Transforming the Steel Palace to the Clay Palace

CONCORD, NC – Sept. 11, 2017 – As soon as Oswego Speedway closed its doors on the 2017 season last week, DIRTcar Racing crews began the arduous task of once again taking the historic speedway back to its dirt-racing roots, transforming the Steel Palace to a Clay Palace for Racing’s Biggest Party. For the second straight year, Oswego Speedway will host NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week from October 1- 8, 2017.

This year, officials gained access to the facility two weeks earlier than last year in order to prepare a better racing surface and ensure the best NAPA Super DIRT Week ever.

Last week crews got busy skirting the asphalt with jersey barriers to increase the height of the famous inside steel wall. Then, during the weekend, multiple truckloads of mulch were laid down over the asphalt track to preserve the racing surface, help with necessary drainage, and simplify the impending clean-up process.

Hearn Uses Home Track Advantage To Win Mr. DIRT Track USA & End Series Winless Streak

It was just over two years to the day that Brett Hearn last stood in victory lane on the Super DIRTcar Series. Who would have thought he’d go winless since the August 2015 tour stop at Cornwall. Well, that all changed on Thursday night with a dominant performance in Lebanon Valley’s Mr. DIRT Track USA.
Hearn, who will be crowned champion at the Valley for yet another year on Saturday night, took the lead from Eddie Marshall with a power move from fourth to first on lap 18 and was never really challenged again as he went on to grab the $17,500 payday.

“They say if you’re gonna break out of a slump, you might as well win the one that pays the most money,” Hearn said with a laugh. “What a hot rod man. This car was so good tonight.”

The Sussex, NJ driver took his time early in the event, using patience until the time was right to strike.

Local Talent Looks to Battle Super DIRTcar Series Stars at Autodrome Drummond

CONCORD, NC – July 13, 2017 – One of the most popular stops on the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified Tour is the annual summer trip to the beautiful province of Quebec with back-to-back stops at Autodrome Drummond and Autodrome Granby with Drummondville being the first stop on Monday, July 24.

Current Drummond track points leader and 2017 Feature winner Steve Bernard is looking forward to this stop at one of his local tracks. ”We are confident in our equipment. We had our motor refreshed in preparation for Volusia,” mentioned Bernard, who ran his Nokian Tires #54 Big-Block Modified at Airborne Park Speedway last week, bringing home a solid eighth-place finish. ”We hoped to use Airborne and Cornwall [which was rained out] to get some laps on the car and get ready for the Quebec tour.”

Bernard believes that to collect a podium finish at Drummond in the Super DIRTcar Series, he must have a good start. Being good early in the night is the key to success. ”We need to be fast in time trials and our heat in order to secure a good starting spot in the Feature. If we do that, our chances are better to accomplish a good result.”

On Monday evening, the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame inducted it’s 2017 class which included active drivers, Alan Johnson and Steve Paine along with pioneer Freddy Adam’s.

New York Number: Friesen Flies to Victory at Utica-Rome

Sprakers, NY Driver Scores First Win of 2017 in New Yorker 100
VERNON, NY – July 2, 2017 – Stewart Friesen took the lead from Pat Ward on lap 55 with a pass in the slick outside lane after a lap 45 restart and withstood a fury of action, including a pair of red flags in the final 25 laps to win the New Yorker 100 at Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday night. It was the first Super DIRTcar Series victory of the season for the Sprakers, NY native and the 24th of his career to give him sole possession of 11th on the Series all-time wins list.

“What a race car, wow,” Friesen said in Victory Lane. “This Halmar team just worked so hard to be better on these slick tracks.”
The track was especially slick for the New Yorker 100, despite the excessive amount of rain over the last month in the area. After setting the Pole Position Raceway Fast Time and then winning his heat, Matt Sheppard pulled the pole for the 100-lap main event.
Sheppard came to the green flag with Max McLaughlin on the outside of the front row. The Waterloo, NY native Sheppard took the early lead while Ward, who is a weekly regular at Utica-Rome along with Sheppard, quickly jumped into third behind third-starting Billy Decker.

