Gamblers Classic Three Quarter Midget Win to Anthony Sesely; NAPA Boardwalk Hall Indoor Saturday Support Features Won by Rudolph, Sieber and Hieber

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Anthony Sesely of Matawan, N.J. drove perhaps the most perfect race of his career and won the biggest race prize in Indoor Three Quarter midget racing Saturday when he led the 40-lap Gamblers Classic feature wire to wire. Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, N.Y. won his third 600 Micro feature in his last four starts, Cody Sieber of Mifflintown, Pa., won the Champ Kart main event and Gary Hieber took the checkered flag in the Slingshot feature. Sesely’s route to the popular win was fashioned by holding off a variety of challengers including past Gamblers Classic winners Ted Christopher and Lou Cicconi, Jr. Sesely then had to hold off a determined Jimmy Blewett to secure the win.

“Every restart, every lap was nerve wracking,” said Sesely. “But the car was good and I was able to hold my line even in lapped traffic when I had to.” The race behind him took a dramatic turn on lap 38 when Christopher, making a bold bid for second place against Blewett, wound up becoming airborne off Blewett’s car and flipped wildly across the track. He was uninjured and Blewett’s car survived the collision without mechanical problems. Rowan Pennink came from way off the pace to finish third with Lou Cicconi, Jr., Friday night’s TQ feature winner, fourth at the end and Mike Lichty taking fifth.

With the win, Sesely earned the Fatheadz Eyewear TQ Indoor Racing Series points championship. The series included events previously promoted by Len Sammons Motorsports Productions at Baltimore, Md., and Providence, R.I. in addition to the pair of NAPA Auto Parts Boardwalk Hall Racing Weekend races.

Cicconi Returns to A.C. Boardwalk Hall Victory Lane; Kyle Lick Is Surprise 600 Micro Feature Victor; Slingshot and Champ Kart Fields Set For NAPA Auto Parts Finale Saturday

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Lou Cicconi, Jr., Lester, Pa., rebounded after suffering a blown engine in his originally assigned car, climbed behind the wheel of a Three Quarter midget owned by BJ MacDonald that he had previously driven to two wins inside Boardwalk Hall and picked up the win in the 30-lap NAPA Auto Parts Indoor Race Weekend headliner Friday night. Kyle Lick of Catasauqua, Pa., utilized patience, avoided pitfalls that claimed several leaders over the last five laps of the 20-lap 600 Micro feature, and dirt tracked his way to the biggest win of his career. Cicconi made his bid for the lead against fellow front row starter Ted Christopher with a daring outside pass following a mid-race restart, then held off a late race charge by first time Indoor TQ starter Jimmy Blewett to preserve the win.

“This was a great win,” said Cicconi. “With the blown engine this morning, the win helps pay for it. It’s good to be back in this car, it’s like an old pair of shoes. They still smell good when you put them back on,” Cicconi said. Runnerup Blewett moved from the fifth row at the start to finish a solid second. “I have to thank the fans for coming out tonight,” said Blewett. “This win is for my grandfather. He bought the car for me, and is recovering from open heart surgery. This should cheer him up,” Blewett said. Ryan Smith, Christopher, and Erick Rudolph rounded out the top five.

Rudolph survived a mid-race brush with the wall to rebound for a top five placing. Ryan Preece, Anthony Sesely, Ryan Tidman, Tim Buckwalter and Paul Lotier completed the top ten in the TQ Midget feature.

Mike Perry Remembers Newtown with Top-5 Finish in Providence

Perry Eager for 2013 Karting & Modified Racing

Mike Perry of Dighton, MA closed the 2012 season with a fourth-place finish on New Year’s Eve at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The Mike Roe #26 prominently featured “Prayers for Sandy Hook” decals in recognition of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. “We were going to do something at the race but it was last minute, we were going to sell stickers and donate the money to the fund. … I gave out stickers to Brandon Rusczek and Ryan Preece.” Perry will keep the paint scheme on his kart for all 2013 races.

