield, MA rounding out the top ten finishers in the second feature.
Epping’s Ricky Porter battled side by side with polesitter Patrick Stewart before moving out to the lead in the Prime Warehouse Late Model Sportsman main event, and he logged several laps at the head of the field before giving up the point.
Caution flew on lap eleven for an incident on the frontstretch that knocked Beverly, MA’s Stewart and rookie contender Mark Parenteau of Groveland, MA out of action and brought Porter back to the field. Racing action quickly resumed, and just a few laps after the restart, Brentwood racer Jimmy Russell worked his way past Porter to take command.
Russell led the rest of the way to win by a comfortable margin, with Bobby Melvin of Groton, MA up in the late laps to score a strong runner-up finish in his 2014 debut. Nick Maniatis of Hooksett came home third, with hometown racer Alby Ovitt, Porter, Alfred, ME’s Ray Dinsmore, Geoff Rollins of Groton, MA, Barrington entrants Kyle Roy and Tom Harton, and Jesse Bousquet of Pittsfield closing out the top ten.
In David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stock action, it was opening day winner Dennis Dumas of Nashua making a return appearance in victory lane, dominating the action to garb his second win of the season in convincing fashion.
Portsmouth’s Billy Clement claimed a solid runner-up finish, with Brian DeStefano of Tewksbury, MA, Sandown’s Brian Thompson, rookie Dylan Bilodeau of Epping, defending champ Patrick Tanguay of Lebanon, ME, Epping’s Matt Kawejsza, Dave MacDonald of Tewksbury, MA, Kevin Bowman of N. Grafton, MA, and Chris Harding of Lebanon, ME the rest of the top ten.
Bouncing back from a 14th place finish in the opener, Nottingham driver Evan Horvath was the class of the field in his Red Cup Racing entry, and took down his first win of the 2014 campaign in the action-packed Benson Lumber and Hardware Ironman feature event. Horvath held off a tough Jeff Nadeau of Epping, who was right on his back bumper for the last several laps of the race.
Nadeau’s runner-up result was his best finish this year, with Wayne Osborne, defending champion Travis Hollins of Milford, opening night winner Tyler Mitchell of Dracut, MA, Seabrook’s Adam Knowles, Christin DeStefano of Tewksbury, MA, Hannah Shaw of Chester, Epping’s Jeff Bennett, and Scott Farrington third through tenth.
Jesse Tellier of Dracut, MA continued his perfect 2014 campaign with another checkered flag in the 4-cylinder portion of the Ironman event. Mark Pennell of Hollis Center, ME topped Nick Maniatis for the win in the Spectator Drags, Joe Gause of Londonderry grabbed the win in the STAR Sportsman main, and Charlie Wilcox of Dayville, CT took top honors in the STAR Modified main.
Next Friday, June 27th, Lee will be hosting the Valenti Modified Racing Series along with our NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Divisions with double features in the Ironman Division and racing will begin at 7:00pm. If you should need any further information please call the office at 978-462-4252.
