Monster Energy/Haas Automation Racing: Kurt Busch Atlanta Advance and Team Report

A League of His Own

KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina (Feb. 28, 2017) – For the first time in his 17-year Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career, Kurt Busch is undefeated. Having won Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, his first in the “Great American Race,” Busch is boasting a perfect 1-0 record.

To be fair, there is still a lot of racing to go – 35 points-paying events to be exact – but that hasn’t stopped the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champ from enjoying the fact that, for now, he is in a league of his own.

As the Daytona 500 champion, Busch has spent the last two days in a whirlwind of celebratory activities that included a breakfast ceremony Monday morning with members of the media and having his winning No. 41 Ford enshrined for display at Daytona. He followed that up with a trip to New York for a series of interviews and television show appearances, with more to come as the week continues.
In the midst of all of the fanfare that goes with winning the Daytona 500, the Las Vegas native has started turning his attention to the next event on the 2017 Cup Series schedule, which just so happens to be at a track where he has enjoyed unabashed success – Atlanta Motor Speedway.

No. 14 Haas Automation Racing: Clint Bowyer Atlanta Advance

CLINT BOWYER Already Bonding with New Owner Tony Stewart

KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina (Feb. 28, 2017) – Last year, when retiring three-time champion Tony Stewart was asked about Clint Bowyer, his 2017 replacement in the No. 14 Haas Automation Ford Fusion, Stewart offered an interesting description of Bowyer’s personality:

“Bowyer is like taking a thousand rubber balls and throwing them off the top of a building, then watching them bounce,” Stewart said with a laugh after playing a key role in recruiting Bowyer to the Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team he and Gene Haas formed in 2009 and has since won 37 races, a Daytona 500 and two championships.

Stewart’s sharp wit and Bowyer’s frenetic personality should make for some lively moments over the next several years at SHR and in the garage. But beneath the humor, each holds the other in high esteem. Bowyer says everyone who’s followed the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series knows Tony Stewart the driver, but there aren’t as many who are familiar with Stewart’s role and importance as a leader at SHR.

Steve Kenneway and David Banta Reunite for 2017 Season at TSMP

Steve Kenneway and David Banta are no strangers when it comes to finding success in a Limited Sportsman at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP). Kenneway, who previously raced the No. 55 Limited Sportsman for Banta Racing, is switching gears to the No. 26 and is building a brand new car in conjunction with Banta Racing for the 2017 season.

Kenneway has brought good fortune to the Banta team in years past. In 2012 he came in 4th in points after becoming the backup driver. In 2013 he celebrated his first large career milestone after winning the Limited Sportsman Division Championship at TSMP. In 2014 he finished 2nd in the division then shortly after parted ways with Banta Racing with Diego Monahan taking over the driving duties for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Banta stated on the reconnection of Kenneway “After he (Kenneway) left, Diego took over. After the 2015 season, Diego was taking on the work load of the Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen All American Series which he didn’t have time for the team after that….We tried to get Steve back during the summer of 2016, but he was also running his own races in his car.”

KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina (March 1, 2017)Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Jimmy John’s Ford Fusion for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), will attempt to add a second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win to his impressive resume at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday in the Folds of Honor 500.

Speedway, where he finished 14th. Two days later, Wednesday, Feb. 28, as the series headed west to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Harvick married his wife DeLana. The following Sunday, March 4, Harvick scored his first career Cup Series top-10 finish. Kumpen Finishes 22nd After Wild PowerShares QQQ 300 at Daytona

China Grove, N.C. (February 27, 2017) – Two-time NASCAR Whelen Euro Series Champion Anthony Kumpen had an impressive showing in his second career race at the Daytona International Speedway, battling for a top-10 finish in the closing laps of the NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener at the wheel of the No. 46 LeasePlan Chevrolet Camaro fielded by Precision Performance Motorsports. His run was unfortunately stopped 15 laps short by a multi-car incident, which the Belgian caught while running in the front pack. Front-end damage forced Kumpen to retire to the garage and finish the PowerShares QQQ 300 in the 22nd position.

In what was only Kumpen’s second-ever race on a 2.5-mile superspeedway, Kumpen proved how effective the NWES Road to Daytona program is in providing NASCAR Whelen Euro Series’ drivers with the best opportunities to race in NASCAR in the U.S. and all the tools to battle with the sport’s best drivers. Kumpen utilized this experience to avoid an onslaught of incidents and race solidly in the top-15 throughout much of the 300-lap event.

