As I said last week, we are all familiar with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. We know what is right and want to do the right thing, but there is still that voice in there that tells us we can do what we want. Let’s continue as we close out our discussion of the internal struggle that challenges each one of us. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Have you ever tried to stretch your car to the end of the race? Avoiding the pit stop and hoping you had enough to make it. Sometimes we don’t make it. Sometimes we fall short of the finish line. We need to take the proper steps to finish the race in such a way as to win.

As we talked last week we discussed the internal struggle and the spiritual birth that needs to take place in each one of us. We continue that discussion this week. Let take a look at how should make the right adjustment in our lives.

For some, we think we can just forgo the decision and not participate in this spiritual birth. We think we can just do our best and try to be good people and that will be good enough. It won’t, if we do not accept Christ, we are destined to destruction. Our sinful nature will lead us down a road that makes life meaningless. We will wake up one morning and regret the path we took and wonder if there is still a way out. Our only hope comes from accepting Christ and winning the battle.

The writer if Romans encourages us;

Romans 6:12-14, (New Living Translation); Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.

Living without the anxiety of looking over your shoulder is a wonderful blessing. Getting there takes some practice. We have to replace all those desires that are in us with the character of God. The Holy Spirit that dwells in our heart will help us learn what decision is right. Paul compiled a list in Galatians for us to compare the two natures so that we can understand to difference.

Galatians 5:16-22 (New Living Translation) So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

We need to change the direction our lives are going. If we stay on the path of self fulfillment, satisfying our selfish desires, we will find out sooner or later we missed the boat. We will find ourselves living a life without meaning or substance. We will find ourselves lost; looking for the turn we missed, wanting to move our lives in a different direction. As long as you are here there is still hope. Hope that comes in the form a Savior, Jesus Christ. Take time to consider how many times you have to look over your shoulder and see who is coming up behind you, wondering if you treated them right. Accept the hope that Jesus offers and start your life down the road that leads to security, satisfaction, fulfillment and life.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

MAD DOG FILLS THE HOUSE- After a 17 year hiatus the Whelen Modified Tour returned to Monadnock. The fans didn’t forget and made the night a success by filling the seats. Whelen Engineering also took the opportunity to say thank you to their New Hampshire Employees some 250 guests enjoyed the nights racing action. Our thanks go out to Phil and the entire Whelen crew for outfitting the RWJM pace car with the safety lighting necessary to pace the field. Because of their provision we were called into duty as the primary pace car. It was an experience Dan and I will not soon forget; thanks.

Qualifying saw Erick Rudolph win his first pole. He picked the right race to do as there was no redraw and his qualifying effort allowed him to lead the field to green. He was able to maintain his good performance and brought the car home second behind race winner TC.

Ronnie Silk had the run of the night starting in 16th and finishing on the podium in third. He passed thirteen cars as he worked to bring the high groove into play.

All in all it was a good day. We were able to renew relationships with the folks at Monadnock and catch up on a few things. We want to thank them for their hospitality. I think they do a wonderful job of making people feel welcome. Take in a race there some Saturday night.

OPS RUNS LATE- This week I (Scott) traveled a lot further north to Oxford plains speedway in Oxford, Maine with the Modified Racing Series. Once again there was a strong contingent of Modified’s making the trip. For me I was excited about going to this track for the first time. I heard greats like Bobby Allison talk about how they got there start in the early days by racing at this track and I must say it was worth the trip.

Probably the only issue of the night was the 10:36 green flag which was caused by some added races from a Wednesday rained out show. Once the MRS went green no one was disappointed. Oxford is so wide that the cars were three wide many times during the night and it took 73 laps before anyone saw a caution. At the end of the night Southern Modified Tour regular Andy Suess took down an exciting win for his first MRS win of the season. Louie Mechalides finished second and Todd Annarummo finished 3rd.

The MRS will be traveling to Canaan, NH this week and I encourage everyone to get out and support this touring division. You will see some real special racing and will not be disappointed.

NEMA REMEMBERS SHANE- This Saturday night we will be with NEMA at Waterford Speedbowl for the running of the First Annual Shane Hammond Memorial. We will be on hand to help the NEMA family honor one of their own and to help the racing community remember the inspiration they received from Shane and the life he lived. There are still lap sponsorships available, check out the website, nemaracing.com.

We all have seen the cartoon with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. I am sure we have all at one time or another been confused about which one to follow. We know what is right and want to do the right thing, but there is still that voice in there that tells us we can do what we want. The internal struggle that challenges each one of us. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It is no secret that many think the rules exist in racing as guidelines. Nothing is wrong until you get caught. Many have said, “It isn’t cheating if you don’t get caught.” Well that’s not true. As much as we would like to get away with something so that we have an advantage over others we still have our own conscience to deal with. We may try to rationalize it away but the fact remains, we know what we have done.

One of the byproducts of acting that way is a lack of peace in our lives. We can never relax, and live. We always have to concern ourselves with getting caught. We are always on the lookout for those who are watching us. We live our life looking over our shoulder to see who is looking.

Our life in Christ should be one where we don’t have to keep looking behind us to see if someone saw us do something wrong. We should be confident that our motive for everything we do is done with integrity and honesty. Everything we do should be done in a way that would please God.

I must confess, there are some areas of my life that need some work. When I receive an email and it starts out saying that they saw the pace car somewhere I immediately think about how I was driving and whether I was polite and gracious. There are many times I would like to get even with a driver who drove in a way that offended me or put me in danger, but I must remember that getting even isn’t a fruit of the Spirit, self control is.

We have these two natures in us. The second one appears when we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior. The first is there, in us since the fall of Adam. We are predisposed to be selfish and we try to manipulate every situation to our advantage. We want to satisfy ourselves without any thought of what is best for those around us. You can see it even in young children; we have to teach them to share, tell the truth and be nice to others.

When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus in John’s Gospel, he talked about being born again, a spiritual birth. We all have a physical birth, but this spiritual birth is when we acknowledge the fact that we are sinners and ask God to forgive our sins and accept the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. We invite the Holy Spirit into our lives to guide and direct us in the ways of God.

John 3:1-19; (New Living Translation) There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

Jesus replied,“I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Jesus replied,“I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

“How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.

Jesus replied,“You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man has come down from heaven. And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”

This conversation is the basis of how we understand the new life we have in Christ. It also helps us to understand the battle that rages in us between good and evil. If we have accepted Christ there are two natures, our old one of sin and our new one of the Spirit. As I spoke last week about the how God prunes us and shapes us into the person he created us to be, this process plays out in our lives as a struggle between what we were and what we are in Christ.

We’ll talk a little more about that next week, for now let me ask you, are you complete? Have you had both a physical birth and a spiritual birth? If you have, you know the internal struggle we face. We’ll deal more with that next time. If you haven’t there is no time like the present to ask God for forgiveness. We are always available to help you with that decision, call on us and we can help.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

MRS VISITS LEE SPEEDWAY- Rev. Scott was with the MRS at Lee and filed this report.

