Heywood’s Historic Championship Celebrated at Airborne Speedway Banquet

Title winners crowned for 2015 racing season

ALTONA, NY – More than 350 people celebrated Airborne Park Speedway’s 62nd racing season on Saturday, November 14, as the Plattsburgh, NY track officially crowned its champions for 2015. The Rainbow Wedding & Banquet Hall in Altona, NY hosted the year-end fete for stock car drivers from the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere and go-kart racers from the Competition Kart Series.

Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh was met with a raucous standing ovation for his fourth consecutive championship in the NASCAR-sanctioned J&S Steel Modified division. Heywood set a new track record with the unprecedented mark, and will also be recognized at a ceremony at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC on December 11.

Fairfax, VT native Richie Turner collected the second Key R-D Trailer Sales Renegade title of his career and his first since 2004, while Chris LaVair of Gabriels, NY was crowned for the first time in the Busch Beer Mini-Modified class.

O’Donnell, Moodie, Davis Honored at Banquet of Champions

Barre, VT – Thunder Road International Speedbowl honored its 2015 Champions with the annual Banquet of Champions at the Barre Elks Club on Saturday, November 14. Derrick O’Donnell received the top honors for the third consecutive season in the Thunder Road Late Model division, while Brendan Moodie and Jamie Davis earned their first Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen and Allen Lumber Street Stock championships, respectively. 

North Haverhill, NH’s O’Donnell became the second driver in Thunder Road history to win three straight “King of the Road” crowns, joining Chuck Beede’s run from 1992-1994. O’Donnell’s championships came in his first three years in the division. He earned a career-high four wins in 2015, giving him a total of seven for his career. Among the victories was his second Memorial Day Classic triumph as well as a win in the Times Argus Mid-Season Championships. O’Donnell also finished second in the Milk Bowl and third in the Vermont Governor’s Cup. 

Westford’s Darrell Morin received Rookie of the Year honors for the Late Models. Morin won a season-long battle with Scott Coburn for the award.

Burlison Wins USCS Mini Sprint Finale at Riverside in Thrilling Photo Finish

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – “Are you kidding me?”

Those were the first words out of Malvern, Arkansas’ young gun Noah Burlison’s mouth as he pulled into USCS Victory Lane on Saturday night at Riverside International Speedway, unable to believe what he had just accomplished.

Burlison used a stunning all-or-nothing slide job to wrest the lead away from Kyle Carpenter in the final corner of the final lap of the micro sprint portion of the USCS Fall Nationals, winning a drag race to the line with the Baldwyn, Mississippi driver to score his first career USCS 600 Sprint Series victory.

Turpen Sweeps the Table; Clinches 2015 USCS National and Mid-South Titles as Crawley Wins Season Finale at Riverside

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – Benton, Arkansas’ Tim Crawley closed the 2015 United Sprint Car Series filtercharged by K&N season with a dominating performance on Saturday night, leading 35 of the 40 laps in the K&N Filters Fall Nationals 40 at Riverside International Speedway en route to his fifth series win of the season.

Crawley passed Cordova, Tennessee’s Morgan Turpen on lap six and led the rest of the way for his 76th career victory in USCS 360 sprint car competition.

“I saw that Sammy [Swindell] had gotten up to second and, you know, Sammy’s Sammy,” Crawley smiled USCS Victory Lane. “I got my elbows up [on the final restart] and told myself I was gonna make him earn it – and we did that tonight.”
