Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher this Weekend at CSP

PEORIA, Ariz. (September 16, 2015) – The term “excitement” could very well be an understatement as the West Coast Late Models take to the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park for this weekend’s Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher on Friday and Saturday

While the West Coast Late Models headline the two-night stand at the popular Phoenix-area track, also in action on both nights are the IMCA Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Renegades and Mod Lites.

Both nights of racing action get underway at 7:00 p.m. following an open practice session from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday night.

Steve Drake split West Coast Late Model honors with Pat Doar at last year’s Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher after sweeping to victory during both nights of the 2013 edition of the event.

While Drake has found the CSP oval to his liking with three wins in the past four Mr. Excitement tribute features, he enters the weekend just 30 points behind Tony Toste in the West Coast Late Model series championship points chase.

With Toste and Drake set to settle the score in the pair of season-ending events for the series, others among the current top five include Cody Laney, Larry Childress and Clay Daly.

In 9th World Vapor IMCA Modified action, Garrett Funk holds a 22 point edge over Shawn Zelenka with George Fronsman just another two points back in third in the point chase while Ricky Thornton, Jr., reached victory lane in five of the last eight events.

Thornton, Jr., also ranks as the most recent winner in Arizona Differential Pure Stock action with a triumph in the Stock Car Shootout 100 just two weeks ago.  Suffering mechanical woes while leading in the late stages of the 100 lapper, Matt Martinez retains a slim three-point lead over Zack Madrid in the chase for the crown.

Daniel Romero posted his third Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegade feature win of the year last time out on September 6 to extend his points lead to 34 points over Chuck Thornton with Jason Crowe another 21 points back in third.

Chaz Baca, Jr., and Tyler Merrill split AMA Mod Lite wins during the most recent weekend of action.  Merrill ranks as the only driver with multiple regular season wins in Mod Lite competition as he extended his win total to three with the September 6 triumph.

A general admission two-day pass to this weekend’s Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher is just $35 with children ages 7-12 just $15.

Single night tickets are $18 on Friday and $20 on Saturday for adults with children $10 each night.
