Polewarczyk, Baldwin, Dunn, Meservey, & Tarbell Win in Canaan’s Farewell

From Pole to Pole- Joey Wins the Last Canaan Feature

The Granite State Pro Stock Series had the privilege to run the last race ever on the Canaan Fair Speedway asphalt last Saturday night, September 14, 2013. You would have thought it was Friday the 13th or a full moon night with all the trouble that occurred while running the 100-lap race.

In the end, Joey Polewarczyk drove a nearly flawless race, leading from the drop of Bryon Callen’s green flag, and holding off a full field of potent Pro Stocks. Sixteen caution flags slowed the on track action and kept the field tightly packed throughout the event. Pole, from Hudson, NH, leading from the start, could never get very far ahead as Jeremy Davis applied pressure until a lap 4 restart, when Davis wrestled the lead away from Pole, but Joey wasn’t going to give up and dogged Davis until a lap 40 restart saw the lead swap again. Pole would not relinquish that lead and he would run like he was on a rail, crossing under the checkers with a win for his first GSPSS appearance. This was also the first time Joey Pole had raced on the Canaan Fair Speedway asphalt.

In victory lane, Joey said “The Granite State Series is a tough division with a lot of great drivers. I’m really happy to win in the first time out in the series and also happy to win the last one at Canaan.”

Joey Polewarczyk Wins Granite State Pro Stock Canaan 100 Finale

CANAAN, NH — Joey Pole made history on September 14, adding name to the impressive list of winners for the Granite State Pro Stock Series on Saturday, and also by winning the final race at the 1/3 mile banked oval. 28 cars attempted to qualify for this historic event, with 22 taking the green flag.

2012 Canaan Pro Stock Champion Jeremy Davis, winner of the May 4th event, led the field down to the green, but the caution came out before the first lap could be completed, setting a tone for the event. By the time the race was 10 laps in, four cars had already retired from the event. Pole and Davis took time leading the race with Davis leading all but the opening two cirsuits.

At the lap 25 mark, Davis continued to hold on with Pole second, Matt Frahm third, Bobby Baillargeon fourth and Larry Gelinas fifth. The seventh caution of the affair came out on the 34th lap for Wayne Heliwell Sr. Another handful of cautions slowed up the event by the halfway point. By this time, Pole had re-taken the lead over Davis, Gelinas, Davis and Frahm.

Wentworth Finishes Strong at Oxford Plains

FWelch Wins Final Canaan Race, Crazy Horse Cars Fast At NHMS

SOUTH PARIS, Maine – Don Wentworth of Otisfield, Maine, is a veteran stock car driver who won’t quibble with one inevitable truth in short-track racing: It’s better to finish strong than it is to sputter to the finish line and spend all winter trying to figure out what went wrong.

Wentworth made sure he put a solid capper on the 2013 season at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, posting a pair of podium finishes in the final two events of the inaugural Pro Late Model season at the track. Wentworth won the 40-lap feature at Oxford on August 30.

“It was pivotal for us,” said the driver of the No. 63 K&K Excavation Chevrolet. “It was a struggle (leading up to that). I don’t know anybody that races these things that is very tolerant of losing. We had some runs this year that were woulda, coulda, shouldas, but in the end it’s really fun on the ride home being able to say, ‘That thing was really quick, huh?’ instead of going home saying ‘What the heck is wrong here?’”

Canaan Fair Speedway Finale Up Next for the Granite State Pro Stocks

SEEKONK, MA — For many of the competitors on the Granite State Pro Stock Series, Saturday, September 14 will be a surreal day for them. It is the next stop on the 2013 schedule for the Granite State Pro Stocks, one that will have major point championship implications.

But more than that, drivers like Jeremy Davis, Zig Gino, Donnie Lashua among many others have spent time in Canaan Fair Speedway Victory Lane. Davis, Gino and Lashua have been honored as champions there as well; Davis will go down as the final Pro Stock champion at the 1/3 mile oval.

