2012: Won Record Third Série ACT Castrol Championship

What are your favorite hobbies in the off-season?

Snowmobiling and RC Racing. I’ve been doing that ever since I can remember. I think I was 8-years old when I got my first RC car, and when I started racing real cars I stopped doing it for awhile and picked it up again maybe 3-4 years ago. I do it about an hour from where I live, it’s a very nice club.

What do you do for work?

I paint cars. That’s why my racecar looks so good! And I own a recycling business with my brother.

ACT Makes Key Staff Changes

Lynch Joins Série ACT Castrol as Chief Steward

American Canadian Tour officials have announced the hiring of several new officials across the Série ACT Castrol, Thunder Road, and the American Canadian Tour for the 2013 season.

The overhaul is headlined by the hiring of former Kawartha Speedway (ON) manager Derek Lynch as the Chief Steward of the Série ACT Castrol. Lynch started racing with ACT at just 17 years old in the late 1980s, and had won the Oxford 250 before heading to the NASCAR Busch North Series. His career eventually led him to Charlotte, NC, where he worked in fabrication for Darrell Waltrip racing. In 2000, he married Cait Curley, daughter of long-time Thunder Road promoter Tom Curley, and took over management at Kawartha Speedway. He left Kawartha at the end of last season.

“I think the Castrol series is much like Kawartha. These teams are professional operations, and it’s going to be fun to work with guys doing this at such a high level,” said Lynch. “There are a lot of guys leading the charge that I’ve had the pleasure of racing with over the last few years, but what really stands out for me is the young talent on this tour. There is a great veteran presence, but there is also a talented group of young guys starting to make a name for themselves. I think that’s critical. I can’t wait to get started,” he finished.

Unbuckled: Getting To Know Wayne Helliwell, Jr.

Driver of the #27 E-Keys 4 Cars Ford

Hometown: Dover, NH

2012: Earned his first American Canadian Tour Championship

What are your favorite hobbies in the off-season?

I’m not sure I have any real hobbies; it’s a full-time job working in the garage. As a big family thing, we like to go out and try new random places to eat; stuff that’s way off the mark and just pretty different throughout New England. My job and racing bring me to a lot of different places, and many times we’ll just take off and try new stuff. I think you can find a lot of good places like that.

What do you do for work?

I am a fire-sprinkler system installer for Mammoth Fire Protection. This is the only job I’ve ever had. I’ve been working here since 1993, so about 20 years.

What is your biggest life accomplishment?

The things I’m most proud of are my three daughters. I was extremely young when I had my first daughter, I think I was 15 when the girl was pregnant, so that was a real life lesson. My daughter and I practically grew up together. There were a lot of things to learn as she grew and now that my daughters are almost adults, they are not only my children but really good friends as well. I never understood when my parents said the same thing about me, but now I do. They were young parents, too.

Unbuckled: Getting to Know Claude Leclerc

Unbuckled: Getting To Know Claude Leclerc-Driver of the #11 Leclerc Motorsports Chevrolet

 Hometown: Lanoraie, QC

2012 : Finished 12th Overall on the Série ACT Castrol

What are your favorite hobbies in the off-season?

Snowmobiling. I have been doing that for many years. I first started snowmobiling in 1974. I do not race them though, I just do it for fun!

What do you do for work?

Now I am retired from my business, but I work for myself in my home garage. I’m a mechanic.

What is your biggest life accomplishment?

When I won the 300-lap race at Sanair, that was so great for me. But it is a tie with the time I raced at Cayuga Speedway in Ontario for a 250-lap NASCAR North race. I finished third behind Dale Earnhardt and Randy Lajoie, and on the podium Dale gave me a handshake and said I did a very good job. He is a great man. It was a great day for me; I will never forget that.

 Big Plans for 2013?

I would like to race but one of my crewmembers is sick, and two other crewmembers have quit with family problems, so right now I need to find 2-3 new guys. I would like to make all of the Série ACT Castrol season, especially the International 500. I would also like to return to Thunder Road at some point in 2013.

Helliwell, Laperle Take Top Honors at ACT Banquet; Richard Green Wins Prestigious MacTavish Award

2012 American Canadian Tour Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., and 2012 Série ACT Castrol Champion Patrick Laperle were the stars of the ACT Banquet at the Doubletree Inn in Burlington, VT on Saturday, January 12th, earning the highest awards for their respective titles. ACT awarded over $700,000 in point funds and event purses to teams in 2012.

Helliwell was honored after one of the most entertaining point-battles of ACT’s history, beating out eight-time Tour Champion Brian Hoar in an epic battle for his first-ever ACT Championship. He won four races in 2012, including his first-career ACT victory, and only finished worse than seventh once. He won $10,000 for his ACT Championship, but also picked up an additional $5,000 from the Ford point fund for winning the Ford Blue Oval Challenge for a record third time in a row.

