Coughlin Going for Two-In-A-Row in Return to Roots at Toledo

COLUMBUS, OHIO – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Cody Coughlin is returning to his racing roots on Saturday at Ohio’s Toledo Speedway. Coughlin, the reigning ARCA/CRA Super Series champion, will step into his No. 1 JEGS.com Super Late Model for the first time this season at the Spring 200 for the ARCA/CRA Super Series.

The 21-year-old Ohio native returns as the defending winner of the event. Coughlin graced victory lane in the 100-lap Super Late Model portion of the Spring 200 one year ago at Toledo. That’s a big reason why Coughlin has decided to give up an off weekend from his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule to go racing at Toledo.

“I’m super excited to get back in my Late Model,” said Coughlin, a Joe Gibbs Racing Development Driver. “Toledo was one of my favorite tracks even before I won there last year.”

Making History – Cody Coughlin the First to Win Dual CRA Championships

WINCHESTER, IN – Cody Coughlin has made history. The Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver is the first to win both Champion Racing Associations Late Model touring series championships in a single season.

With a fifth-place finish in Sunday’s Winchester 400 in Indiana, Coughlin clinched the 2016 ARCA/CRA Super Series championship. Friday he dominated the JEGS / CRA All-Stars Tour event until mechanical woes end the night early. He has built up a sufficient cushion in the standings that the minor bump in the road has no outcome in the final results and his second Tour title in that particular series.

Sunday’s race was the most difficult of Coughlin’s season. The already challenging Winchester 400 event became even more challenging after Coughlin slapped the turn four wall near the halfway mark of the marathon race. His JEGS.com Toyota Camry suffered enough damage to make the car hard to drive, but Coughlin never gave up.

Coughlin’s Championship Hunt Heads Into Final Weekend at Winchester

DELAWARE, OH – One weekend. Two races. 500 laps. One race track. 36 degrees of banking. That’s what remains in Cody Coughlin’s path as the 20 year-old chases history. Coughlin is attempting to become the first driver to win two Champion Racing Association Late Model touring series championships in a single season.

Coughlin, the 2013 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Pro Late Model champion, leads the points in that series by 108 heading into Friday night’s 100-lap season finale at Indiana’s high-banked half-mile of Winchester Speedway.

On Sunday, the Joe Gibbs Racing Development Driver has 400 laps separating him from the ARCA/CRA Super Series championship. Coughlin leads the points standings by 13 in that division.

Championship Lead Extended After Hard-Fought Battle at the “Big O”

OVID, MI – One of Elton John’s biggest hits was a song called “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” That could have been the mantra for Cody Coughlin on Saturday night as he fought hard despite mechanical issues to score a top 10 finish in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour 100-lap feature at Michigan’s Owosso Speedway.

Coughlin started second and led close to 50 laps, but in the second half of the race he had to deal with an engine that was down on power and a broken front spring.

Even while other cars may have been faster than Coughlin in the closing laps, he was able to bring his number-1 JEGS.com Toyota Camry to a seventh-place finish. The top-10 run also increased his points lead as his nearest competitors in the standings all finished behind him.

“I love racing at Winchester, so two races this weekend should be a lot of fun,” Coughlin said. “Winchester is fast and high-banked and that’s what I enjoy. I’m excited to run twice this weekend there and get even closer to the championships for both series.”

Coughlin Scores Another Top 10, Extends Points Lead at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – Cody Coughlin fought hard in Wednesday night’s Kalamazoo Klash 125 for the ARCA/CRA Super Series at Kalamazoo Speedway. He battled in traffic throughout the race and came home sixth in his inaugural start at the fast and challenging 3/8-mile Michigan oval.

Coughlin qualified seventh and started third after an invert of nine. He ran in the top five for much of the race, and was at one point as high as second.

However, with under 50 laps to go, Coughlin was hit from behind and moved out of the racing groove. The 20-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver went for a slide, but kept his JEGS.com Toyota Camry from going for a spin. When Coughlin regrouped, he found himself in sixth.

Coughlin Heading Back to Ohio Looking to Pad Points Lead

DELAWARE, OH – Cody Coughlin is heading to his home-state of Ohio this weekend as one of the most accomplished race car drivers in America in 2016. The Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver will compete in a Pro Late Model series just about an hour north of his home town of Delaware, Ohio. Coughlin will pilot the JEGS.com No. 1 Toyota Camry in the Bud St. Amant Memorial 125 at Spitzer Motor Speedway with the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour.

Spitzer Motor Speedway, formerly known as Mansfield Motorsports Park, is a track that Coughlin has never raced at. The track closed its doors in 2010 before reopening at the start of this year.

“I’ve never run there, but I really want to win there,” Coughlin said. “I’d really like to become the first winner at Spitzer in the JEGS Tour. Hopefully we’ll get that done on Saturday night.”

Coughlin Keeps Points Lead After Redbud 300

ANDERSON, IN – When Cody Coughlin left Indiana’s Anderson Speedway in May, he left a winner, and now, despite a race that ended early for the 20-year-old, he is still the ARCA/CRA Super Series point leader. Coughlin will head to Indianapolis on Friday night on top of the standings after an early race parts failure resulted in a 19th-place finish for the No. 1 JEGS.com Toyota Camry.

The day started off about as well as it possibly could for Coughlin and his Team JEGS crew. They were near the top of the board in practice, they qualified second and ran in the top five for much of the early part of the 300-lap affair.

