Call Before You Dig 811 Challenge to Crown Winners on CBYD 811 Night Aug. 8th at StaffordMotor Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — When the green flag came out during the 43rd Annual NAPA Spring Sizzler back in April, it not only kicked off the race for the 2014 track championships at Stafford Motor Speedway, but it also kicked off the Call Before You Dig 811 Challenge.  While drivers have been accumulating track championship points during the season, they have also been accumulating points for the CBYD 811 Challenge, which will award five drivers each with an $811 bonus from CBYD, for a total bonus of $4,055.

Whereas NASCAR Whelen All-American Series teams get 50 points for a victory and each subsequent position is worth 2 fewer points, the CBYD 811 Challenge awards each feature winner with 100 points and each subsequent position below first place is worth 5 points less.  While NWAAS teams are trying to accumulate as many points as possible for their championship efforts, the CBYD 811 Challenge comes with a twist.  The CBYD 811 Challenge will come to a close with the feature events to be held on Friday, August 8th at Stafford and in order to win the bonus money from CBYD, drivers have to come the closest they can to 811 points without going over.  In order for drivers to remain eligible to win the bonus money from CBYD, drivers cannot have missed more than one race during the season or have any post-race technical infringements.

Last season’s Inaugural CBYD 811 Challenge saw Eric Berndt, Ted Christopher, and Todd Owen from the SK Modified® division, Justin Bren from the Limited Late Model division, and Cliff Saunders from the DARE Stock division as the five lucky drivers who came the closest to accumulating 811 points without going over to each take home an $811 bonus from CBYD.  With 2 races left to go to decide the 2014 CBYD 811 Challenge winners, many drivers from all 5 NWAAS divisions are still mathematically eligible to finish close to but less than 811 points.  Fans can see the CBYD 811 Challenge standings on www.staffordspeedway.com by clicking the CBYD 811 Challenge Standings link found under the Results tab on Stafford’s homepage.

Stafford Speedway’s Late Models Racing for Xtra Cash in Aug. 1 Late Model Xtra Mart Xtra D 60-lap Event

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford’s Late Model division takes center stage this Friday night with their double distance 60-lap Xtra Mart Xtra D feature event.  As the Late Model drivers take to the track, they will be racing for over $8,600 in total posted awards, which is more than double what they race for in a regular 30-lap feature event.  The race purse is almost $6,400 with the winner taking home $1,125 and tenth place paying $250, which is double what a 5th place finish would earn in a regular 30-lap feature.

Adding to the total posted awards is a $1,000 bonus from Xtra Mart Convenience Stores, which will be split among the top-5 finishers for $200 per position.  Additional contingency awards that are available are a $125 bonus from Connecticut Trailers for the feature winner, and New England Racing Fuel will present a $25 fuel certificate to each of the top-3 finishing cars using the Stafford Late Model Spec Engine as well as an additional $50 fuel certificate to the third place finisher.

Among the favorites to take the checkered flag this Friday night have to be Jay Stuart and Adam Gray.  Stuart and Gray are 1-2 in the Late Model point standings and they are also the only drivers to have won more than one feature thus far during the 2014 season.  Stuart is in fact coming off two consecutive victories that have pushed his 2014 win total up to 3, while Gray has 2 wins this season.  Gray is the defending champion of last year’s 60-lap Late Model race and the Xtra Mart Xtra D race as well. He is also the defending Late Model track champion.  Stuart is also a former Late Model track champion, with his championship coming back in the 1994 season.  Should Stuart go on to win the championship this season, it would be a Stafford record for time elapsed between a driver’s first and second championship wins.

Barrett Carries Momentum into Bowman Gray

Team owner Chris Our of Harwich, MA said he “can’t wait” for Saturday night. Rookie Tommy Barrett, Jr. of Millis, MA will make his first NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour start at Bowman Gray Stadium. The Strutmasters.com 199 is the annual series appearance at the historic Winston-Salem, NC oval.

“Brad and I were going down anyway to watch and meet some of his customers,” Our said. “Then Tommy wins at Seekonk, so I said let’s run Saturday. Brad’s like I’m in. Let’s do it. So here we are.”

Barrett was seventh in his first race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and finished fourth at Monadnock. Last Wednesday, Barrett took home the $10,000 Open Wheel Wednesday race at Seekonk Speedway.

“The momentum is huge,” Barrett said. “From such a bad start to a top 10 at Loudon then a top five at Monadnock and now the 10k to win at Seekonk, things are starting to look up and hopefully we can start clicking off some wins in the 22 car.”