Decker kept pace with the Series point leader after they caught lapped traffic on lap 15 and on lap 37 drove to the outside of Sheppard for the lead in turn three. Off of turn four, Decker crossed lanes and raced inside of Sheppard in turn one and completed the pass exiting turn two to lead lap 38.

Stewart Friesen Wins Wild New Yorker 100 at Utica-Rome Speedway

VERNON, NY- After a rough couple of days with the weather that included over four inches of rain, a tornado touchdown a quarter mile away, and localized flooding, Utica-Rome Speedway was greeted by sunny skies this past Sunday, July 2.  A blockbuster show presented by Clinton Tractor and Wilber-Duck Chevrolet featured the Super DIRTcar Series Modified Series New Yorker 100 that saw XXX get the win.  Chuck Hebing won the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint 25-lap battle over Danny Varin, but it was Varin who took the Donath MotorWorx ESS Speedweek war as he was crowned the champion of the five-race series.  Stewart Friesen won the firework filled New Yorker with Chuck Hebing taking the ESS Speedweek finale.  Mark Effner took home his first ever Broedel Energy Sportsman win.

Defending Utica-Rome Speedway Modified champion Matt Sheppard and Max McLaughlin led the 30-car Super DIRTcar Series New Yorker 100 field to the green with Sheppard grabbing the early lead.  The early portion of the race went incident free as Sheppard tried to pull away from the field, but third place starter Billy Decker kept pace with him.  As the duo started to reach lapped traffic, Sheppard show his mastery of the Vernon oval as he used the lap cars to stretch his lead over Decker.  With 25 laps complete, the leaderboard showed Sheppard over Decker, Pat Ward, Tim Fuller, and Stewart Friesen.

Decker would not let Sheppard out of his sights as the veteran driver began to close the gap and on lap 37, Decker would get alongside Sheppard for the lead.  Contact with lapped car slowed Sheppard’s pace enough to allow Decker to grab the top spot on lap 38.  The complexion of the race took on a new look a lap later as Sheppard slowed with a left front flat tire, bringing out the caution.

Decker Dashes to Ultimate Outlaw 100 Win at Outlaw Speedway

Second Win of the Season for Unadilla, NY Driver

DUNDEE, NY – June 20, 2017 – Billy Decker used the outside lane to take the lead from Larry Wight on a lap 68 restart and then fended off numerous challenges from reigning Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard over the final 20 laps to win the Ultimate Outlaw 100 at Outlaw Speedway on Tuesday night.
Decker was strong in lapped traffic and had to utilize both the inside and outside lanes over the final 15 laps to get his second victory of the season in the Series’ first visit to the Dundee, NY track since 1990 when it was known as Black Rock Speedway.
“This Paige Trucking car was really good,” Decker said in Victory Lane. “MPR racing works really hard on this thing and gave me a rocketship tonight. We were pretty good putting in some time and then had a really good restart with Larry (Wight). He left me a lane and I got to the lead.”

$10,000-to-Win On The Line at Big Show 9

Brett Hearn Brings New Elements to 2017 Edition
CONCORD, N.C. – June 16, 2017 – On the 2017 Super DIRTcar Series schedule, Brett Hearn’s Big Show 9 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway appears the same as every other race. But make no mistake; the 100-lap, $10,000-to-win event on Tuesday, June 27 is one of the biggest on the schedule this season and a race that drivers make sure they can attend.

“It’s kind of a fun diversion for me personally to put that show together and make some big things happen,” Hearn said. “Like every year, we have some pretty cool plans to make the show feel different than it does on a Friday night. I’ve tried to create an event that somebody marks on their calendar back in January or February and says “that’s a race I have to be at.”

The ninth edition of Hearn’s Big Show will feature an autograph session from 5:00pm to 6:00pm with Super DIRTcar Series and Albany-Saratoga drivers as well as Ms. Motorsports 2017 Taylor Albert and 1991 Midi Miller.

Alan Johnson Leads Super DIRTcar Series to Outlaw Speedway

Series Invades Dundee, NY Track on June 20
CONCORD, N.C. – June 15, 2017 – When the Super DIRTcar Series takes on Outlaw Speedway on Tuesday, June 20 for the Ultimate Outlaw 100, it will be a home game for full-time Series Driver Alan Johnson. The Middlesex, NY native races weekly on Friday nights at Outlaw, which could offer him a slight advantage entering the event.
The one-third mile track isn’t the trickiest track the Series will visit in 2017, but knowing its quirks could play to the advantage of the hometown regulars, including Johnson.
“It’s a pretty basic track,” Johnson said. “Turn two narrows a little bit. The wall comes up a little quick if you’re up on the outside.”

