Todd Szegedy Ready to Battle for his 20th Career Win

Stafford Springs, CT — The NAPA Spring Sizzler® at Stafford Motor Speedway is the longest continuous run event on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour calendar.  While the Sizzler record books are filled with names like Christopher, Stefanik, Evans, and Troyer, one driver who quietly has amassed a sterling record in the Spring classic is 2003 NWMT Champion Todd Szegedy.  The Ridgefield native has 8 top-5 and 9 top-10 finishes in 15 career Sizzler® starts with a best finish of second, which he has achieved five different times (2003, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2016).  Szegedy is primed to go one spot better than his career best and take home his very first NAPA Spring Sizzler® trophy behind the wheel of the #85 Montanari Fuel / Stuart’s Auto Chevrolet co-owned by Bob Katon and Kevin Stuart.

“I always feel good about coming to Stafford,” said Szegedy.  “I have a lot of experience there and my crew chief Don [Barker] has a lot of knowledge for Stafford.  We know what we need to make the car go fast, the challenge will be being able to make that happen and making the right calls during the race.  Obviously, we want to win but we’ve got to start somewhere with good finishes.  It’s always a little disappointing when you don’t win and finish second.  I have 19 career wins and I’d really like to get to the milestone of 20 wins and what better place to do that than at Stafford?  The Sizzler is definitely on my bucket list for races that I’d like to win.  A Sizzler win would mean a lot to me but even more would be how happy it would make the team.  When you win, there’s no better feeling than seeing how happy the whole team is, it’s a very rewarding feeling.”

Nick Bendiak Ready to Live His Dream at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — When the green flag falls on the 2017 DARE Stock season at Stafford Motor Speedway, Hopkinton, MA native Nick Bendiak will be living out his dream.  Bendiak has been part of racing for the past 8 seasons helping his father Jim and brother Patrick and he has even made several starts himself behind the wheel.  But the 2017 season will mark his first full-time season behind the wheel of a race car and he is itching to get started.

“I’ve done three World Series races and two races at Stafford,” said Bendiak.  “We’ve been racing at Thompson for 8 years, my brother and father both drove 4 years each and now it’s my turn to be the driver.  We were never really competitive, we just raced for fun.  It was more of a thing being able to work with my Dad in the garage.  We finally have a real motor in the car from Don Wood at R.A.D. and he’s been a big help with us getting the right gearing and drivetrain.  We ran at Stafford a couple years ago when they were doing a test program and I love the track.  It’s a much more of a driver’s track instead of the car needing raw horsepower like at Thompson.”

Despite his lack of racing experience behind the wheel, Bendiak is itching to get his season started.  Bendiak is not focused on winning races or a championship, but rather he is looking to have fun working with his father and brother as well as seeing if he has what it takes to be successful behind the wheel.  With a BFR chassis and a R.A.D. Automachine engine, Bendiak has the equipment he feels he needs to be successful and his driving aptitude will determine how much success he enjoys this season.

Bourgeois Ready for Mini Stock Title Run

THOMPSON, CT – For nearly 25 years, Eric Bourgeois has been on the local motorsports scene. Beginning in 1994, behind the wheel of a go-kart, the veteran driver has recorded 20 wins and earned two titles at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, one in 2004 and the second nine years later in 2013. Bourgeois finished his 2016 season with a win at the Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing, and hopes to carry that momentum into his home track’s Icebreaker on April 7-9.

2016 “ was not one of the best years. We had motor problems, then got wrecked in the first race followed by getting wrecked in the practice of the second race. The only good thing about last year was winning the World Series, and placing 4th overall. Hopefully, that win can carry over into the 2017 season,” the driver of the No. 87 Mini Stock explained.

Bourgeois has worked all winter to get ready for the 2017 season, preparing two cars for the seven race championship campaign. “We are absolutely prepared for the Icebreaker. Both of the cars are ready to go. We just got the valves done in the primary car, also the backup car was finished last Thursday for the Test and Tune, which didn’t happen, but that’s alright.”

Ellwood Hopes to Sustain Momentum

Kyle Ellwood rallied from a cut tire on the first lap of the Performance Plus 150 to finish 15th. The inaugural NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Myrtle Beach (SC) Speedway was his third top 15 finish.