Bobby Santos, III Looks to Continue Strong Runs at Stafford Speedway in Aug. 8 Call Before You Dig 811 Whelen Mod Tour 150

Stafford Springs, CT — As the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour prepares to take the green flag next Friday night at Stafford Motor Speedway for the 24th Annual Call Before You Dig 811 150, Bobby Santos, III will be looking to continue his mastery of the Connecticut half-mile facility.  Santos has recorded 6 of his 14 career NWMT wins at Stafford and he has also won 7 of his 14 career NWMT pole positions at Stafford.  Santos’ NWMT results have all come in the last 18 NWMT races held at Stafford since the 2010 NAPA Spring Sizzler.  But Santos’ Stafford success isn’t limited to just the Whelen Modified Tour.  He has also recorded 2 NEMA Midget wins and he won the $50,000 bonus at Stafford in August 2006 when he won both the Midget and PRA Big Car Series events in the same night.

“Stafford is a track that I’m familiar with and it’s a place that I’ve gone to my whole life growing up,” said Santos.  “It’s a track that I want to be successful at and my teams have given me really good cars at Stafford, which is the most important thing.  I think the track fits my driving style, I like the flatter tracks and Stafford is definitely a track that I enjoy going to.”

Santos comes to Stafford sitting third in an ultra-tight championship race.  Doug Coby currently leads the NWMT standings by 4 points over Justin Bonsignore, 8 points over Santos, 13 points over Ted Christopher, and 33 points over Ryan Preece.  Santos is the NWMT leader in wins during the 2014 season with three, but with finishes of 10th and 11th mixed around his win at Loudon and with such a tight championship race, having Stafford next on the schedule puts a smile on Santos’ face.

The Racing Scholar: The Next Opportunity Awaits Staropoli

Patrick Staropoli, 24, of Plantation, FL is hunting for a new ride. The inaugural Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge winner finished fifth in his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West debut at Spokane for Bill McAnally Racing. The attention and the feel-good story should have ended there.

“It kind of eats at you, but at the same time I got a lot of confirmation this year that I belong there and that I can run there,” Staropoli said. “…  I know that if I get that right opportunity again that I can go out there and get it done.”

A third generation driver, Staropoli’s grandfather drove midgets in the 1940s and 50s at places like Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, NY and Wall Stadium in Belmar, NJ. The family relocated to Florida, where Staropoli’s father Nick raced Street Stocks and Late Models. His father raced “religiously” at Hialeah in the 1980s and 90s, before touring in the 90s for a few years. Patrick was at his first race at six months old, watching his dad.

Polewarczyk, Jr. Favorite to Win ACT 150 at Beech Ridge

PoleWaterbury, VT – The American Canadian Tour (ACT) will next appear at the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. The Hudson, New Hampshire native, Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. (Pole) has to be considered a favorite to win the race. In the 2014 ACT Championship standings Pole has a comfortable 56 point lead over second place racer Jimmy Hebert, from Williamstown, VT. He is also winless so far during the 2014 campaign.

Pole has compiled an impressive record during the first half of the 2014 season. In the ACT races to date, the 97NH team has three second place finishes, two third place finishes and two fourth place finishes. He also led the Pro All Star Super Late Model event at Beech Ridge and contended for wins in the Star and White Mountain events he entered this year, and recently won the Lee USA Granite State Pro Stock race. Pole won the 150 lap Beech Ridge event in 2010; he was runner up to Eddie MacDonald from Rowley, MA in 2013.

“I guess you could say we are a little frustrated that we have not won an ACT race yet this year, but our goal was to win the ACT Championship and we have worked hard to position ourselves as we head to the home stretch. I like the 1/3rd mile at Beech Ridge, it is kind of a neutral track for ACT, and nobody really has a lot of laps there so we kind of all start out on a clean page. I really want a win, so hopefully we will get lucky and take care of that next week (August 9th),” said Pole.

Lascuola Sets Record in Seekonk Romp

Abington Teen Seeks LM Success, ACT Tour

Defending champion Nick Lascuola, of Abington, MA, has set a torrid pace in the Nick’s Pit Stop Legends Cars at Seekonk Speedway this season. He has won all seven Friday night races, and the last two races in 2013. That’s not enough for Lascuola. He wants to go undefeated this season and win the championship.

“It takes a lot of hard work each week,” Lascuola said. “We prepare the car all week long and make sure it’s perfect. Come race day you have to go through the field smooth, but also have to be fast without getting into trouble.

“So sometimes it can be difficult, especially when you have Robins get out front first cause each week I need to chase him down from about a half a straight to a full straight. So you need to (be) perfect every lap and consistent even with all the lapped traffic. But also you have to have a little luck fall your way and a couple times we’ve had cautions that have fell our way and helped us out. Then other haven’t helped us out but we work and push the through it each week.”

Rewrite: Belsito Records First Pro Stock Victory at Seekonk

SEEKONK, MA — Patience and taking chances paid off for Angelo Belsito of Auburn, MA. Belsito kept the lead on the final restart in Saturday’s Pro Stock feature against Kevin Folan and held off Craig Weinstein in the final four laps for his first victory.

“Thank the guys, I couldn’t be out here without them,” Belsito said. “Jeff Belyea, my other friend Jeff, my spotter Mike, my dad, my stepmom, both their companies. All these people that help me week in and week out.”

