Decker Dashes to Ultimate Outlaw 100 Win at Outlaw Speedway

Second Win of the Season for Unadilla, NY Driver

DUNDEE, NY – June 20, 2017 – Billy Decker used the outside lane to take the lead from Larry Wight on a lap 68 restart and then fended off numerous challenges from reigning Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard over the final 20 laps to win the Ultimate Outlaw 100 at Outlaw Speedway on Tuesday night.
Decker was strong in lapped traffic and had to utilize both the inside and outside lanes over the final 15 laps to get his second victory of the season in the Series’ first visit to the Dundee, NY track since 1990 when it was known as Black Rock Speedway.
“This Paige Trucking car was really good,” Decker said in Victory Lane. “MPR racing works really hard on this thing and gave me a rocketship tonight. We were pretty good putting in some time and then had a really good restart with Larry (Wight). He left me a lane and I got to the lead.”

$10,000-to-Win On The Line at Big Show 9

Brett Hearn Brings New Elements to 2017 Edition
CONCORD, N.C. – June 16, 2017 – On the 2017 Super DIRTcar Series schedule, Brett Hearn’s Big Show 9 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway appears the same as every other race. But make no mistake; the 100-lap, $10,000-to-win event on Tuesday, June 27 is one of the biggest on the schedule this season and a race that drivers make sure they can attend.
“It’s kind of a fun diversion for me personally to put that show together and make some big things happen,” Hearn said. “Like every year, we have some pretty cool plans to make the show feel different than it does on a Friday night. I’ve tried to create an event that somebody marks on their calendar back in January or February and says “that’s a race I have to be at.”
The ninth edition of Hearn’s Big Show will feature an autograph session from 5:00pm to 6:00pm with Super DIRTcar Series and Albany-Saratoga drivers as well as Ms. Motorsports 2017 Taylor Albert and 1991 Midi Miller.

Alan Johnson Leads Super DIRTcar Series to Outlaw Speedway

Series Invades Dundee, NY Track on June 20
CONCORD, N.C. – June 15, 2017 – When the Super DIRTcar Series takes on Outlaw Speedway on Tuesday, June 20 for the Ultimate Outlaw 100, it will be a home game for full-time Series Driver Alan Johnson. The Middlesex, NY native races weekly on Friday nights at Outlaw, which could offer him a slight advantage entering the event.
The one-third mile track isn’t the trickiest track the Series will visit in 2017, but knowing its quirks could play to the advantage of the hometown regulars, including Johnson.
“It’s a pretty basic track,” Johnson said. “Turn two narrows a little bit. The wall comes up a little quick if you’re up on the outside.”

Sheppard Out-Duels Hearn for Five Mile Point Victory

Reigning Series Champion Earns First Win of 2017
KIRKWOOD, NY – June 11, 2017 – Matt Sheppard took the lead from Tyler Siri on lap 16 and then held off polesitter Brett Hearn throughout a flurry of late-race restarts to win the Modified 67 at Five Mile Point Speedway on Sunday night. The Waterloo, NY native had to be strong in all aspects of the race as he raced from the sixth starting position to overtake Siri and never looked back despite Hearn’s numerous attempts to take over the top spot.
“This thing was spot on right from the drop of the green,” Sheppard said in Victory Lane. “I could just drive it straight around the racetrack like I was on the highway. It was just great from lap one. I didn’t really like seeing all those caution, but just tried to kept it straight and luckily kept enough tire and brought it back to Victory Lane.”

Sheppard’s first win this season was also the 48th of his career with the Super DIRTcar Series and it was one he had to earn. Jimmy Phelps completed the podium behind Hearn. Continue reading ‘Sheppard Out-Duels Hearn for Five Mile Point Victory’

Matt Sheppard Takes First Utica-Rome Speedway Win of the Season, Rocky Warner and Robbie Speed Take Big Super DIRTcar Series Wins

VERNON, NY — On a bitter cold spring evening this past Sunday, April 30, the fans were treated to another exciting night of action on Wilber-Duck Chevrolet night that saw some late-race fireworks and late race charges to the win. Matt Sheppard found himself in familiar territory as he took the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modified win while Rocky Warner made a late race pass of leader Dave Marcuccilli to win the DIRTcar Sportsman Series event. Another last lap pass by Robbie Speed brought him another win as he took the checkered in the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series feature event.

