Avery Stoehr Leads NEMA to Seekonk

Rookie Avery Stoehr of Lakeville, MA leads the Northeastern Midget Association to Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday night for the annual Boston Louie Memorial Classic presented by Acquia. He leads four time champion Randy Cabral by one point. Cabral has finished second or better in the last four races, including two wins.

“It’s been going really good,” Stoehr said of his start to the season. “We’ve been making improvements every race and been competitive.” Stoehr’s goal for the remainder of the season is to “Just try to make it through all the races in one piece and stay competitive,” Stoehr said.

“(I) always look forward to Seekonk, being the closest track to my house,” Stoehr said. Their lone appearance at Seekonk this season will also be the first televised race for the club on MAVTV. “It’s good. I think a lot of people are looking forward to it.”
Stoehr won the Marvin Rifchin Trophy race at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday night for his second win this season. It was the first race at the 3/8 mile oval since 2003. Stoehr described it as “really fun, like a big Seekonk.”

“It’s great to win at Oxford, especially on their 250 weekend,” Stoehr said. “I love all the Maine tracks. They all seem to be similar and we have had good runs at all of them.”

“We lined up on the restart and I just tried to get into my groove and focus on hitting all marks and hoped I was fast enough to stay out front,” Stoehr said. “It’s great racing with a guy like Randy, (Cabral) who has had a lot of success and to be able to beat him is great for my team, who’s worked hard all season.”

Stoehr was quick to thank, “My dad (Russ), Carl, Curt, and Motorcars International, Skater’s Edge, Macco, Circle Performance.”

The next race for NEMA is the Shane Hammond Memorial at Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night. Stoehr has reason to be confident at Waterford as he won his first NEMA Lites and NEMA Midget races at the 3/8 mile shoreline oval.

“Looking forward to the Shane race,” Stoehr said. “We have won that the last two years in the Lites and it’s going to be a long race and my car seems to get better on the long runs, so I think we should be pretty stout.”
