Decker Scores Third-Straight Highbank Hold-Up Win at Fulton

Sheppard earns runner-up spot after starting 11th

FULTON, NY – April 29, 2017 – Billy Decker raced from the sixth-starting position to take the lead from outside polesitter Brett Hearn on lap 46 and held off a surging Matt Sheppard to claim his third straight Highbank Holdup 100 victory with the Super DIRTcar Series at FultonSpeedway on Saturday night.
After taking the lead, Decker battled through lapped traffic to build a lead over Hearn. He then had to contend with Sheppard, who rallied from the 11th starting spot to take the runner-up position on lap 56. Decker defended against the reigning champion’s efforts, particularly over the final 10 laps, to secure his first Series win since last year’s edition of the event on April 30, 2016.
“It was tough sledding,” Decker said of the battles throughout the race. “I think if you were rolling you could go pretty good. Matt (Sheppard) came a long way and there was a lot of dicing. I could really carry some speed through the center of the turn and I think that’s what did it.”

Santos Savors Victory in Silver Crown Return to Phoenix

Phoenix, Arizona………It had been eight years since the United States Auto Club competed at Phoenix Raceway. Since then, the track has been slightly reconfigured, repaved and renovated.

On Saturday, to Bobby Santos, it was still the same Phoenix Raceway he knew and loved back in 2009 when he raced to a USAC National Midget victory at the one-mile tri-oval.

In his return, Santos used his experience and bravado to outduel David Byrne in a wild west shootout, racing past Byrne using a massive run off turn four, then fending off his comeback attempt off turn two a lap later to capture his seventh career USAC Silver Crown presented by TRAXXAS victory at the “Phoenix Copper Cup.”

300-Lap Score at Beech Ridge is Second Straight PASS Super Late Model Win for Reid Lanpher

Scarborough, Maine – Reid Lanpher of Manchester backed up a career-first Pro All Stars Series victory the previous week at Oxford Plains Speedway with a dominant performance in Saturday’s 300-lap PASS National Championship Series Super Late Model race at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine.

Lanpher was chased across the finish line by the reigning Pro Series champion at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Curtis Gerry of Waterboro, who passed a fleet of racecars after a spin relegated him to the back of the pack midway through the marathon. Derek Ramstrom of West Boylston, Massachusetts claimed third-place honors, in front of Belfast racer Travis Benjamin and Turner’s Glen Luce.

Lanpher, a former NASCAR Pro Series track champion at Beech Ridge, started the race from 11th position and patiently worked his way into contention, occasionally challenging three-time 2016 PASS Super Late Model winner Garrett Hall of Scarborough, who led the first 109 laps before Lanpher made his move to the front during an extended green flag run that went well past the halfway point when a caution flag sent just about the entire field to pit road for tires.

F2000: Palacio Scores First Win on Last Lap

Video Recap:

Alton, VA – Nicolas Palacio started on pole but only led a single lap, leading across the finish line to score his first career F2000 Championship Series victory in the season-opener at VIR. Palacio lost the lead on the start from pole to Reece Everard, who gapped the field but had mechanical problems on the last lap coming out of the last turn, with Palacio charging to the victory by just two tenths of a second.

“I didn’t know what to think,” said Palacio. “He pulled away and did a good job. I was driving with a flat-spotted left front with a bad vibration the entire race. We managed to hang in there and I was trying to hang on to second. I saw Reece slowing on the last lap and I kept my foot in it.”

Palacio gets a chance for a sweep on Sunday at VIR, as he starts on pole again.

Atlantic: Last Lap Move Gives Portante VIR Win

Alton, VA – Peter Portante passed David Grant on the outside down the backstretch at VIR on the last lap for the win in round two of the 2017 Atlantic Championship Series season. It marks Portante’s first Atlantic win in his second start for K-Hill Motorsports in an action-packed race. David Grant finished second and Saturday winner Keith Grant completed the podium as the three leaders diced for the race win.

Portante started second and fell back to third in the only going, only to mount an assault, moving past Keith Grant and then passing David Grant for the lead on lap 10.

He led a few laps before David got past again.

Atlantic: Keith Grant Wins with Third to First Move on Restart

Video Recap:

Alton, VA – Keith Grant won the season-opening Atlantic Championship Series race on a wild restart with four laps to go at VIRginia International Raceway on a hot Saturday afternoon. Grant was sitting third in his No. 40 Polestar Swift 016, and when David Grant and Peter Portante went wide while battling for the lead in turn one on a restart, Keith Grant dove inside taking first place and the win at VIR. Portante finished second with David Grant in third.