Steve Paine and Mike Maresca led the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance 30 lap main event with Maresca grabbing the initial lead. A lap three caution brought the field back together and the restart, it third place starter Marc Johnson sweeping by the top two to take over the top spot. Johnson would hold onto that spot while Maresca, Robbie Bellinger, and Alan Johnson were battling for the podium positions. By lap seven, defending track champion Matt Sheppard broke into the top five after 12th and was looking for more. Another caution slowed the field again on lap 10 with Marc Johnson still the leader with Maresca, Alan Johnson, Sheppard, and Bellinger still showing in the top five on the scoreboard.

Maresca regained the lead on the restart, dropping Marc Johnson to second, with Johnson battling back to lead lap 13. Maresca powered back by to again lead on lap 14 with Sheppard following him through to grab the second position. Sheppard’s charge was not over as he slipped by Maresca to grab the lead on lap 17 and he immediately began to pull away. With 20 laps complete, Sheppard was showing the way with Maresca, Marc Johnson, rookie Claude Hutchings Jr., and Alan Johnson chasing.

Decker Scores Third-Straight Highbank Hold-Up Win at Fulton

Sheppard earns runner-up spot after starting 11th

FULTON, NY – April 29, 2017 – Billy Decker raced from the sixth-starting position to take the lead from outside polesitter Brett Hearn on lap 46 and held off a surging Matt Sheppard to claim his third straight Highbank Holdup 100 victory with the Super DIRTcar Series at FultonSpeedway on Saturday night.
After taking the lead, Decker battled through lapped traffic to build a lead over Hearn. He then had to contend with Sheppard, who rallied from the 11th starting spot to take the runner-up position on lap 56. Decker defended against the reigning champion’s efforts, particularly over the final 10 laps, to secure his first Series win since last year’s edition of the event on April 30, 2016.
“It was tough sledding,” Decker said of the battles throughout the race. “I think if you were rolling you could go pretty good. Matt (Sheppard) came a long way and there was a lot of dicing. I could really carry some speed through the center of the turn and I think that’s what did it.”

They will be joined by a complete show of Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modifieds on Wilber-Duck Chevrolet Night.

This Sunday, another full show of exciting Gates-Cole Auto Insurance is scheduled, thrilling fans they hustle around the spacious half mile.

Dave Marcuccilli dominated the Broedel Energy Sportsman main event last Sunday, as he outraced 49 other competitors to grab the win. This Sunday, many of the same competitors will be on hand to try to take the big Super DIRTcar Sportsman Series win including defending track champion Matt Janczuk, Rocky Warner, Chris Mackey, Jason Rood, Stephen Denton, AJ Filbeck, Brad Alger, Charles Tibbitts, Kyle Kiehn and more as they look to take on possible series invaders such as Shane Pecore, Ron Davis III, Brad Rouse, Martin Pelletier, Louie Jackson Jr. and many more. The last time the series made a stop at Utica-Rome Speedway was in 2004 when the Sportsman division still utilized open motors, and was won by veteran Mike Button.

DIRTcar Nationals Night 11 Recap

Fog a First Time Winner at Volusia
BARBERVILLE, FL. – February 25, 2016 – The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series took the track at Volusia Speedway Park for the first time on night 11 of DIRTcar Nationals. During the 40-lap Craftsman Club Feature fans and drivers in attendance witnessed a thick fog roll in after 10pm that was the concoction of two days of heavy rain followed by a third of sunny blue skies. For the drivers’ safety, the feature was called complete with 23 laps in the books due to poor visibility.
Despite the bad luck Mother Nature brought, Shane Clanton was the class of the field all around. He had the fastest lap time during qualifying with 15.861-second lap, won his heat race and led all 23-laps of the feature.
“I hate that Mother Nature brought this fog in, but it’s pretty bad out there,” Clanton said. “Every straightaway you had to pull a tearoff because it’s like rain. I hate it for the fans. They didn’t get to see a full feature here. I think we had the best car tonight, so hopefully we can repeat tomorrow and do it all over.”

