Balancing Act for Lutz

Ryan Lutz of Miller Place, NY plans to run 5 Legends Car races at Riverhead (NY) Raceway and defend his win from last year.

“(I am) incredibly thankful for the parents I have that let me pursue my dream I have in life,” Lutz said. “… My dad and Renee, they sacrifice a lot for me and let me do what I love and I cannot thank them enough.”

Lutz also thanked his brother Craig, Kyle Ellwood, 600 Racing, and engine builder Chad Honeycut.

Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway marks the 2,500th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race. Below are some stats from the first 2,499 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races.

  •         The first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race was held at Charlotte Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 19, 1949 – the race was won by Jim Roper (Lincoln)
  •         186 drivers have won a race
  •         The series has competed on 156 different tracks

Lake Ozark Speedway Returns to ASCS Warrior Lineup in 2017

TULSA, Okla. (March 1, 2017) Exciting news for race fans in Missouri broke earlier this year when it was announced that Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo. would resume operation in 2017. Dormant since 2012, the track will feature weekly racing as well as several special events, which includes four nights of competition with the Speedway Motors ASCS Warrior Region presented by Impact Signs, Awnings, and Wraps.

The first date for the ASCS Warriors at the Eldon, Mo. oval is June 24, which pairs with the series debut at Heartland Park Topeka the day before.

Joining the Red, White, and Blue Weekend, action returns on July 1 with Double X Speedway the following night. The final appearance of the season will be September 16, just ahead of the season finale at the Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway the following weekend.

Bacon, Grant, Courtney and Golobic Among First to File Entries for Shamrock Classic

Du Quoin, Illinois………Some of the biggest names in midget racing have begun to file their entries for the second running of the “Shamrock Classic” Saturday, March 18 at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin. The $3900-to-win USAC Midget National Championship season opener brings the series indoors to showcase the intense open wheel action on the 1/6-mile indoor dirt track that has routinely provided some of the most memorable races each season.

The two most recent USAC Midget winners at the Southern Illinois Center have signed on to compete for the Clauson/Marshall Racing team at Du Quoin. Fremont, California’s Shane Golobic will attempt to defend his “Shamrock Classic” victory in the CMR/Matt Wood Racing No. 17w. Indianapolis, Indiana’s Tyler Courtney, a Southern Illinois Center winner in last December’s “Junior Knepper 55,” will pilot the CMR No. 7BC. Filling out the CMR stable is current USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car point leader Justin Grant who won last Friday’s Sprint season opener in Ocala, Florida. The Ione, California native won his first ever start in the CMR No. 39BC in a Chili Bowl preliminary night feature in January.

In addition, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon is back in the saddle of the FMR No. 76m for the 2017 USAC season. The two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ, won last season’s “Jason Leffler Memorial” in Wayne City, Ill. and finished third in series points.

Haas F1 Team had a methodical day of testing Wednesday with Romain Grosjean at the wheel of its VF-17 at Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya. The 30-year-old Frenchman collected 56 laps around the 4.655-kilometer (2.892-mile), 16-turn layout as he went through various systems checks in the morning and an array of setup configurations in the afternoon.

Grosjean’s quickest time was a 1:22.118, earned on his 49th lap while riding on a set of Pirelli P Zero Red supersoft tires. It placed him eighth among the 13 drivers taking to the track. Grosjean tallied 260.68 kilometers (161.979 miles) in his first day of testing. Teammate Kevin Magnussen drove the VF-17 Monday and Tuesday.

KYLE BUSCH ‘Crisper’ Memories at Atlanta

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina (March 1, 2017) – In his 10th season with Toyota flagship Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 SNICKERS® Crisper Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend, the place where the winning began in 2008 with JGR, Mars Inc. and its SNICKERS® brand, and Toyota.

Back in 2008, his first year with JGR, Busch headed to Atlanta for the fourth Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race of the season aiming to bring home his first win for the team’s two new partners – Mars Chocolate North America and Toyota.

After leading a race-high 173 laps, the Las Vegas native captured his first win for the SNICKERS® brand and also the first win in NASCAR’s top series for Toyota, which was in its second year of Cup Series competition and its first year with JGR.

Coughlin Ready to Stay “Hot” in “Hot-Lanta”

DELAWARE, OHIO – Cody Coughlin is already off to a strong start in 2017, scoring a career-best finish in last weekend’s race at Daytona International Speedway (FL) to open this season’s campaign. Now Ohio native is off to Atlanta to take on the ultra-fast 1.5-mile D-shaped oval of Atlanta Motor Speedway in Georgia for the first time in his budding career. Coughlin will drive the No. 13 Toyota Tundra for ThorSport Racing in Saturday’s (March 4) Active Pest Control 200 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

The 21-year-old driver has raced on multiple intermediate tracks prior to this weekend, but this will be his first race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Coughlin, however, does have some prior experience at “Hot-Lanta.” He participated in a rookie driver test session last season.

“Even though it was a over a year ago, I think that test session will definitely help me this weekend,” Coughlin said. “I have some knowledge to lean on heading into this weekend, and that is always good. Anytime you can be on a track for a substantial amount of time before you race is always a big help.”

Competitive Porsche Field Highlights Adelaide Opener

Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Returns for 13th Season

A tremendous line-up of sports car racers will highlight this year’s Porsche Carrera Cup Australia presented by TAG Heuer championship as the one-make series returns to Adelaide this weekend to commence its 13th season ‘down under’.

With series champion Matt Campbell stepping up to Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, many of the championship’s best performing racers from 2016 have returned with the goal of adding their name to the Carrera Cup honour roll.

Alex Davison, who was runner-up to Campbell in 2016, lines up as the only former series champion – winning the title in 2004 – while former race winners David Wall and Nick McBride return having placed third and fourth, respectively, last season.

McBride also enters the opening event as the defending round winner, while Michael Almond returns having claimed his maiden Carrera Cup win on home turf in Adelaide last season.

Kiwi Ace Makes Carrera Cup Return

Heimgartner to Contest Porsche Series After Supercars Stint

Five seasons ago, a teenage Andre Heimgartner was barely old enough to steer a road car when he became the youngest ever driver to compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship.

This weekend, the now-21-year-old returns to the Porsche championship with more experience and greater expectations as he lines up in the 2015 title winning 911 GT3 Cup car.

Heimgartner entered the 2012 Carrera Cup season aged just 16 years and 8 months, becoming the youngest driver to race in the championship – eclipsing the previous record set by Jonathon Webb, who was 19 years and 4 months for his 2003 debut.

Heimgartner made immediate impact, placing fourth in his debut race in Adelaide and ultimately finished the season seventh outright. The New Zealander was also the Carrera Cup Australia representative at the Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme shootout Vallelunga, Italy, later in the season.