Jeremy Davis comes into Canaan Fair Speedway as the most recent winner there from the Granite State Pro Stocks, picking up the win on May 4th, the second event on the schedule. Lashua is the defending winner of this late summer classic, charging to the win on September 16, 2013. This time, for both of these, and many others, it’s personal.

This Saturday night, August 31st will be the final weekly racing show in the history of Canaan Fair Speedway on the “Awesome Asphalt” facility. The track has been sold and the new owner has no plans for racing in 2014 or beyond.

“This Saturday night we will say a tearful good-bye to friends, racers and crews, fans, sponsors and a race track we all love, stated General Manager, Dick Therrien. We have all worked so hard to make this into a show place for auto racing here in the Northeast and this is home. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, and sadly, this is the last race in the history on the asphalt here at Canaan.

Riverside Champ Luke Shannon Doubles Up; Martin Impresses In Late Model Debut; Fellows, Lambert Score Top-5s

SOUTH PARIS, Maine – After winning the Late Model championship at Riverside Speedway last season, Luke Shannon wanted more. The Groveton, N.H., driver spent the better part of this season getting a new car up to speed, and last weekend it paid off.

Twice.

Shannon led the final 16 laps of a make-up feature from the previous week, and then stormed from the rear of the field to win the regularly-scheduled 40-lap Late Model feature at Riverside on Saturday, August 10, to earn his first two victories of the season.

“The car was new at the beginning of the year, and we struggled pretty bad the first race with it. I just couldn’t get it to go,” Shannon said. “We raced the ACT (Late Model Tour) race with it, and I still hadn’t gotten the handle on it. So, I took almost a month off to try and figure it out.

Tremont Takes First Northern Modified Challenge Series Win at Canaan

Veteran leads 49 of 50 laps; point standings tighten

CANAAN, NH – Multi-time Modified stock car racing champion Kenny Tremont, Jr., earned his first-ever victory on the Northern Modified Challenge Series on Sunday, August 11, taking a convincing win in the Subway Fresh Fit 50 at Canaan Fair Speedway. The win was the 303rd feature event victory of the West Sand Lake, NY veteran’s celebrated career.

Tremont was strong in his qualifying heat at the fast 1/3-mile asphalt oval, finishing second to point leader Jessey Mueller. By virtue of a blind draw, Tremont started on the outside of the front row in the 50-lap main event, lining up next to Brandon, VT’s Vince Quenneville, Jr., who also won a qualifying heat.

The opening laps took their toll, drawing four caution periods in the first eight circuits. The restarts set up an entertaining faceoff between Quenneville and Tremont, however, and Tremont surprised even himself in using the tricky outside lane to grab the lead each time. Quenneville was able to lead only the second lap of the race before Tremont pulled out to a comfortable advantage.

Youth and Experience top Northern Modified Challenge Series entering Canaan

Teenager Mueller and veteran Gonyo sit 1-2 in standings

CANAAN, NH – An equal mix of youth and experience lead the all-new Northern Modified Challenge Series stock car tour to Canaan Fair Speedway on Sunday, August 11. Eighteen year-old Jessey Mueller has a small six-point advantage on Leon Gonyo – a veteran of five decades of racing – entering the Subway Fresh Fit 50. The event is round three of the five-race championship sanctioned by Devil’s Bowl Speedway management.

The Canaan event will be the first experience at the fast 1/3-mile New Hampshire oval for most of the Northern Modified Challenge Series drivers. Mueller, of Olmstedville, NY, has a history of success at new tracks; he won the NMCS opener at Thunder Road (VT) Speedbowl in his first start there in May and also won a special event in his first trip to Stafford (CT) Motor Speedway in 2012. Gonyo, of Chazy, NY has accumulated championships and dozens of victories at several tracks since the early 1970s.

The pair finished 1-2 in the first-ever NMCS race at Thunder Road on Memorial Day, and were second and third, respectively, behind winner Todd Stone of Middlebury, VT in the C.J. Richards Memorial at Devil’s Bowl Speedway last week. Mueller has 106 points to Gonyo’s 100 entering Canaan. Hunter Bates of Middlebury, VT is third with 92 points, Vince Quenneville, Jr., of Brandon, VT is fourth at 88 points, and Joe Williams of Scotia, NY sits fifth at 86 points. Stone’s Devil’s Bowl win moved him up to sixth place.