This Friday night I made the hike up to Lee Speedway in New Hampshire for another Modified Racing Series event. It has been great traveling with this series this year and they have put on some great racing. It was great to see another solid turn out of 32 cars for this event. When you get this many cars going for 24 starting spots you know you are going to get some exciting qualify and that we did.

The 100 lap Feature was full of excitement and we saw some cars continously come through the pack to the front. For the second week in a row the series had a very long green run to the finish. Last years MRS Champion Jon Mckennedy took over from Dwight Jarvis with 27 to go and never looked back. Whelen Modified tour regulars Andy Suess and Rowan Pennink fought through the pack over and over to capture top 5 finishes.

On a disapointing note Chris Pastreryak suffered a broken wrist, we are praying for a quick recovery.

Next week we will be headed way up north to Oxford Plains.

THINGS HAPPENING AT RIVERHEAD- Pastor Scott, our chaplain at Riverhead shared these thoughts with us about how things are going this season.

I’m glad I stayed on this year. This season has been the turning point. It all turned around when a track official got hit by an out of control car during a race. I went to visit him at the Hospital, prayed with him and gave him a Bible and Tract. That changed everything it seemed. Guys are coming up and asking me to pray for their pit crews, their drivers. We are praying together. Guys are asking for Bibles, stickers and the driver’s prayer. People are actually hanging out with us and we are getting close.

Now they are coming up to me for things. Last Saturday night a guy came up and said; “Can I have a Bible and thanks for praying for me last year. Things have really turned around in my life.” Had one guy win the Charger series after he put a sticker on his car; he is sure that’s why he one and pulled up to me after the race and reached out for a hug. I didn’t have the heart to tell him, it wasn’t the sticker, anyway he was very excited.

My other son is working with us now too. We also got a big sponsor for our Comet to take care of all the gas costs for the year in exchange for signs on the car. Our car was also in the largest paper on Long Island a few months ago. Check out the article on our web page under Racing with Jesus ministry. www.centereachbiblechurch.net. Now if I can only get someone to buy me a new set of rear tires. The fans wait each Saturday for the burn out show. Pastor Scott

If you can help Pastor Scott out with a new set of rear tires for his Comet it would be a blessing. As some of you may know, his burn out every week on the front stretch has become a fan favorite. Drop me a line if you can help and we’ll work on getting him some new rubber.

I stayed pretty close to home this weekend taking in the show at Thompson and Stafford. We’ll be back on the road next week as the Whelen Modified Tour make it first visit to Monadnock Speedway in several years. It will be good to see how some of the younger guns handle this classic bull ring. Make your plans to join us.

I came back from New Hampshire and our tomato plants have grown at least another foot. Unfortunately those pesky weeds grew also. The weeds needed to be removed so that the tomatoes could grow even larger and the plants would bear more fruit. We face the same thing in our lives, as we grow in Christ there are some things we need to remove before we can grow even closer to him and bear more fruit. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

One day I was talking to Billy the Kid about engine building, not because I wanted to build one, but I wanted some understanding about the process. Before I came to RWJM I worked in manufacturing, I made things work, so I have always been intrigued about engine building. Billy and I talked about a spec engine or “recipe” engine. If I understand it correctly there is a list of parts you can use and from those parts you build an engine.

To some it sounds easy but Billy explained that picking the right size parts to go together can make all the difference in the world. Some of the parts, although the same, don’t match up right and wouldn’t work well together. You have to keep the right ones and discard the ones that don’t. When you put the right ones together you produce more horsepower and isn’t that what it is all about.

Now that I think about it, that must be why some chocolate chip cookies taste better than others. The ingredients are pretty basic, but some cooks just know how to put the ingredients together in such a way as to make them irresistible. I must confess though, there aren’t too many chocolate chip cookies I don’t like, but I digress. (Awesome commercial)

Our lives are a lot like tending a garden, building a motor or even making chocolate chip cookies, some things are desirable and some things don’t belong. Only the right combination of things produces the desired effect. We can only live a life that honors God when we remove the things that drain our resources and fertilize the things that grow us into the people we need to be. Jesus talked about it in John’s Gospel.

John 15:1-8; “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Gardening is a constant process of pruning, cutting out things that are not useful, so that the things that are useful can grow and flourish. It seems counter productive but if you let something grow without some pruning it gets unruly and out of control. It really parallels our lives, if we live without someone pruning us and shaping the decisions we make, our lives would become chaotic and unproductive. We would destroy ourselves. No one can live a long and productive life without some pruning.

Keep in mind though, once something is cut from the main plant it looses its source of living power and withers and dies. We need to stay connected to the source of life, true life, Jesus Christ. He provides the life we need and apart form Him we can do nothing, nothing worth doing that is. All we become if we are not connected to God through Jesus is deadwood.

To lead productive lives that honor God a few things have to take place; first we need to be connected to the Father through Jesus. Jesus is the vine that brings to us the essential elements for life. We need to accept Christ and allow him to provide for us the very source of life. He will lead us to the Father.

Second, we must allow God to prune, mold and shape us into the person He created us to be. Let’s face it that is not a comfortable process, cutting things off, changing things, thinking differently, but it is a process that is necessary if we are going to live an abundant life. Some of the things we think and do are not beneficial to us, they just don’t belong. God will remove those and help us to grow in the right direction.

“A lady studied the art of bonkei: she learned how to place curiously shaped rocks and bonsai plants on a tray spread with sand to create a miniature landscape. But … the final secret eluded her: no matter what she did, her sand never held together in the perfect waves and ripples of the master’s precisely arranged grains. Finally, after many years …she was told the answer. She bowed at the feet of the master, and he spoke. ‘Use glue,’ he said”

Jesus is the glue that holds our life together, he keeps us connected to God. Without that connection we will wither and die. God is the master gardener that shapes our lives into the life He created us to live. God uses the Holy Spirit to communicate to us the things that have to removed, adjusted and encouraged for our lives to honor Him. Remember that passage from last week?

1Corinthians 10:23 “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is constructive.

We sometimes think we can handle it when, in fact, we shouldn’t even try. We need to turn our life over to God and let him prune and shape us into what He created us to be. We need to stay connected to Jesus, without that connection we will wither and die. We need to call on the name of Jesus and seek God while He can still be found.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

BEAUTIFUL WEATHER FOR RACING- This weekend had to be one of the best stretches of weather I can remember over a holiday weekend of racing. >From Thursday night at Thompson to Saturday night at Monadnock the weather was the star of the show! Also there was some pretty good racing along the way. Mike Stefanik found victory lane Thursday night at Thompson in the Tour Type Mod open show.

NEMA also raced at Thompson that night and Randy Cabral won a thriller, coming from behind to chase down Russ Stoehr only to have to hold him off at the line but less than a car length. By the time you read this they will have another event under their belt with a Tuesday night race at Stafford.

TC showed us another one of his moves as he made another last lap pass for the victory in the Sunoco Mod feature. He has dominated the division at Thompson but he has had to earn every victory.