Sheppard Out-Duels Hearn for Five Mile Point Victory

Reigning Series Champion Earns First Win of 2017

KIRKWOOD, NY – June 11, 2017 – Matt Sheppard took the lead from Tyler Siri on lap 16 and then held off polesitter Brett Hearn throughout a flurry of late-race restarts to win the Modified 67 at Five Mile Point Speedway on Sunday night. The Waterloo, NY native had to be strong in all aspects of the race as he raced from the sixth starting position to overtake Siri and never looked back despite Hearn’s numerous attempts to take over the top spot.
“This thing was spot on right from the drop of the green,” Sheppard said in Victory Lane. “I could just drive it straight around the racetrack like I was on the highway. It was just great from lap one. I didn’t really like seeing all those caution, but just tried to kept it straight and luckily kept enough tire and brought it back to Victory Lane.”

Sheppard’s first win this season was also the 48th of his career with the Super DIRTcar Series and it was one he had to earn. Jimmy Phelps completed the podium behind Hearn. Continue reading ‘Sheppard Out-Duels Hearn for Five Mile Point Victory’

Matt Sheppard Takes First Utica-Rome Speedway Win of the Season, Rocky Warner and Robbie Speed Take Big Super DIRTcar Series Wins

VERNON, NY — On a bitter cold spring evening this past Sunday, April 30, the fans were treated to another exciting night of action on Wilber-Duck Chevrolet night that saw some late-race fireworks and late race charges to the win. Matt Sheppard found himself in familiar territory as he took the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modified win while Rocky Warner made a late race pass of leader Dave Marcuccilli to win the DIRTcar Sportsman Series event. Another last lap pass by Robbie Speed brought him another win as he took the checkered in the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series feature event.

Steve Paine and Mike Maresca led the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance 30 lap main event with Maresca grabbing the initial lead. A lap three caution brought the field back together and the restart, it third place starter Marc Johnson sweeping by the top two to take over the top spot. Johnson would hold onto that spot while Maresca, Robbie Bellinger, and Alan Johnson were battling for the podium positions. By lap seven, defending track champion Matt Sheppard broke into the top five after 12th and was looking for more. Another caution slowed the field again on lap 10 with Marc Johnson still the leader with Maresca, Alan Johnson, Sheppard, and Bellinger still showing in the top five on the scoreboard.

Decker Scores Third-Straight Highbank Hold-Up Win at Fulton

Sheppard earns runner-up spot after starting 11th

FULTON, NY – April 29, 2017 – Billy Decker raced from the sixth-starting position to take the lead from outside polesitter Brett Hearn on lap 46 and held off a surging Matt Sheppard to claim his third straight Highbank Holdup 100 victory with the Super DIRTcar Series at FultonSpeedway on Saturday night.
After taking the lead, Decker battled through lapped traffic to build a lead over Hearn. He then had to contend with Sheppard, who rallied from the 11th starting spot to take the runner-up position on lap 56. Decker defended against the reigning champion’s efforts, particularly over the final 10 laps, to secure his first Series win since last year’s edition of the event on April 30, 2016.
“It was tough sledding,” Decker said of the battles throughout the race. “I think if you were rolling you could go pretty good. Matt (Sheppard) came a long way and there was a lot of dicing. I could really carry some speed through the center of the turn and I think that’s what did it.”

This Sunday, another full show of exciting Gates-Cole Auto Insurance is scheduled, thrilling fans they hustle around the spacious half mile.

DIRTcar Racing Membership Required for All Sanctioned Events

All Division drivers must have a DIRTcar License to participate and receive benefits

CONCORD, N.C. – March 2, 2017 – Starting with the first events of 2017, any participants of a DIRTcar-sanctioned event will be required to hold a DIRTcar Racing membership. The practice of a mandatory membership is common in sports, including motorsports, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between the drivers and the point fund, rule book, official decisions and appeals.