Belsito said that his competitors were trying to win the race on the first lap. Belsito was mired in traffic early in the race on the inside. Belsito used a pair of crossover moves to gain positions and setup his track position late in the race. He gained two by moving low when the top lane slowed and the second one came when battling Weinstein inside the top five.

“As a spotter, you can’t even come over the radio fast enough,” Belsito said. “The move’s already got to be taken.”

Rowan Pennink Wins Inaugural NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action with the Inaugural NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k, which paid the winner $5,000 out of a purse of over $27,000.  Stafford Speedway held an online vote prior to the race with fans able to vote on the qualifying procedure, the number of laps for the feature, the tire rule, and how the lineup would be handicapped.  The qualifying, tire rule, and handicapping procedures were decided by the fan vote prior to the race but the lap number remained a mystery to everyone.  A weighted draw was held just prior to the start of the race with the top-3 fan choices of 76, 80, and 100 laps in a bucker.  The 100-lap chip was drawn, making the race 100-laps long.  After a 2014 season that has seen more downs than ups for Huntingdon Valley, PA driver Rowan Pennink, he used a strong move in turns 3+4 to take the lead from Ryan Preece as they were heading towards the white flag and took home the $5,000 winner’s check.

In other feature action during the night, Jay Stuart recorded his second consecutive Late Model feature victory, Dylan Menditto won the SK Light feature, David Arute took his first Ltd. Late Model checkered flag of the 2014, Frank L’Etoile, Jr. picked up his first win of the 2014 season in the DARE Stock feature, and Mike Christopher, Jr. picked up his first win of the year in the Legend Cars feature.

In the 100-lap SK Modified® feature event, Rowan Pennink took the lead from the pole while Keith Rocco moved into second.  Frank Ruocco settled into third, with Ted Christopher quickly moving into fourth and Eric Berndt fifth.  Rocco was already searching for a line that would allow him to make a pass on Pennink and he found that groove on lap-5 as he passed Pennink in turn 3.  Pennink came right back to the inside of Rocco on lap-6 and he had the lead at the line by a nose.  Pennink and Rocco ran side by side until lap-10 when Pennink got clear of Rocco.

SEEKONK, MA – It was back to the egg for Randy Cabral at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday night. 15 years ago this week, Cabral’s breakthrough victory was the Boston Louie. Woody Pitkat Looking to Get 2014 Season Back on Positive Track at Stafford in Call Before You Dig 811 150

Stafford Springs, CT — The Call Before You Dig 811 150 that is scheduled for August 8th at Stafford Motor Speedway will kick off the second half of the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season.  As the second half of the 2014 NWMT season gets started, one driver who will be looking to change their fortunes around is Woody Pitkat, driver of the #88 Buzz Chew Chevrolet.

Pitkat and the #88 team began the 2014 season with a strong effort, winning the pole for the season opening race and scoring top-7 finishes in each of the first four races of the year.  After the Waterford race in June, Pitkat was fourth in the points standings and only 8 points behind Justin Bonsignore, who was the points leader at that stage of the season.  Since that time, Pitkat has recorded three consecutive finishes of 20th or worse, which have dropped him from fourth down to tenth place in the standings, 58 points behind Doug Coby.  If there is one track where Pitkat can turn his fortunes around, it would be Stafford, which is his home track.

Creeden won the event – round No. 3 of the Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP – in spectacular fashion, passing superstar drivers Danny Johnson and Matt Sheppard en route to the front, and then fending off both Stewart Friesen and Andy Bachetti in the final circuits.

“This is awesome,” Creeden exclaimed after climbing to the roof of his car in Victory Lane. “To get up there and pass the best of the best, it was unbelievable.”

The 31-year-old Creeden earned $9,164 cash for just 48 laps of feature racing on the 3/10ths-mile clay oval including the $6,888 posted purse, $2,000 ‘Gambler’s Bonus’ and lap money collected.

Bonsignore Wins O’Reilly 200 at Monadnock Speedway

IMG_4916WINCHESTER, NH — Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, New York won his second straight O’Reilly 200 and his fifth career win on the Monadnock high banks Saturday night when he made a lap 175 pass on leader Ryan Preece, then ran off to an almost four second lead.

IMG_4931Earlier in the day Bonsignore also set fast time for the Coors Light Pole Award, but could only watch Preece drive away with the lead at the four lap mark. The race surprisingly went caution free, allowing Preece to build a half track lead at one point. By the 100 lap mark only six cars were running on the lead lap while the field ran in a single line formation. By lap 160 Preece’s East West Marine sponsored #16 started to fade and Bonsignore steadily gained ground until lap 175, when the M3 Technologies # 51 motored by, to become the final leader of the 200 lap grind. Eric Goodale started and finished in the third spot. Rookie Tommy Barrett, Jr. was fourth and current points leader Doug Coby fifth.