Before we leave the action at Thompson I might add that across the board the car counts are off from where I am used to seeing them. The pits looked a little empty when I arrived. The economic system is taking a toll on racing. Let’s hope for some encouraging indications soon.

Off to Lime rock for the historic first running of the Whelen Modified Tour at the picturesque road course with no easy way to get to. It really isn’t that bad of a ride when the weather was as beautiful as it was last weekend.

I did things a little differently on this trip to Lime Rock, I was offered a golf cart and took advantage of it. I felt so much better after two days there then if I had to walk around the facility. I actually visited parts of the track that I had never been before. It was good to see the entire layout up close and personal. Thanks to Dan, the golf cart guy, for making the offer and flagging me down to remind me. My feet thank you and I know of two photographers who are thankful also.

The hard work award goes out to the #2 team. They had to change engines and missed all but a few laps of practice. They then went out and qualified on the pole and came home second. Congratulations goes out to every member of that crew.

First place for the second race in a row went to a non-regular driver. In a deal worked out over the last few weeks, Dale Quarterly, road race ace, drove for Wayne Darling. Wayne only instruction, “bring it home in one piece.” Dale did that and also brought it home in first place! I think Wayne is still smiling!

In the K&N portion of the show the road race ace from north of the border put it on the pole and in the number one spot on the podium. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds though. Andrew Ranger had his work cut out for him as he had to battle his way back to the lead after relinquishing it. He showed his experience as he drove his way to victory lane.

The question did come up as I talked with Andrew before the race, “How come no Canadian National Anthem?” I guess the folks at Lime rock didn’t know they had an international field. Being fair we would have had to have several national anthems as this field included drivers from at least five different countries. Let’s just leave it with one anthem.

The MRS made a visit to Mad Dog Saturday night and the car count wasn’t a problem. I am told they sent home over ten cars. They also put on a great show slowed only by a few cautions. Scott said it was a great show with Kirk Alexander taking home the honors.

To close out the weekend I headed to Maine for a little sailing with my wife. Scott Martin will be at Stafford for the Extreme Tuesday show and we will be back in time to head to Thompson on Thursday. I hope your Forth of July holiday was a safe and happy one. Remember to get out there and support some local racing. There is nothing like being there.

Freedom is a funny thing, each one of us wants it but we are not sure what it is. We want to be able to do anything we want, whenever we want, but we still need something to hold our lives together. What is holding your life together? Are you truly free? Greetings in the name of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.

In racing having the freedom to race wherever and whenever we want is the great ideal. The fact of the matter is we need a little help. If we run down the list it starts with a car, we first have to have a car to race and unless you have your own machine and body shop, someone has to make the parts and someone has to build the car.

Let’s say we get that far, now we need a place to race. We know they won’t let us do it on the street. I know some of us have tried along with everyone else who built a racecar, but the fact is they are not going to let thirty or forty of us go out and race around the block for 100 laps on Saturday night. What does it take for someone to provide a place for us to race? It takes more than we consider sometimes; facility, personnel, insurance, permits, safety workers.

Now we have a car and a track but we need a reason to race, in comes the promoter. Someone has to create enough interest in our race for people to want to see it. The reason being, without the promotion there wouldn’t be any incentive, money, to race for. We would get pretty tired of racing just for fun.

We also need rules, who is going to decide what is good and what it bad. In comes the Sanctioning body, someone who assumes responsibility for making the rules, making sure the cars conform and are safe, enforcing the rules, and that the race is run fairly

I am sure I overlooked some things, but as you can see none of us are truly free to race where and when we want. Our ability to race is dependent on someone else providing the opportunity. There needs to be some give and take to continue to make the opportunity to race available for the future. I think we lose sight of what it takes to be able to race. We need to see the big picture and learn how to make it all work. Everything depends on all things being in place.

This also has something to do with life, we are not independent, we are interdependent. Just like we need all the necessary elements to come together to race we need the same things to come together for us to truly live. Christ is like a sanctioning body and covered the risk of living for us. He provided the way for us to have a relationship with God. Listen to what he says in John 14:1-6;

John 14:1-6, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Jesus is the way we get to God. He provides that for us. Without His provision we would not have any hope. We have the freedom to choose His provision. When we do, we receive a special gift, the forgiveness of our sins. He erases the penalty for us making the wrong choice. He covers it.

Jesus said in John 10:10 that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come so that you might have life and have it abundantly.

What that tells us is that if we choose to live our own way and not accept the provision that Christ made for us then we are bound by the one who steals, kills and destroys. The choice is ours.

The forgiveness that Christ offers comes without a performance requirement, it is available to anyone, no matter what they have done. We soon learn though, that what pleases us changes when we accept Christ’s offer. We find ourselves being satisfied by things other than we thought. We start to see the true meaning of life and how to live it. That is because Christ provided us with additional help in learning to live, The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to see things correctly. Listen to what Paul said about this Freedom;

1Corinthians 10:23-24, 31-33, “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God– even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

Paul helps us to understand that we are free to do anything, but not everything is beneficial to our lives. We need to be motivated to help others before we help ourselves. Basically we are free to do for others and God will take care of us. Our lives are full when we serve others without regard for what is in it for us.

That concept is strange to us, most times we spend our life trying to look out for number one, us. We will not be truly free until we change that perspective. We will not experience the freedom that Christ offers until we trust in Him and let the Holy Spirit guide our actions. When that happens we are free, free from paying the price for our mistakes. As Jesus said in John’s Gospel, trust in God, trust also in me.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

NHMS WEEKEND- It was good to get back to the big track, I think most would say this is where they want to perform well. Maybe it is the size, maybe it is the large number of fans, but for whatever reason this is the place everyone wants to come to race.

Dan and I were joined by Scott and Ricky this weekend along with our West Coast Coordinator, Gary Dionne. It is always good to have some dedicated folks to help spread out the work, thanks guys for making the weekend a success.

It never ceases to amaze me how God works things out for His glory. If you missed our two chapel services, you missed a blessing. On both days we were blessed with having a performing artist come in and provide music at Chapel.

On Friday Gary met the young lady who was singing the national anthem, they talked a bit and Gary shared about our chapel service. Turns out she is a Christian and asked if she could sing at chapel for us. She did and it was tremendous.

I wondered what we would do for the modified chapel on Saturday. No need to wonder, God had a plan and it was good. When I walked into the garage to make sure everything was ready there was a performer there setting up his keyboard. He was there for the Nationwide Chapel service but would love to sing for ours also if we would like him to. Again it was a tremendous blessing that God provided for us.

Sometimes you just have to honor God by going and He provides the blessings you need to be encouraged. Thanks go out to Tom and Carol Clifford for letting us stay with them. They are truly a blessing to this ministry.

On Saturday we did have an injury that required a visit to the Hospital; one driver was transported for observation. He is fine, just needs some time to heal. It was good to spend some time with his wife and parents and be able to comfort them as they waited for the test results. God places us where we need to be.