“It was a fun place to drive on and you really had to be able to figure out your limits there rather quick because if you didn’t you burned your car up,” Ellwood said. “So, it took a lot of thought. It wasn’t just to go out there and hammer down. So, my thoughts on the whole race was it was pretty good.”

The Riverhead, NY driver felt confident in his car even though he was off the lead lap. Seven cars were eliminated in a pair of late restarts.

“In the middle of the race, I picked off as many cars as I could. I damn near felt like we passed probably 20 cars out there. I seen a lot of cars but at the end, I just let ’em all have at it. I didn’t want to tear our car up since we want to have a good opportunity going into this Thompson show.”

2017 Everett’s Auto Parts Late Model Season Preview

Entering the 2017 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Everett’s Auto Parts Late Model season at Seekonk, everyone is trying to figure out the way they will beat two-time champion, Dylan Estrella. The North Attleboro, Mass. driver has captured the last two crowns in the division in convincing fashion. In 2015, Estrella did it while driving for Bill Bernard. In 2016, Estrella teamed up with Everett’s Auto Parts while driving for Bernard and picked up right where he left off, winning more times than you can count on one hand.

It’s going to be a difficult task for anyone that wants to take Estrella off the top, but there are a list of challengers that are going to give it their best shot.

Young driver Austin Blais had a successful season last year, finishing inside the top five in the championship standings. Blais captured a few victories in his No. 16 and showed once again that he is on the climb at the Action Track of the East. The former Street Stock winner has come into his own behind the wheel of his No. 16 and will have a brand new paint scheme on board going into this season.

Justin Grant On the Brink of History this Sunday at Terre Haute

Whether one uses the eye test, the victory lane photos or the point standings to determine how well Justin Grant’s 2017 season has begun, the fact of the matter is that his performance thus far has already rewritten the record books.

Simply put, Grant has gotten off to one of the finest starts any driver has had in the history of the United States Auto Club. So fine, in fact, that he became the first driver in the history of the venerable club to capture feature victories in both the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car and USAC National Midget season openers in the very same year.

Though he has already made his mark in 2017, on Sunday, April 2 at the Terre Haute Action Track in western Indiana, Grant could stand all alone as the only driver to win all three USAC National series season-openers in the same season.

Indefinite Suspension Issued to Jeff Oakley Following Dominion Post Race Disqualification

Mooresville, NC 3/30/17- An increase of penalties has been issued to the #11 Late Model Stock Car owned and driven by Jeff Oakley following post-race disqualification from the duel races held at Dominion Raceway on March 25th.

Upon engine testing at an independent engine dyno the series has implemented for technical use for the last three seasons; Jeff Oakley’s Chevrolet 604 crate engine, claimed by Oakley to be built by Kowalsky Racing Engines, dynode at 503 horsepower at 6600 RPM. These results were 73-77 horsepower more than any Chevrolet 604 engines the series has researched over the past two years at the same location. In addition, all research and data provided by industry and factory outlets also indicated transgressions in the results collected from Oakley’s engine test.

After the test driver and car owner Jeff Oakley made the decision to not let CARS Tour officials disassemble the engine to remove the suspected illegal parts. The decision by Oakley to keep his engine and not let CARS Tour officials recover suspected illegal parts, to ensure the parts don’t show up at another Late Model Stock Car event, regardless of the sanctioning body, will result in an indefinite suspension from CARS Tour competition as both an owner and driver.

Silver Crown Rookies Eager to Impress in Sunday’s Sumar Classic at Terre Haute

As a new season embarks, a new crop of rookies has emerged to take on the task of racing in the USAC Silver Crown Championship in 2017. In this Sunday’s season-opening “Sumar Classic” at Indiana’s Terre Haute Action Track, twelve rookies have entered to compete on the legendary half-mile dirt oval.

To be designated as a rookie in Silver Crown, a driver must not have competed in more than four main events in the series during their career.

Three drivers have full intentions of running the schedule of races on both the dirt and the pavement this year including five-time USAC/CRA AMSOIL Sprint Car champion Damion Gardner. Gardner, the most heralded of the 2017 Silver Crown rookie class, has been a mainstay in USAC’s national and western divisions for much of the past two decades, yet he has only competed in a single Silver Crown race: the 2008 “Copper on Dirt” at the defunct Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz. The Concord, Calif. native will compete for the Klatt Enterprises team with Bob East Dave Brzozowksi on the wrenches.