“It was great,” said Kumpen. “We survived the big one in the first stage and we kept a good pace, managing our car as planned for the rest of the race to be there at the end. We have been in the top-10 and we were working for the final dash to the checkered flag, but we got caught in that multi-car wreck. It is unfortunate, but it happens. It’s part of racing at Daytona and I am really happy because we did a great job and we had a blast! The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is doing something amazing with its program. It is the place to be to have chances like this and I can’t thank NASCAR, NWES, Whelen and all the partners enough for the Series and the program.”

Schuerenberg Escapes to Victory Lane in Winter Dirt Games VIII Finale

Ocala, Florida………A seventh-place starting position and a 360 degree spin at the midway point was not enough to deter Hunter Schuerenberg on the path to a “Winter Dirt Games VIII” victory Saturday night at Bubba Raceway Park.

The 27-year-old Sikeston, Missouri native steadily moved his way toward the front of the field throughout the 30-lap event before surging into the lead with seven laps remaining to collect his first USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victory in nearly three years since a 2014 victory in McCool Junction, Nebraska as well as his ninth career series triumph, joining Mario Andretti and Robbie Stanley for 47th on the all-time list.

At the drop of the green, though, outside front row starter Thomas Meseraull held the point, fending off a furious challenge from previous night’s winner Justin Grant and defending USAC Silver Crown titlist Chris Windom for the first pair of laps.

Mark Smith is Once Again The King of the 360’s

TAMPA, Fla. (February 25, 2017) For the second time, Pennsylvania’s Mark Smith ended his weekend at Tampa’s East Bay Raceway Park as the King of the 360’s with the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints.

While Smith gave chase early on, the race on the start saw outside pole starter, Shawn Donath, taking the early advantage over Travis Rilat. Slowed on Lap 3, Rilat was not to be counted out as the No. 29 stole the advantage by just over two tenths before the caution flew again.

Slowed again with five laps complete, Rilat had company on the restart as fourth starting, Mark Smith, began his run on the point. Giving chase and challenging until Lap 13, the following revolution saw the No. M1 advance into the top spot.

Lights, Camera & Plenty of Action for Coughlin in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Friday’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Daytona International Speedway (FL) was a wild one for all involved, but when the dust settled Cody Coughlin had passed more than a 100 trucks during the race and scored his best NASCAR finish to date.

Coughlin started the 100-lap race in the 17th position and finished 11th.  In Friday’s kickoff to the 2017 season at Daytona, the Ohio native had 113 quality passes, according to NASCAR statistical reports, which ranked second among all drivers.
The 21-year-old driver sustained minor nose damage in a 17-truck crash on the second lap of the race.  His ThorSport Racing team worked hard throughout the event to patch up the damage as best possible.

Grant the Top Gun on Night One of Winter Dirt Games VIII

Ocala, Florida………Justin Grant’s most recent visit to Bubba Raceway Park prior to Friday night’s USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship 2017 season-opener ended in heartbreak.

One year later, despite late-race contact that nearly spelled disaster for the Ione, California native, the 26-year-old Grant swiftly exorcised those demons to capture night one of “Winter Dirt Games VIII.”

Since joining forces last August, Grant and the Sam McGhee Motorsports team have been stellar in USAC competition. In a mere seven starts, the combo has already amassed five top-five finishes and their first two series victories together: last September’s “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora Speedway and now at the three-eighths-mile, D-shaped speedway in Ocala, Fla.

DIRTcar Nationals Night 11 Recap

Fog a First Time Winner at Volusia
BARBERVILLE, FL. – February 25, 2016 – The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series took the track at Volusia Speedway Park for the first time on night 11 of DIRTcar Nationals. During the 40-lap Craftsman Club Feature fans and drivers in attendance witnessed a thick fog roll in after 10pm that was the concoction of two days of heavy rain followed by a third of sunny blue skies. For the drivers’ safety, the feature was called complete with 23 laps in the books due to poor visibility.
Despite the bad luck Mother Nature brought, Shane Clanton was the class of the field all around. He had the fastest lap time during qualifying with 15.861-second lap, won his heat race and led all 23-laps of the feature.
“I hate that Mother Nature brought this fog in, but it’s pretty bad out there,” Clanton said. “Every straightaway you had to pull a tearoff because it’s like rain. I hate it for the fans. They didn’t get to see a full feature here. I think we had the best car tonight, so hopefully we can repeat tomorrow and do it all over.”