LIME ROCK PARK DOUBLE HEADER- This week we travel to Lime Rock Park with both series on the schedule, two weekends in a row and two divisions at each, this could be habit forming. I haven’t had the chance to see the Modifies race the road course and I am looking forward to it. It will be interesting. Make plans to kick off your Forth of July Weekend by seeing what should be a memorable event; hope to see you there.

I was reading a story the other day that reminded me of Hank Parker Jr. and the testimony he gave at an event I attended. It made me ask myself if I make decisions based on what honors God. What do we consider when we make life changing decisions? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As I read some of Hanks story it made me think about where I would draw the line. I hope that I could have the faith that he demonstrated when he had a decision to make. It is important the foundation we build our life on.

Hank Parker Jr. is not a household name because of what he was taught at home. His Father instilled in him Christian values that would serve him well when he to make a difficult choice. His biography helps us understand how he honored God.

The Parkers are big on family, always have been. When Hank Jr. began racing in the Busch Series, he did so in a car fielded by his father. The team did the best it could through the 2000 season, and after that, Parker turned to a team co-owned by Frank Cicci and Scott Welliver. It was with them that he scored his two career victories, one each in 2001 and 2002.

Parker appeared headed for even bigger things. He made the lone Cup start of his career for Ray Evernham late in 2002, completing 389 of 393 laps at Rockingham and finishing 33rd. After that, he went to work on putting the final touches on the deal that would’ve put him in a Roush Racing Ford for the 2003 season.

Parker was testing a car that would have been his car at Daytona when word came down that the sponsor was going elsewhere. You see Hank had mad it clear that he would not drive a car with a certain sponsor on the hood, and they decided to go elsewhere. There were no other sponsors available and Parker was out, almost for good.

He drove just six Busch Series races in 2003, three of them in a Dale Earnhardt Inc. mount for his good friend Dale Jr. While Parker scored four top-10 finishes in those half-dozen races, he has just one other start in the series, at Nashville for Roush in a fill-in deal for Edwards.

While turning down a certain chance at stardom on the Cup series might have deflated a lesser person, Parker was confident that moving away from racing was God’s plan for his life.

“Seeing how God is in control has been amazing,” Parker said. “There came a point in time in my career where I really just laid down my career and my life, and gave my life to Christ. God has changed so many things and my perspective on things.”

“I’m good … I’m content,” Parker said. “I actually had a phone call the other day to see if I’d come back, and I felt really good about saying no. … It was time to bow out. I feel like I gave it a good shot. I feel like I gave it my best. A lot about racing is timing. Obviously, there’s people that were better than I was, but I feel like I did the best that I could.”

He decided to honor God in his decisions and let his life be led by the values that he learned from his father.

I am reminded of the nation of Israel and their journey in the Promised Land. The people that inherited the land had their faults but they were better than their fathers. That didn’t remain the case as we find out when we read in Jeremiah 7:26; (Amplified Bible), Yet the people would not listen to and obey Me or bend their ears [to Me], but stiffened their necks and behaved worse than their fathers.

If we stay the same and do not learn, we move away from God.

A father out for a walk with his son, met and old friend he had not seen for years.

“Fine boy you have,” said the friend. “I hope he grows up to be as good a man as his dad.”

On the surface the compliment should encourage, but the father knew that his son needed to be more than that.

The father answered, “I would be ashamed of him if he does not become a much better man that his dad.”

Therein lies the secret, we need to spur our children on to a greater and deeper respect for God than we have. We need to help them understand the challenges we faced and help them learn from them.

The boy was amazed at his father’s choice of words, he look up to his dad and thought he was the best man on earth. Then he began to realize the lessons he learned from his father. Many were because his father had experienced difficulties, made wrong choices. From those lessons his father showed him the right way to go.

He taught his son how to lead his life, because of the mistakes he made and the lessons he learned. He taught his son that he wasn’t the authority, he too answered to his Father in Heaven. He taught his son that in all things we need to prepare and run in such a way as to win. Each generation can improve on the succeeding one when they are taught to look to God and honor Him.

We should make every effort to honor God in the decisions we make. We should be ready to draw the line when we are asked to compromise our beliefs. We should teach our children that some things are not worth compromising our faith over. Make every effort to honor God in everything you do.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

GETTING A LITTLE DIRTY- I am learning after my trip to Syracuse, on my trip to Grandview I wore light colored pants and light colored shoes, but I still have some lessons to learn about watching racing at a dirt track.

The thinks I learned at Grandview;

It matters where you stand or sit

It matters which way the wind blows

Your shirt will be a different color at the end of the night

Be careful crossing the track, it is difficult coming down the banking after they just watered

Wear eye protection

I hung out in the infield with Lenny, figuring he would know the best place to stand. I guess the wind supersedes the location and we were covered early. The wind changed for the feature and I received an up close view of the Big Blocks slashing and sliding. I am amazed that they can maneuver and change position so easily; it was a thrill to watch.

TC AND THE KID- We were back at Thompson for Thursday night as the MRS was in town but the Sunoco Mods stole the show. TC and Kid Roc again wagged a tremendous, lead exchanging battle if their 40 lap feature. Right now the two of them are putting on some of the most exciting racing you will find. After a 15 lead change battle the previous Friday night at Stafford they continued to swap places like a game of musical chairs (sorry, you can thank Matt B. for that one). If you have the chance, get out there and watch them run.

HINCKLEY BENEFITS IN MRS FEATURE- Les Hinckley was in the right place at the right time. When Stefanik and Pennink touched on a late race restart Les moved to the front of the class. He was able to hold the lead and become the first repeat winner on MRS this year holding off TC who came home second.

At the driver’s meeting Rev. Scott was officially introduced to the drivers and teams as their RWJM Chaplain. He was received with open arms and many stopped by with encouraging words and expressions of thanks for his presence. Rev. Scott will be the primary chaplain for the series with support coming from the rest of our group. We are thankful for the opportunity to serve them.

NHMS IS THE PLACE- this week most of our focus heads to NHMS as we go the Magic Mile for the first of two shows in support if the Cup guys. It is a lot of ground to cover but I think we are up for it. Not sure if I will make it back for the open tour show at Thompson on Thursday night but we’ll see.

Looking ahead a little we have a double header next weekend also on a road course. Dan and I will be headed to Lime Rock Park to see the WMT and K&N guys in action. Hope to see you there.

I wanted to pass along this note I received this week and ask for your help. Sue Santerre’s Uncle Jim passed away last week from complications of lung cancer. We met Jim at various family and race functions through the years. You would remember him for his wide smile. He and his wife were very supportive of Andy and Sue Santerre’s racing endeavors and attended many races with her folks.

Sue shared this about her uncle; Uncle Jim was a quiet, unassuming man who typically stayed in the background and observed as he didn’t want to be in anyone’s way. He loved racing and meeting all of you more than words can say, even a five minute conversation was cherished because you took the time. He was so proud to have been a part of the race team no matter how small.