David Gravel Holds Off a Closing Rico Abreu and Promoter Brad Sweet to Claim World of Outlaws Victory at Placerville Speedway

PLACERVILLE, CA – March 29, 2017 – Taking the lead just after the halfway point in the feature, Watertown, Connecticut’s David Gravel hung tough through multiple restarts and eventually held off a fast moving Rico Abreu to pick up his second World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win of the season Wednesday night.
The victory at Brad Sweet’s Placerville Short Track Showdown was the first of Gravel’s career at the tight high-banked quarter-mile and came aboard the familiar CJB Motorsports/ Go Muddy No. 2 Sprinter. He now joins Donny Schatz as the second repeat winner with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in 2017.
Gravel had taken the lead at the original start of the 40-lap race, but a yellow flag before one lap could be completed made for a complete restart. On the ensuing green flag Bixby, Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart rocketed out to the top-spot. The driver of the Larson/Marks Racing No. 2 held command over the early stages and fended off Gravel as he looked for season win number one.

Tick Tock – Time for Coughlin to Race for a Grandfather Clock

DELAWARE, OH – After nearly a month off, Cody Coughlin is ready to get back behind the wheel; only this time he’ll be doing something he’s accustomed to, short-track racing. The short track ace will head to the famous paperclip of Martinsville Speedway in Virginia for the first time in his career on Saturday, April 1 in the Alpha Energy Solutions 250 for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

The 250-lap battle is Coughlin’s first short track event with the NCWTS and first since making history in 2016 by becoming the only driver to win two Champion Racing Association titles (ARCA/CRA Super Series and JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour) in one year.

Martinsville Speedway is very different from the fast, high-banked half-mile of Winchester Speedway (IN) where Coughlin clinched his historic feat. Martinsville is a flat half-mile with curbs on the inside of each corner, making the facility very treacherous.

Tony Stewart Racing: Donny Schatz World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series California Spring Tour Finale Advance

California Outlaw Swing: From Surviving It to Dominating It

INDIANAPOLIS (March 29, 2017) – One sign of a champion is the ability to transform a perceived weakness into a tangible strength. For most of his 20-plus seasons of competing in the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series, Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing’s (TSR) Donny Schatz has been classified as a slow starter because he didn’t typically begin piling up victories until late May. That changed two seasons ago when he and his TSR team flipped the script and turned the Outlaws’ annual California Spring Tour from simply being about survival to domination.

Since 2009, Schatz has competed regularly in California early each Outlaw campaign and, the first six of those seasons, he captured two wins in 30 starts. In 2015 and 2016, Schatz has won seven times in 19 starts and already has picked up one victory on California soil this season in three starts. This week, he’ll look to add to those numbers beginning with Wednesday’s Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts. The Kings Outlaw Shootout at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford Friday and the SoCal Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday evening caps this year’s six-race run through the Golden State.

Prior to the 2015 WoO campaign, one of the goals for TSR’s No. 15 team was to get better at the places it struggled. Getting through California each March seemed to be one of the tougher tasks of the season. The team went to work after winning the 2014 WoO championship and the results followed.

The “So Cal Showdown” has become one of the “must see” races on the AMSOIL USAC/CRA schedule. Featuring both non-winged and winged 410 cubic inch powered sprint cars, fans can enjoy both styles of racing at one of the finest dirt tracks in the country. “The Demon” Damion Gardner won the inaugural event on April 12, 2014, and Richard Vander Weerd dominated the following year. Last season, Josh Hodges claimed the checkered flags with a dramatic last corner pass over Gardner, Brody Roa, Vander Weerd, and R.J. Johnson. At press time, “The Demon” leads all drivers with 40 Perris USAC/CRA victories and Nic Faas set the 1-lap qualifying record of 15.833 on February 25, 2012. A complete series win list at Perris Auto Speedway is at the end of this release.

Entering the second point race, “The Demon” Damion Gardner (Concord, California) has a slim three-point lead over the competition. Piloting Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / Weld Racing Spike, Gardner qualified second overall, won his heat race, and finished second in the March 4th “Sokola Shootout” at Perris. “The Demon” has seventy USAC/CRA victories to his credit and will be looking to win his second “So Cal Showdown.”