Perry has been racing Champ Karts since he was 18. He has raced at Atlantic City twice and every event in Providence. “I was glad that we redrew 3rd, putting us out of any disaster that could happen because there is usually 1 or 2 big wrecks. This was our first race ever on a new chassis that Brandon Mullis at Mullis Speed Concept prepared T/O Redemptions (powered by Baker Racing Engines) with FFM cut and prepared tires. We switched chassis builders over the winter and we were happy with a 4th place finish.”

The first of 18 races on the 2013 slate will be Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on February 2nd. After a successful debut with the new Champ Kart, Perry is looking forward to Atlantic City. “We actually brought the kart back to the shop that night and the next day we unloaded it and I talked with Brandon Mullis about what we can do and we changed a bunch of things on the kart. These karts react to small changes unlike the other chassis make (Prokart) where we would have to make big changes in order for it to respond.”

Packed House On Hand For A.C. Gamblers Classic; Rudolph Scores A Double In Three Quarter Midgets And 600 Micro Sprints; Daley Repeats ‘08 Champ Kart Win; Eagan Tops In Slingshot Thriller

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — In front of one of the largest crowds in Boardwalk Hall's Gamblers Classic ten year history, Ransomville, N.Y.'s Erick Rudolph dominated the weekend events. After winning the Micro Sprint features Friday and Saturday, Rudolph saved his best effort for last when he overpowered the competition, winning the Gamblers Classic for Three Quarter Midgets.

The race was a three-man affair from the outset. Front row starters Stewart Friesen and Rudolph paced the field and sparred with each other through a series of double file restarts. In one of those instances, Rudolph seemed to gain the upper hand only to have the start called back by officials who added a two position penalty for the infraction.

Undeterred, Rudolph passed Friesen after challenging for the lead for several laps. Friesen seemed destined for a second place finish but a late race tangle with a surging Billy Pauch saw Friesen spin and Pauch penalized.

Rudolph ruled the roost as the laps ran out. The big mover in the last five laps was Ryan Smith, who was trying to put a 600 Micro in the winners circle for the first time. Smith settled for second place after a sterling drive ahead of Jon Gambuti, ninth starter Mike Lichty and sixteenth place starter Tim Buckwalter.

Buckwalter Claims Wild TQ-Midget Prelim; Carpenter Aces 600cc Micro Sprint Main

Atlantic City, NJ — Crazy.

That’s how Tim Buckwalter, 22, of Douglassville, Pa., described Friday night’s TQ-Midget 30-lap preliminary feature event at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Buckwalter claimed his first-ever indoor event in front of a large crowd that sat in absolute awe over the transgressions of a race that had many leaving the gates with absolute anticipation for Saturday night’s 40-lap Gambler’s Classic finale.

When the race was all said and done, only four cars finished the distance after a lap 25 crash took out or left 15 cars to the pit area. And many of those sent to the pit area were the heavy hitters like then-race leader Chris DeRitis, Lou Cicconi Jr, Joey Payne, Mike Lichty and Ted Christopher, who survived the turn two crash but he was later black flagged as his left-front wheel was busted.

Familiar Faces from ISMA to Run for Gambler’s Classic Gold at Atlantic City

Leading the way into this weekend’s famed Atlantic City Gambler’s Classic will be none other than ISMA supermodified young lion Mike Lichty. Lichty, after a win at Providence, RI in the Leonard J. A point system was set up in honor of the late founder and publisher of Area Auto Racing News who passed away in 1991.

Lichty is about to embark on a new career challenge running in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series.

“I tested at Chicagoland two years ago and put in 350 laps at Motor Mile with Dennis Setzer’s help,” said Lichty about his budding plans. Loudon, Martinsville Iowa and O’Reilly Motorsports Park are definitely on Lichty’s schedule at present with more events, perhaps totaling as many as a dozen, hopefully to follow.