During a restart on lap 54, the Ohio native and another driver bounced off of each other numerous times on the first lap after the restart. During the confrontation, the driveline broke on his Super Late Model. As a result, Coughlin’s car spun to bring out a caution.

Four Races in Seven Days up Next for CRA Points Leader Coughlin

COLUMBUS, OH – Cody Coughlin is about to begin one of the busiest weeks of his racing career.  Four races in seven days.  That’s something a dirt driver would do.  Coincidentally, the Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver will be hitting the dirt for one of those races, but first, it all begins at Indiana’s bullring of Anderson Speedway for the Redbud 300 on Saturday, July 16.  Ironically, the busy week will end at Anderson a week later for the 100-lap JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour event onJuly 23.

In between the two races at Anderson is the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Aspen Dental Eldora Dirt Derby at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway on Wednesday, July 20, and the ARCA/CRA Super Series 100 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Friday, July 22.

“This is going to be crazy, but also a ton of fun,” said the 20 year-old Coughlin.  “I’ve never done anything like this with so many races in such a short period of time.  I’ve also never raced on dirt before, so that race at Eldora is going to be interesting, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Coughlin Scores a Hat-trick With Win at Baer Field

FORT WAYNE, IN – When someone scores three goals in a hockey game, fans litter the ice with their hats. It’s known as the “hat-trick.” While nobody threw their hats onto the racing surface at Indiana’s Baer Field Motorsports Park on Saturday, Cody Coughlin scored himself a hat-trick with his third consecutive ARCA/CRA Super Series victory in a row. It’s a feat that is rare in racing.

The Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver had to work extremely hard for this one as he started in the ninth position in his No. 1 JEGS.com Toyota Camry and had to chase down the leaders from a deficit of more than six seconds.

Coughlin was told throughout the race by his crew chief, Jack Smith, and his spotter, Scott Wimmer, to be easy on his tires and the leaders would come to him. That’s exactly what Coughlin did and that’s exactly what happened.

Coughlin has never raced at the half-mile oval of Baer Field Motorsports Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana before, but he did recently test at the facility. The Delaware, Ohio driver said the test will help him get up to speed faster this weekend.

“Thanks to the test I no longer have to spend the beginning of practice figuring the place out,” said Coughlin, who is the current series point leader. “Now I can instead focus on the car and making sure I give the best feedback possible to my crew.”

The Race
This is Coughlin’s fourth Super Late Model start of the season, and first since his victory at Toledo Speedway in April.

The high-banked Anderson Speedway fits right in line with Coughlin’s driving style. Even though it’s only a quarter-mile in distance, it’s fast and it’s banked, and Coughlin loves both of those aspects. The 20 year-old has seen success at Anderson in the past when he scored a strong top-10 finish there en route to his JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour championship in 2013.

The Last Race
Cody Coughlin was victorious in April at a prestigious Super Late Model event at Toledo Speedway in Ohio. The Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver, started third, took the lead on lap 65 and led the remainder of the race to score the victory in the ARCA / CRA Super Series. The 20 year-old is the current series point leader.

Cody Coughlin Pre-Race News and Notes: North/South SLM Challenge

ARCA/CRA Super Series North/South Super Late Model Challenge No. 1 JEGS.com Toyota Camry News and Notes

The Start

This will be Cody Coughlin’s second Super Late Model start of the 2016 season.

Coughlin, who is racing for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year, has made plenty of starts at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee. He’s scored a pole at the famed racetrack and has a best finish of second in a Pro Late Model weekly event at the facility.

The North/South Super Late Model Challenge has a unique race format. Coughlin will run a 50-lap race on Friday evening. He must finish in the top 12 to then transfer into Saturday evening’s 75-lap Challenge race, which pits the best of the North vs the best of the South.

Coughlin’s last SLM start came at the Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway in March where he finished 30th due to a suspension part failure.

The Driver

Cody Coughlin is a 20 year old development driver for Joe Gibbs Racing. The Delaware, Ohio native will pilot the JEGS.com Super Late Model in approximately 12 more events this year across the Midwest and Southeast states.

“Nashville is one of the most historic tracks we race at, right there with Winchester and Salem, so a win there would be really cool to score.”

Longtime friend and accomplished Late Model driver Jack Smith will be calling the shots for Coughlin for the first time on Friday night. Cody, unlike his family predecessors, chose the path of circle-track racing rather than follow on the straight-line path set forth by the rest of his family. Cody’s mother, Di, and sister, Kennedi, attend Cody’s races in support of their favorite driver.

The Race Track

Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville is a 0.596-mile oval with 18 degrees of banking in the corners. The track was built as a 1.125-mile dirt track in 1904 and was converted to a half-mile paved oval in 1957. It originally featured turns with 35 degrees of banking, but the banking was cut to 18 degrees in 1972. The track was most recently repaved between the 1995 and 1996 seasons.

Cody Coughlin Eager for a Home-Field Victory on a Big Weekend in Columbus

Coughlin Fights Through the Heat to Score a Podium Finish at Winchester

(Delaware, Ohio) – It was a hot Labor Day at Indiana’s famed Winchester Speedway, but Cody Coughlin fought through the heat to score a third-place finish on the legendary 37-degrees of banking.   Coughlin started in the seventh spot and worked his way up to contend for the win in the ARCA/CRA Super Series Winchester 100.

The 19-year-old driver from Delaware, Ohio had one of the fastest race cars all weekend long at the World Stock Car Festival.  He was quick in every practice session and qualified in the top five on Sunday afternoon.