Terry McCarl Stands Tall On Night 2 of the King of the 360’s with the ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints

TAMPA, Fla. (February 24, 2017) The second night of competition at East Bay Raceway Park’s King of the 360’s and Ronald Laney Memorial ended with the defending champion in Victory Lane as Iowa’s Terry McCarl mastered the low line to claim the win with the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints.

Robbie Stillwaggon from the pole outdueled the No. 24 of Terry McCarl on the start. With the track locked to the bottom groove, the field was quick to find the tail with traffic coming into play on Lap 8.

Having fallen to third in the early laps, the race into traffic proved just what McCarl needed as Terry raced around the No. 53 of Shawn Donath on Lap 9. With Stillwaggon directly to his front wing, the No. 24 made quick work of Robbie to grab the lead on the tenth round.
With the track clearing as the field ran to Lap 15, McCarl held a half straightaway advantage over Shawn Donath who followed McCarl to second as he passed for the lead; but the field would again find Terry.

Phil Jacques Keeping Dream Alive at Thompson Speedway

The Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP) Limited Sportsman Division has a reputation for being one of the most competitive in New England. This makes the achievement of Phil Jacques, driver of the No. 77 entry, even more impressive.  Heading into Icebreaker 2016 he was focused on consistency; finishing every race and keeping the car in one piece.

It appeared at the beginning of the season this would be a tall task. Some minor set backs, including mechanical gremlins and a self-admitted rookie mistake relegated his No. 77 entry to a 17th place finish. Soon, though, through the determination of the driver and crew, success was had.

Jacques won his first race at TSMP on Wednesday June 1, following up with consistent finishes throughout the summer months. Describing this stretch, Jacques explained, “During summer months, we stayed in contention regularly, but a few mistakes on my part cost us better finishes than we probably could have had. Still we ended up with a 5th, 6th 6th and 5th in the next 4 races to follow.”

Garage Pass 2017 – Bruneau Motorsports

I didn’t have to go very far for this week’s garage pass; a driver from Tiverton, RI and your 2016 Street Stock Champion, Scott Bruneau. I grew up pretty much right down the street from the Bruneau’s garage and as a kid I remember it not being a garage at all, but more of a “tent city”; they have come a long way from back then and I was excited to be able to interview a driver from my hometown. Though Scott is a man of very few words, between himself and his crew chief Kyle Bowers I got to know how they operate and stay competitive from week to week.

How did you get your start in racing?
Scott: I started coming to the track as a kid in the 80s when my dad was racing and I have been here ever since.

What division do you currently compete in and how would you describe your 2016 season?
Scott is currently in the Sportsman (formerly Street Stock) division and will be back behind the wheel of his #74 this season.
Scott: Last season was real good and real fun. It was very successful and we had a great time being so competitive.

Is there anything new to the car for 2017?
Scott paused for a bit and really couldn’t think of anything other than the body they are still waiting to get for this season.
Kyle: Really the only thing we did do to the car for this season was a new inspection plug on the oil pan because we had to replace it. Other than that the car was so good that we had no reason to change anything else.

INDYCAR News and Notes – Feb. 23, 2017

1. Sports car star Taylor tests Pagenaud’s Indy car: As Indy car test sessions go, it was considered a thank you from a manufacturer. Judging from Ricky Taylor’s smile after climbing out of Simon Pagenaud’s car, he was quite welcome.

Taylor spent today testing the Team Penske No. 1 Chevrolet – the same car Pagenaud will drive in two weeks when the Verizon IndyCar Series season opens at St. Petersburg, Florida – around the Homestead-Miami Speedway road course in Homestead, Florida.

The test was considered a courtesy by Chevrolet and General Motors to Taylor for his seven wins in four years in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – most notably his victory last month in a Cadillac prototype with Jeff Gordon, Max Angelelli and brother Jordan Taylor in the Rolex 24 At Daytona endurance race.
