PRACTICE: Coby Fast Again

Three-Time Thompson Winner Tops Practice

THOMPSON, Conn. – For a driver that has led 80-percent of the laps contested en route to victories in each of the three NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park this year, it’s no surprise Doug Coby is once again fast at the Connecticut oval.

Coby posted a fast lap of 18.705 seconds (120.289 mph) to lead the 33 Sunoco World Series 150 entries in Saturday’s 90-minute practice session. The Milford, Connecticut, native will attempt on Sunday to become just the third driver in 31 years of Whelen Modified Tour racing to record a season sweep at Thompson following dominant victories in April, June and August.

In the bigger picture, Coby also enters the season finale tied atop the championships standings with Ryan Preece while Woody Pitkat is just four points behind. Pitkat finished second on the speed chart Saturday at 18.715 (120.224) and Preece was sixth at 18.775 (119.840).

Keith Rocco finished third in practice followed by Timmy Solomito and Chase Dowling. Succeeding Preece in the top 10 were Ted Christopher, Justin Bonsignore, Steve Masse and Patrick Emerling.

Coors Light Pole Award qualifying is slated for 4 p.m. today and the Sunoco World Series 150 will go green on Sunday at approximately 3:45 p.m.