Utica-Rome Speedway Ready for Ambitious 2017 Schedule

VERNON, NY – After a 2016 season that saw Mother Nature take her toll on the Utica-Rome Speedway, owners Bill and Kim Shea are ready for a fresh start in 2017. The schedule for the speedway is jam packed with some new events as well as old as the track looks to diversify its offerings to reach a wider variety of race fans.

New for 2017 is the Chill Factor 40 for the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance DIRTcar Modifieds scheduled for April 2. This is one of the first events, if not the first, scheduled in New York for the Modified and 602 Sportsman divisions. The 40-lap feature offers a $3,000 to win purse with $300 going to drivers who qualify. Also on the docket that day is the DIRTcar 602 Sportsman. Their 30-lap feature is set to pay $1,000 to win with $100 reserved for any drivers that qualifies. Drivers from other divisions are welcome to attend with several open practice sessions scheduled throughout the day for them regardless of division. The nightcap for the race is the only appearance in 2017 by Kings Smash’em Crash’em Demolition Derby.

After the Chill Factor the speedway goes silent for two weeks before returning for the traditional season opener for the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance DIRTcar Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman and DIRTcar Pro Stocks on April 23. This year these divisions are joined by the Gladiator Twin 20’s for the 360 Sprint Cars. For first time at Utica-Rome, Sprint Car teams have the chance to compete in a pair of $1,500 to win 20-lap features. Rules and qualifying procedures for the event will be announced in the coming weeks. This visit by the 360 Sprint Cars is the first of many as Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints return for their traditional dates on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends while the 360 Sprint Car open Cole Cup is set for October.

For the first time, the Big-Block Modifieds will take on the newly converted dirt track of Airborne Speedway (Plattsburg, N.Y.) and the fast four-tenths-mile Outlaw Speedway (Dundee, N.Y.).

Friesen’s Big-Block Modified Roots Helped Create NASCAR Ride

CONCORD, N.C. – Jan. 11, 2017 – One of the biggest stars of the Super DIRTcar Series will race full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series come 2017. Sprakers, NY driver Stewart Friesen has partnered with Chris Larsen to create Halmar Friesen Racing for his first full-time foray into NASCAR Racing, he announced Monday. Tommy Baldwin Jr. will be the team’s crew chief.

Friesen made his NASCAR Truck Series debut last July at Eldora Speedway, NASCAR’s only race on dirt. The ride was supposed to be a one-time deal, but quickly blossomed into five more races for Friesen before the end of 2016. It led to the formation of his new team, which will be based in Mooresville, NC.

The owners of the facility, Bill and Kim Shea, have elected to make a move into the DIRTcar Racing fold. It is the first time in over 10 years that the facility will fly the DIRTcar banner.

“We had a great run with NASCAR but after looking at our options going forward Kim and I think it’s time to try something different,” said speedway owner Bill Shea. “Last season we ran a Super DIRTcar Series event and we had a great response from the fans and the drivers. We want to build upon that for this year. We look forward to furthering the relationship with DIRTcar going forward as we continue to grow Utica-Rome Speedway.”

The speedway and DIRTcar officials have been working behind the scenes over the past few months to iron out the details of the deal. Mike Perrotte, the Director of Series and Sanctioning for DIRTcar Northeast, was excited about finally being able to bring Utica-Rome Speedway into the mix.

Sheppard Breaks Out The Broom

Nothing says champion like sweeping the weekend at The Dirt Track at Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. – October 29, 2016 – Matt Sheppard, the driver of the FX Caprara No. 9s Big Block Modified, made a mark in history this weekend as he broke a record and won his fifth Super DIRTcar Series Championship. Sheppard proved once again that he was the man to beat Saturday night during the Bad Boy Off Road World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

“This place was so racy tonight,” said Sheppard in victory lane. “These big blocks put on a heck of a show tonight. We were racing two, three, four wide there. Last time we started on the pole and led the whole race. I was happy to get that win and tonight was even more satisfying. Starting in the back a little bit further and driving through the field. I just can’t say enough about this racecar. It was just fantastic.”

Pat Ward and Justin Haers led the 29-car field to the initial green flag. On the drop of the green, a four-car battle for the lead emerged as Ward, Hears, Brett Hearn, and Billy Decker all ran wire-to-wire – until Haers took the lead and pulled away from the field on lap two.