For Keith Grant, it was an anonymous race until late in the going. He started second and ran second for most of the 22-lap race, eventually getting passed by a charging Portante. However, a full course caution packed the field and changed everything, giving the 2015 Champion the first win of 2017.

“I was definitely in the right place at the right time today,” said Keith Grant. “David had me before the caution came out. I was fortunate for the caution to come out and have both of them go for it in one.”

Thrash Digs Deep for Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprint Triumph

LOXLEY, Ala. (April 28, 2017) Some attrition and a few well-placed cautions, along with an impressive last lap pass, resulted in Timmy Thrash parking his Best Western No. 09 in Victory Lane for the first time against the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints at Alabama’s Deep South Speedway this past Friday night.

Topping the first of a two-night affair at the four-tenths-mile oval, the Gulfport, Miss. shoe is the 18th different winner with the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints.

Working through early race cautions, Trash’s run to the front looked to have stalled out in the runner-up position as the No. 4m of Michael Miller held a sizable advantage. Entering the closing laps, however, traffic would prove the defending series champion’s nemesis as Miller’s run was blocked with three laps to go. It was just what the 18th starting Thrash needed to grab the win as the pair battled on the final circuit.

Castroneves Keeps Phoenix Speed King Crown with Record Qualifying Run

AVONDALE, Arizona (Friday, April 28, 2017) – There’s a new speed king at Phoenix Raceway, but it’s the same old speed king who keeps climbing the Indy car record books.

Helio Castroneves shattered the lap record he set a year ago on the 1.022-mile oval in tonight’s qualifying for the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix. It earned the 41-year-old Castroneves his second pole position in four races this season and the 49th of his 20-year Indy car career – tying the Team Penske driver with another legend, Bobby Unser, for third on the all-time list.

Driving the No. 3 REV Group Team Penske Chevrolet in windy conditions under the lights, Castroneves averaged 194.905 mph (37.7538 seconds) for his two laps, including a record-setting circuit of 18.8701 seconds (194.975 mph). Castroneves will lead the 21-car field to the green flag in Saturday’s 250-lap race (9 p.m. ET, NBCSN and Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network).

Todd Root Wins Sportsman Series Opener with Perfect Night at Fulton

DIRTcar Sportsman Series Central Region Continues April 30 at Utica-Rome

FULTON, NY – April 28, 2017 – Todd Root took the lead from Mike Phelps on lap 15 and paced the remaining 25 laps without difficulty to cap a perfect night at Fulton Speedway’s Highbank Holdup 40 on Friday night. The race was the season opener for the DIRTcar Sportsman Series Central Region.

Root earned the fastest time overall in time trials of the 52 cars in attendance before winning his heat race and then the 40-lap main event on a slick, but smooth Fulton track.

“This is what I was looking for,” Root said in Victory Lane. “We’re going to travel the series this year and I was looking for a really strong run right out of the gate. You don’t get much stronger than this.”

‘What They’re Saying’ from Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix Qualifying

HELIO CASTRONEVES (No. 3 REV Group Team Penske Chevrolet): “People don’t realize that qualifying is extremely difficult. I took it to the limit – I had one eye closed and one eye open. Experience is a big part of this and today was real, really good. The conditions were really difficult today in practice – the gusting winds were horrendous. We worked mostly on the race setup (in practice). My engineer did a phenomenal job and obviously everybody at Team Penske – the REV Group car was really fast. Qualifying is one thing – the race is another – but I’m really confident going into tomorrow.”

CONOR DALY (No. 4 ABC Supply AJ Foyt Chevrolet): “We were pretty stuck – we had way too much downforce. It was very comfortable-still had too much understeer. But it was just too much downforce-I was flat as soon as I got into Turn 1. It was easy-too easy. It’s a shame.”

JAMES HINCHCLIFFE (No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda): “A pretty solid run for us, based on how practice was, especially after the conditions, so we weren’t sure what to expect. Big credit to the Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports guys – we’ve been rolling off the truck with a good car all year. For us, we had a little too much understeer on that run; we were flat both laps, pretty secure. I tried adjusting the car a little bit, but 20-second laps around here, you don’t have a whole lot of time to make a difference in cockpit control. We’ll see where that stacks us up, and if it brings us a top 10 (starting position), that puts us in a decent place.”