Laperle enjoyed a comeback year on the Série ACT Castrol. After falling as low as sixth in the beginning of the season, Laperle surged for four wins and nine top-fives to claim an unprecedented third Castrol Series Championship, along with a $10,000 check. Laperle, now with 17 feature victories, sits just one win away from having the most in Series history.

The prestigious MacTavish Award was given to car owner Richard Green of Enosburg Falls, VT. Green, who in 2012 owned the 16VT of Joey Becker and the 16NY car on the ACT Tour, was given the award for the first time for his dedication and loyalty to ACT, and his contributions to the sport of auto racing.

Quebec City racer Donald Theetge might have been the first Canadian to enter the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Goodyear Speedweek Cup event to be held at the New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, but the Canadian competitor list continues to lead the way toward the first-ever ACT events to be held during the World Series of Asphalt Short Track Racing in New Smyrna. The tradition of northern competitors heading to Florida from the days of Richie Evans, Jerry Cook, Bugsy Stevens and a host of the greatest from the Northeast Modified division to Late Model Canadian great Jr. Hanley— New Smyrna has always been the place to be during the heart of the northern winters.

ACT announced today that 2010 Castrol Champion Karl Allard has entered his Quebec City Larue Industrial team into the inaugural Goodyear Speedweek Cup event. Allard narrowly beat out another Quebec Champion, Patrick Laperle from Montreal, QC, who has also entered the two events. Laperle is one of the few ACT drivers to compete at New Smyrna in the past few years. His family team led most of the World Series standings in 2009 in the Late Model crate division before he was wrecked in the next to last night of competition. The Allard-Laperle rivalry will get an early start in 2011.

Lacombe was chased to the line by Patrick Laperle and rookie Martin Latulippe. Martin Lacombe came home fourth while Dery recovered to finish fifth. Jonathan Bouvrette, Philippe Jeannotte, Patrick Hamel, Claude Leclerc, and David Michaud completed the top ten.

MacDonald Wins Second Straight TD Bank 250

ACT Competitors Take Six of Top Ten Spots

Rowley, MA’s Eddie MacDonald earned his second straight TD Bank 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway on Sunday, July 18. MacDonald inherited the lead from Center Harbor, NH’s Brad Leighton who had a flat tire on lap 203. MacDonald was uncontested for the remaining 47 laps to earn the $29,800 pay day, which included lap money.

Leighton climbed his way from his 5th starting position to take the lead from pole sitter Brian Hoar on lap 13. He would then proceed to lap all but the top five cars on the racetrack before a lap 140 caution (the second of the race). The majority of the field used the lap 140 caution to make pit stops for fresh tires. Hoar used a unique strategy and just took one tire on the pit stop and beat Leighton back onto the racetrack.

With fresh tires Leighton again jumped out to the lead and was for the most part uncontested until a flat tire on lap 203 sent him spinning off the top of turns 1 and 2, bringing out the fifth and final caution of the 250. Leighton was able to remain on the lead lap and returned to the track after changing his tire as the sixth and final car on the lead lap.

American-Canadian Tour Competitors Take on the TD Bank 250

The American-Canadian Tour and the Série ACT Castrol Edge will both take a break from their 2010 season schedules this weekend to allow competitors the chance to race in the TD Bank 250, one of the biggest Late Model races in New England. The $25,000 to win event at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine has long been one of the favorite events for stock car racers, and, since 2007, Late Model drivers.

Ever since the TD Bank 250 made the change from Pro Stock/Super Late Model rides to ACT Late Model type cars in 2007, the American-Canadian Tour has been well represented by its regular competitors on the ACT Late Model Tour, Série ACT Castrol Edge and Thunder Road Late Models. ACT regulars have filled at least half of the top ten spots in each of the past three 250s including the 2007 winner Roger Brown and three of the top five in the 2009 event with Patrick Laperle second, John Donahue third, and 2009 ACT Late Model Tour Champion Brian Hoar fourth.

Laperle Team Fined for Victory Lane ALtercation; Laperle and Theetge Both Placed on Probation

The American Canadian Tour (ACT) announced today that the Patrick Laperle team has received a fine for a post-race incident in victory lane following the 150-lap event held at the Autodrome Chaudiere in Vallee Jonction, QC this past Saturday, June 12.

The disciplinary penalty resulted after Laperle, from Montreal, and Donald Theetge, from Quebec City, staged a furious battle for the win in the event which was postponed from the previous night due to an electrical black out. This necessitated running the race on Saturday at noon.

As a result of the constant battle between Theetge and Laperle during the final laps of the event, Karl Allard from Ste. Felicien, QC was able to take advantage of the intense battle. Allard made a three-wide pass underneath the pair as they banged and beat each other down the narrow front stretch at the ¼ mile bullring. Allard went on to win, with Theetge finishing in second. Laperle finished third.