Sue thought it would be a great tribute to Uncle Jim if each of us who met him through the years sent a card to his wife Joanne. Maybe mention racing in a note so she knows who you are and how you knew Uncle Jim. I think it would bring her comfort and mean a lot to her at this terrible time. He leaves behind his wife, Joanne, Son, Brian (Barb), Daughter, Beth (Tim) and grandkids, Meyghan, Mayre and Austin. Cards can be sent to; Joanne Newcomb, P. O. Box 37, Wayland, Ohio 44285. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers

As I prepared my sermon for Father’s Day I reflected on some of the lessons I learned at my Father’s knee. I wondered how many of us know what we know because our father put it there? What did you learn from your Father? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

My dad taught me to drive at an early age. I think the first time he let me move the truck I could barely reach the pedals. Granted I didn’t start it, but I did press in the clutch and let it roll a few yards.

I remember sitting in his lap with my hands on the wheel. It was a blue Ford Galaxy we had named Ole Betsy. I would steer from one side of the road to the other, he would correct it just as I was getting to the edge.

My father taught me to give an honest days work. He taught me to be honest and fair. Those lessons I can only appreciate now, later in life, when I see how much good character means.

I have my father to thank for that. My dad didn’t live too long, he passed when I was fifteen, but during the time we had together he taught me a tremendous amount about life and how to live it. I think every parent only wants that opportunity, the opportunity to teach their children the lessons that they learned; the opportunity to teach their children what and how this life should be lived.

I was rereading a story told by Geoff Bodine in the March 2003 issue of Guideposts. He talked about the family feud that went public after that faithful day in Indy when he and Brett exchanged love taps in turn three and four. Geoff recounted how he shot his mouth off and exposed a family matter for the whole world to see.

He remembered what his dad had taught him and wondered what his father would make of the whole thing. He behaved in a way that went against everything his father had taught him. “I couldn’t imagine how deeply our fighting must have hurt Dad.”

Geoff continued, “I grew up on my grandfather’s farm in Chemung, NY. Grandpa worked the dairy part. Dad and I worked the chicken farm. Side-by-side with dad, I learned what it meant to be a caring, decent Christian man. He was always giving, whether it was a meal, a job or money. People in church and the community counted on him. I can’t remember him ever once saying anything bad about anyone. Especially family.”

Geoff shared how something continued to nag at him, despite all his success he had forsaken the lessons he learned from his father. His dad loved his wife, loved his children and most of all loved living a life that pleased God. Geoff remembers praying, “Please Lord, teach me how to make you more a part of my life. Like dad.”

In the end God would come to Geoff’s aid, as he tumbled in a horrific crash at Daytona, God came to him and spared his life. “It wasn’t luck or safety restraints that saved me, it was a miracle. I am here to tell them I’m alive only by the grace and power of God. I’m sure Dad would be proud.”

That regret we feel when we let our parents down is a difficult one to deal with. The forgiveness our parents show us is a tremendous gift. As we reflect on what we have learned from our fathers think about what our Father in Heaven has to teach us. Think about the valuable lessons we can learn at the feet of God.

We had some technical difficulty last week and the column never made it to the AARN offices. It is floating around out there somewhere in cyberspace. If you find it let me know. If you would like to read it you can drop me a note and I’ll let you know where to find it. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Well, you might imagine how disappointed I was when the column didn’t make it into the paper. I know there are so many folks that read it there every week. But I guess it is like not qualifying for the A main, it didn’t get there on time.

I didn’t have much time to dwell on that this week as it was a short week for me; with the holiday on Monday and heading to Martinsville on Friday, I had other things to get done. I did feel though that I some how let God down.

He let me know that I didn’t and He had plans for me and this ministry. Sometimes we forget that God always has opportunities for us. Even in my time of disappointment God was making plans to encourage me.

I remember the Scripture; Joshua 1:5, No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

As we drove to Martinsville things started to happen. At a rest stop a man approached me and introduced himself as a Christian Business owner and wanted to know about our ministry and how we were funded. I talked with him a while and gave him some information. I left that rest stop encouraged.

A short time later my phone rang. I didn’t recognize the number but answered the call. The lady on the other end introduced herself and told me she had been following me for the last half hour. I must admit my thoughts went immediately to my driving and wondered if I did something wrong.

She called because she wanted to talk about how the country singer she sings backup for could get involved with ministering to the racing community. She explained that she called her sister with the website that is on the trunk, her sister looked it up and relayed the number to her and she called me. Just as I picked up the phone I noticed another rest stop just two miles ahead of us. We pulled in and talked. Again I left another rest stop encouraged.

When we arrived in Martinsville I checked my email and someone had commented through our website. The first words again made me wonder if I did something wrong, “ I saw your car on I-81 in PA…” The rest of the message set my mind at ease and again I was encouraged. It went something like this; my husband, an atheist, spotted your car and pointed it out to me. I am his wife and have been praying for his salvation. Thanks for planting the seed.

You see even when you think you really screw up something God is right there to encourage you to keep going. I know it is important to have the column in the paper each week. God showed me this week everything we do is important. He prepared a way for me even though I was thinking about something else entirely.

I want to encourage you this week to remember everything we do is being observed by someone. Make every effort to honor God in what you say and do.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

THIS JUST IN- ME- After a long day of Yellow Flags in both the WMT and K&N races we were able to get on the road home. I’ll share some thoughts with you next week but I did want to recognize some guys who took advantage of their opportunities. On the Whelen Modified side, Justin Bonsignore finished second in the biggest race of his young career and another young gun, Richie Pallai finished ninth. Both were thrilled to make it through the challenging 200+ laps.

On the K&N side, Brett Moffitt made the most of the last restart to wrestle the lead from Ryan Truex, who had fought from the rear of the field to the front. With one circuit complete the yellow flew and then the rain fell. The race was called and Brett took home his third series win.

After a short pitstop to cut the grass and water the plants it was off to Maine to spend some time with my wife on our 30th wedding anniversary. I was able to get there before the day was over and we enjoyed dinner with her folks.

This week found us headed back to Thompson for a second try at running the first Tour Type Mod 40 lap Feature, but just received word of a postponement until June 24th as next week they have the Modified Racing Series visiting. Tonight we are heading out to Stafford for the 37th Annual Coors Light SK Modified® 100. We have some potential help making a visit with us, pray that God would lead them in their decision to come on board. Saturday looks like a return trip to Seekonk for the MRS race, I haven’t been there since the last time the WMT ran there. I am sure the place hasn’t changed much.

*********************************************************************

IMHO (In My Humble Opinion), some thoughts from Rev. Bill

-I agree with Monte Dutton…David Pearson belongs in the Hall of Fame.

-Bedford’s World of Outlaws Late model show was rained out so we will never know for sure if J.R. and the track crew got the surface right for the show. After the Lucas Race, J.R. was determined to never have that kind of surface again and the crew worked hard to make it so. I think that the promoters at Bedford are willing to listen to all and will do whatever it takes to make the races enjoyable for all. Just my “humble opinion.”

-Bedford’s rainout gave me the opportunity to attend the drag races at Pittsburgh Raceway Park for the first of their 4days of racing Memorial Day weekend. They had two wheelstanders there along with fireworks. The show ended around one in the morning. But Mark Romeo, a member of our congregation won the $1000.00 to win “No Box” event. Yes my friends, $1000.00 to win! The purse increases each day.

-Although if I have my preferences, I would rather be at a circle track race, drag racing has some advantages. First it was only $10 to get in and it gives you access to pits, and the stands. You can actually get up close and “personal to what is going on. Second you can race anything and everything with the dial ins so anyone can realize their dream of being a racer. One striking difference is in the diversity of the racers. Young and old, men and women, boys and girls, black and white compete, are spectators, and work at the drag races. Not so much in the circle track arenas.

-Speaking of diversity…A recent on line article pointed out that in this year’s Indy 500, 4 women competed along with drivers from around the world. It looks like the IRL is doing something right.

-Still no Ed Lynch Sprint victory at Lernerville. Although being at Knoxville made it hard for him to win at Lernerville this week!

-While at PRP, I got to chat with racing photographer Bill Truby. He has been at PRP as their official photographer for a few years now and states he doesn’t miss the politics of the circle tracks.

-Even though she didn’t have a chance to win, I was pulling for Sarah Fisher to do well. I watched her race at Challenger in a sprint car and think she has some real talent. By the time you read this, we will know how she did. I doubt that unless she spun out or God forbid, wrecks, she will hardly get mentioned in the race.

-Please keep sprint car driver, Charlie Holben in your prayers. He was burned in a crash at Lernerville.

-Went to Lincoln Speedway for my first visit. The Wednesday night show featured USAC wingless sprints and the ARDC wingless midgets. Nice track and a great show.

-I hope the plans for a purpose built F1 track in Texas come through. If they are the best drivers in the world with the most technologically advanced cars in the world, they should race at least once a year in America.

-I was disappointed in ABC’s coverage at the end of the Indy 500. Couldn’t they have paid more attention to Mike Conroy to make sure he was OK?

-Maybe someday I will be pulling for Chase Elliott like I pulled for his dad, Awesome Bill.

-Come on rain; leave us alone on racing nights.

-I so want to see Ford turn their season around. This is getting embarrassing for us “Blue Oval” fans.

-Bedford just finished their last race and the rains came. Great timing by a hustling track crew to get the races in.

-I was disappointed by the Hobby Stock “fans” that cheered when a certain driver’s name was announced as being in a scary crash in the feature. At least they could have waited until we knew he was okay.

Memorial Day, the start of the summer season; like the swallows returning to Capistrano the snow birds return to the lake. We celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer with wall to wall racing. How did you begin your summer season? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As we begin the summer racing season I thought we might take a look at one of the other things summer is noted for, rest and relaxation. I know some of us think racing is our form of recreation but the track really isn’t the place to relax and unwind. I think we all need a time and place to just get away.

When we need to get away we head to Maine, the way life should be, and go sailing. Where do you go? If a plan doesn’t come to mind then maybe it is time to find one, get away and relax.

God understands our need for relaxation, he commanded it. He even set an example for us in the creation of the World. Scripture tells us that God created the World in six days and on the seventh he rested. If God saw the need for rest then it is a requirement not an option.

God even invites us to join Him and promises to give us rest;

Matthew 11:28-30; “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We need to incorporate rest into our summer schedule. Don’t put it off until the off-season; there won’t be time then either. Make time now to get away from it all.

As we close out our series on the words of Christ from the cross I wanted to note a few parallels, seven statements, seven days in creation. Also note on the seventh day it was time to stop and rest. Christ finished his work and then went home to be with God. His last statement from the cross can be summed up like this, Dad, I’m coming home.

Luke 23:44-46, It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Jesus finished what he came to Earth to do and now was the time to return home. He was placed in a grave for three days and on the third day rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He had provided a means for the people of the world to save themselves.

This past week I did the funeral service for my wife’s cousin Kathy, she was 47 and left a husband and two boys. It had been a 16 year struggle for her and now it was time for some rest. I read the familiar passage of Psalm 23. In that passage we find words of comfort about how God desires a relationship with us and the benefits of a relationship with God. Meditate on the words and take the time we need to stop and smell the roses.

Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, n I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

In the next few weeks I want to share some things about our relationships and how we build them. For now I want you to take some time away from things and relax, let God give you rest and restore your soul.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

WAITING WITH ANTICIPATION- It took a while but the shootout that ensued in the closing laps of the 20th ANNUAL TSI HARLEY-DAVIDSON 125 at Stafford proved to be classic. I talked with Grandpa Blewett after the race and he was amazed at the two moves his grandson put on Bobby Santos. Bobby was also amazed and said so in his Victory Lane comments. Bobby and Jimmy were the show Friday night and kicked off the Memorial Day Weekend with the type of racing we have come to expect from Modifieds.

Let the record show that they raced hard and clean during the several attempts at a green, white checker and it proved to be the most exciting racing you will ever see. It was even more exciting than edge of your seat, you had to stand up to take this one all in.

RIVERHEAD’S STEWARD IN NEED OF PRAYER- Mike Cappiello, Riverhead Raceway’s Co-Chief Steward is recovery from injuries sustained after being hit by a modified on May 23. Mike has two broken legs, a separated shoulder, a broken rib, broken spine and other related injuries. Mike has had at least two surgeries and more are planned. He is being treated at University Hospital in Stony Brook. Please pray for his recovery.

LITTLE 500 REPORT FROM ANDERSON- The World’s Fastest Quarter Mile proved again to be the racetrack to be at in Indiana for Memorial Day weekend. The Little 500 is as much about history, and reminiscing with friends as it is about starting 33 sprint cars on the asphalt. This year marked the 62nd annual running of this storied race. It’s been a long week, and the track crews in particular are ready for some needed rest. Small World: I ran into an AARN reader from NC who recognized the uniform and thanked RWJM for the weekly column – a must read for many across the country.

I also met and talked with a local youth minister and explained that we are always seeking more representatives of Christ at the races. Recall I asked for prayer for baby Jacey, who was facing some serious tests at Riley Children’s Hospital. Those tests came out fine and they are just waiting some biopsy results. Continue to pray for this little

girl.

Got to meet Bobby Vickers and share some stories about early Iowa Speedway. He is the driving force behind raceweld.com and works with the USAR Hooters Pro-Cup Tour and is a USAR official. The Pro-Cup Tour opened Iowa and he recalls that first day with no ATM’s, No concessions – they have come a long way. Also got to talk with Butch Wilkerson – a longtime Little 500 racer from the 70’s. Butch has the distinction of having actually completing 500 laps in 1972 first, but due to a scoring error was awarded second. He co-led our invocation last year, and also shared some kind words about the Hall of Fame inductees this year. Butch has turned over 3,000 laps in the little 500, from 1967 to 1979.

RWJM Chaplain and founder of Families Forever Ministries, Dennis Coppock found his team had more work than expected this week. In addition to sponsoring Friday’s Families Forever Race Night, he was asked to staff the clothing concessions for the week. He got to see some of the race, and led the invocation at the 500, but put in a lot of time behind to table too. But that is certainly a good way to meet most everyone who comes through the gate, too.

The race was the cleanest and fastest I have seen, with nearly 80 laps laid down before the first caution period. One of the top finishers commented that there were a lot of good cars here this year – that led to tight, clean racing. Eric Gordon, with 19 starts, and 8 wins at the 500 added a ninth to his stats. He held off Shane Cottle and Tony Hunt and was nearly a lap up on the field at the checkers. Congratulation to all who saw the checkered flag wave – that is a victory in this grueling race.

HEADED SOUTH FOR A DOUBLE HEADER- This week finds Scott and I headed to Martinsville for a much anticipated double header. The Whelen Modified Tour will be joined by the K&N Pro Series East for a two day show at the famed southern Virginia half-mile.

We have some work to do before we go though. Thompson kicks off their first Tour-Type Modified Open Show on Thursday night. I have talked with a few drivers about it and there is some anticipations leading up to this 40 Lap shootout. No time trials, the field will be set by heat races and consi’s. It will be interesting to see what type of support they receive.

Have you ever been thirsty? Really thirsty? Sometimes we use the expression “dying of thirst” without realizing that you really can die from thirst. When you want to drink and never be thirsty again, drink the living water that comes from Christ. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The challenges from the heat of summer take their toll on our bodies. If we don’t hydrate ourselves it can be fatal. I have seen many collapse under the heat and need medical attention. In fact at this year’s Sizzler two people required treatment for dehydration. We need water to live. We also need living water, water that gives eternal life.

As we continue our look at the words of Christ from the cross this week we finally see the human side of Christ. He took care of others and their needs, He took the weight of the world on his shoulders and now he had time for his own needs.

We see the humanness of Christ as he hung on the cross, for three hours that Friday afternoon the sky was dark, the sin of the world was placed squarely on the shoulders of our Lord and Savior. He endured the challenge and as the end neared He cried out, exclaiming His thirst.

John 19:28-30a- Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

Jesus completed His task and it took everything He had. He was drained, His body near death, it was as if every ounce of fluid had been squeezed from Him. He had given everything He had for you and me. Now He had a thirst that only God could fill.

Psalm 42:1-2

As the deer pants for streams of water,

so my soul pants for you, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When can I go and meet with God?

We updated our Racer’s Bible again and its theme is Living Water, for those who thirst. >From the introduction it is written; “We are all created with a deep thirst for God in our hearts, an empty longing that only God can satisfy. We try to quench that thirst with so many things- significance, success, comfort, peace, wisdom. But all these things, however good, cannot meet our deepest needs. We often go to these wells and fountains, hoping for refreshment, but we come away with a thirst even greater than before.”

I am reminded of the woman at the well and what Jesus said to her; John 4:13-14 – Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

We can be filled with the water of life, a fountain, overflowing in us that sustains us, fulfills us, satisfies our every need. We need only to respond the same way the woman did. John 4:15 – The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

“The invitation has never been withdrawn. Jesus, God’s Word in Human flesh, calls us to come to him. We meet him and find living water in the pages of God’s Word. There he will meet our deepest needs. Whether you thirst for the presence of God himself or for peace, love , hope and truth – the Bible will answer your need.”

We invite you to thirst for the presence of God in your life. We invite you to drink for the well of living water and never be thirsty again. We invite you to know the presence of God through Jesus Christ in your life. Turn to him, the provider of living water.

As I mentioned we do have new Racer’s Bibles available for a ten dollar donation to Racing with Jesus Ministries. In this New Testament you will find helps for daily challenges and also guidance as you walk with God. If you would like a copy please let us know. We will also have it available on the “show your faith” page of our website, www.rwjm.com, soon. Thank you for your support.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

LET’S GO BOWLING! I know the sign up date has passed but the more the merrier. If you find yourself down in the Taunton area Saturday afternoon, stop by and let them know you support their efforts as SHANE BOWL II gets underway on Saturday, May 22 at AMF Taunton Lanes, 555 Winthrop Street, Taunton, MA 02780.

Bowling was Shane’s off season sport of choice besides watching racing and football. This charity event is all in the name of Fun for Safety. The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation has been established to provide safety education & equipment to drivers old & new.

Folks, this is a worthwhile cause that reaches out to help drivers be safe, let them know how much that means, thanks.

WEDDING BELLS- Let me date myself, “Goin’ to the chapel and gonna get married, goin’ to the chapel of love.” Now I was only four when The Dixie Cups made that that their biggest hit ever. Just thought we should take a little stroll down memory lane as we prepare for some wedding vows this week. Alex Ramirez, crew member for Keith Rocco and Sarah Mansfield will tie the knot this Saturday in Foxboro. I am looking forward to doing the honors.

Foxboro isn’t that far from Taunton, do you think I can bowl in formal attire? No, I think I’ll stick to one event on Saturday.

ENCOURAGEMENT NEEDED- From time to time we have some folks that need the support and prayers of the racing family. I wanted to get some of these out to you so that you could lift them up.

Bo Gunning- Bo had an episode with his heart this last Friday at Stafford, I am told he will be fine.

Ken Spring- As you know Ken’s mom has been quite ill and needs more of his attention. Pray that Ken has the wisdom to make the correct decisions for the best way to care for his mom.

This one comes out of our Northwest office, thanks to James and Katie;

Devin Werner- has recently began to address some personal challenges in his life and taken steps to move his life in a different direction, pray that he would have the strength and courage to see the process through.

This one comes to us from Wall Stadium Chaplain Bob Menschner, thanks for your dedicated service Bob;

Billy Wiechert- Billy, driver of the # 11 modified and former Truck Champion at Wall Stadium, will be out of action for a few weeks after receiving medical treatment for a recent heart condition. Cards of encouragement can be sent to him c/o Chatham Main Contractors, 143 Main Street, Chatham NJ 07928.

IMHO (in My Humble Opinion), some thought from Rev. Bill;

-When I got home from Blairsville Speedway on Sunday, Dawn looked at me and asked “Where have you been?” When I told here only at Blairsville she just looked and asked “What took so long?” It was a long, cold day at the kart track. First race of the season, rookies at first race, and not enough help, added to the time taken to complete the event. On the upside, lots of new competitive karts were there and all the kids means a future for our sport. I know the Millers will continue to do what it takes to make it better in the weeks to come.

-Bedford cancelled early so recent grad Krissy and I headed out to Motordrome. A shower just as we were about to take the exit off of 70 almost put a kibosh on our evening. But the cars took to the track to dry it off and the full program was run. I like the asphalt Modifieds. There was enough variety in the body styles to make it interesting. I enjoy the speed of the late models but without paint and decals, they all look the same. Mark Cottone and Neil Brown were the class of the field with Brown taking the win. I wonder just how much a late race caution affected the outcome. Interesting response to the opportunity to thank his sponsors by Brown: “I don’t have any sponsors!” It is something when one of the best drivers in a class has no sponsors for his team. The economy is still not responding well around the Western PA area. I personally am not a fan of the 4 cylinder class but you have to admit, it is the class that is growing. The front stretch wall finally kept Kristin Etling from winning heat races.

-Here we are entering into the last half of May and Ed Lynch has yet to win a feature at Lernerville.

-There must be more money in selling photos than I thought…Howie Ballis, track photographer from Motordrome, has two race cars he owns at Motordrome. They both are sharp looking cars. I think he will have to sell a few more photos this week to fix the modified!

This week has Thompson opening up for weekly racing. Scott and I will be up there on Thursday, headed to Albany/ Saratoga on Friday for the MRS and then I am off to Foxboro on Saturday for the wedding. Rev. Dan will be headed to Iowa for the East meets West K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway. He will be joined by our West Coast Coordinator, Gary Dionne and Mid-West Coordinator, Chuck McNeil. Keep our travel in your prayers.

The time has come; the weight of the world is on your shoulders. You bear the guilt of every bad decision ever made. How do you deal with the grief? How do you deal with the pain? You cry out to the one true God, the only one who can help. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Have you ever felt the weight of the world on your shoulders? Have you ever had to deal with the pressure? Lets face it racing is important in many of our lives, but it should not be the most important thing. Many of the decisions we make at the track or in the shop can spell success or failure in the race. But for most of us there will be another day, there will be another race.

Many times we think it is the end of the world when things do not go as planned. Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously. We think the world revolves around us. We need to stop and look around a little, relax and realize that some things are not the end of the world.

Some things however are more significant that others. A good friend of mine gave me some advice to follow; if it is going to matter in 300 years, worry about it, otherwise let it go. Good advice for those of us who have a perfectionist mentality. What Jesus did on the cross still matters over 2,000 years later.

As we continue our study of final words we find the moment of truth, the challenge of carrying the sin of the world on your shoulders, we find Jesus crying out to God. Jesus reveals His human side as the weight of the world was placed on his shoulders by God. But Jesus knew who to turn to when the burden was to heavy to bear.

Mark 15:33-34, At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”–which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Matthew 27:45-46, From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”–which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

For three hours on that Friday afternoon the sky was dark, the guilt of our sin was placed on the shoulders of our Lord and Savior. He suffered the punishment on our behalf. I am reminded of the song “Amazing Love, You are my King” Read the words of the chorus; Amazing love, how could it be that you my king would die for me?

Do you know what a great gift it is to be forgiven, to have someone pay the price for your mistakes? It is the ultimate gift. God provided that gift for us that day on the cross through His son Jesus Christ. Listen as Peter helps us understand the gift and the reason for it.

1 Peter 2:21-25 (New Living Translation); For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.

Christ turned to God as we should when the world over whelms us, we should put our life in God’s hands and let Him guide us to what is right. Christ again shows us an example of how we need to respond when we face difficulty. Turn to God and leave things with Him. Christ put his life in His father’s hands that day and that allowed Him the strength to finish the job.

In whose hands have we placed our lives?

A basketball in my hands is worth about $19. A basketball in Michael Jordan’s hands is worth about $33 million. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A baseball in my hands is worth about $6. A baseball in John Lackey’s hands is worth $16.5 million. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A tennis racket is useless in my hands. A tennis racket in Pete Sampras’ hands is a Wimbledon Championship. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A rod in my hands will keep away a wild animal. A rod in Moses’ hands will part the mighty sea. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A sling shot in my hands is a kid’s toy. A sling shot in David’s hand is a mighty weapon. It depends whose hands it’s in.

Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches. Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in God’s hands will feed thousands. It depends whose hands it’s in.

Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse. Nails in Jesus Christ’s hands will produce salvation for the entire world. It depends whose hands it’s in.

As you see it depends whose hands it’s in. So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your families and your relationships in God’s hands because He is faithful and will save you.

Place your life in the hands of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

CHECKING IN FROM AROUND THE RACING WORLD- Stafford Motor Speedway had their Late Model 100 this past Friday and Woody Pitkat bested the field to post the prestigious win. Being a former champion he knows how to get around the half-mile but with the recent Richard Petty Driving Audition winner on his tail, Dillon Moltz, I am sure he needed every thing he learned to secure the victory. With the victory Woody put car owner Billy Snow in Victory Lane for the first time ever. Congratulations to the entire 88 team.

The events of Friday started out with the remembrance of Dare Stock Driver Bob Thompson who recently passed away after a battle with cancer. Please keep the entire Thompson Family in your thoughts and prayers especially his wife Rosemary (Harris) Thompson, and daughter, Heather.

MID-WEST REPORT FROM ANDERSON-2010 has started off with some cool weather. This week’s CRA Street Stock feature felt more like the New Years Bash weather of the past. So much for global warming…

The cool temps brought a fast track, with two track records being set in qualifying; both in front wheel drive, and street stock. Congratulations to owner/driver Rich Boyer and the #33 team for taking the 75 lap victory.(and last week’s Anderson Street Stock win, too) Also, good run by 2009’s rookie of the year Josh Poore finishing 5th in this sanctioned event.

A few folks need our prayer, too. Little Jacey is facing some tests at Riley Children’s Hospital, and she (and Mom and Dad) need your prayers for that, Also, push-truck driver Gene Howard underwent triple bypass surgery this past week and came through very well and is recovering at home. We pray for a speedy recovery.

And I am thankful to our Lord too, since the old Taurus was only a few miles away from a serious problem. The rear coil spring had broken and was rubbing on the back of the sidewall of the rear and while I put up with the bad ride for a couple of months, I didn’t know why. I didn’t know the tire had a quarter inch groove being rubbed in it. I was protected for a couple of thousand miles…

2 Samuel 22:3 (New Living Translation)

My God is my rock, in whom I find protection.

He is my shield, the power that saves me,

and my place of safety.

He is my refuge, my savior,

the one who saves me from violence.

IMHO (In My Humble Opinion), some thoughts from Rev. Bill;

-Cory Stivason, the soon to be Penn State graduate, has a really cool contest on the DirtFix.com website. Photographers are invited to send in pictures from this past weekend and the winners will get free T-shirts.

-Western PA lost a racing legend this week with the passing of Herb Scott. No one who watched him compete will forget his domination of the late model ranks in days past. I had the privilege of watching him race and then years later, talking to him in the booth at Challenger. What a great racer and man. Sympathies to his family especially his wife of 60 years, Pat.

-I was standing in line at the bank wearing my Challenger raceway shirt and another patron asked me where Challenger was. It was sad to say that the track has been closed for over two years. What a great track and the place where Donna & Jack Lentz gave me the opportunity to begin my work as a racing chaplain.

O.T. Congrats to our daughter Kristen on graduating (again) from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with her Masters in Social Work. We are so proud of her.

Thompson gets started this Thursday night with a tune up session, weekly racing isn’t too far away. I also have an invitation to a lawn mower race on Long Island this weekend, don’t know if I’ll get there but I guess with the closing of the tracks on the Island they’ll race anything, anywhere! See you out at the track. Be a witness for our Lord with the ministry decals and apparel. See them at the Show Your Faith Apparel Store at www.rwjm.com.