Zahensky & Caron Grab Wins at Canaan

CANAAN, NH — It was a great night of racing at the NASCAR sanctioned Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, New Hampshire as the track produced a winner in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Modified division that turned fifteen just last week. Winners included Brad Zahens ky, Guy Caron, Erin Vien, Mitchell Davis, Alexis Aiken and Dan Poliquin.

Young Brad Zahensky who just turned fifteen years of age last week survived a race long challenge from David Miller Jr. to secure his first ever Papa Z’s Modified victory. The win was not an easy one as he not only had to stave off Miller’s challenges, he also had multi-feature winner Michael Willis Jr. in his mirror as well. No one had enough to steal the youngsters thunder as the race had just a single caution. Following the trio to the stripe were Walter Hammond and Walt Hammond Jr. Heat checkers flew for Zahensky and Willis.

The Newport Chevrolet Late Models put on a classic race as Guy Caron worked his way to the front at the mid-race point and never looked back. Meanwhile, Arnie Stygles and Rich Dubeau were battling for the runner-up spot, and Ricky Bly was trying to hold off point leader, Scott MacMichael for fifth. When the checkers flew it was Caron, Stygles, Dubeau, Bly and MacMichael in that order. Tyler Alati and Dubeau carried heat checkers.

PASS Super Late Models & Mods Dropped from Canaan June 29th Schedule

CANAAN, NH — Canaan Fair Speedway General Manager, Dick Therrien, and Pro All Stars Series President, Tom Mayberry have come to a conclusion that it will be in everyone’s best interest to cancel the PASS Super Late Model, and PASS Mod portion of the Saturday, June 29th event due to the fact that the week leading up to the event is going to see considerable heavy rains and thunderstorms that will cause pit parking to become a major issue as Canaan’s car counts are very strong this year, leaving fewer parking spaces available for the giant PASS haulers.

“We didn’t want to have to park a lot of quality teams in a muddy parking area that would have made them quite unhappy, and we didn’t want to damage the solid relationship and friendship with the PASS Officials and racers, stated Therrien. We will however continue to present the Canaan Fair Speedway portion of the event with Monster Truck Mania, $1,000 to win for the Late Models, Pure Stocks, Bandits, Daredevils and Classic Lites, plus fireworks to cap off the evening. We will vary from our original schedule and produce a very solid night of racing, plus Monster Trucks and fireworks. Post time will still be 5pm.”

“Dick and I came to this agreement as the grounds are so saturated already and if we get the rain that they say we will this week it would turn into a real problem parking all the cars, as Dick’s weekly car counts are extremely solid, and things would be overflowing, commented Mayberry. We feel that this is in best interest of both programs.”

Polewarczyk Steals Victory at Canaan

CANAAN, NH — Hudson, NH’s Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., shocked reigning American Canadian Tour and Canaan Late Model Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., in the closing laps of the ACT 150 at Canaan Fair Speedway on Sunday, June 15, picking up his first ACT victory since October of 2011. Turner, ME’s Glen Luce completed the all-Ford podium.

Helliwell dominated for most of the race while engaging in a close battle with points leader Jimmy Hebert early on. Hebert looked stout in second place until a heart-breaking malfunction took him off the pace until a lap 22 caution flag allowed him to head down pit road. Hebert had already battled a fever earlier in the week, and a transmission failure in practice, as his team worked and got his car back out on the track.

Helliwell continued to fend off attempts from Luce and Milton, VT’s Brent Dragon as he endured 12 caution periods in the 150-lap event. Polewarczyk worked through the field methodically, climbing into the top five with 50 laps to go. As the end drew near, Polewarczyk turned it on in the high lane, charging into second place until a lap 131 caution flag set up the fight to the finish.

Jeremy Davis Claims Granite State Pro Stock Win at Canaan Fair Speedway

CANAAN, NH — “This is MY HOUSE” exclaimed a victorious Jeremy Davis after winning the Granite State Pro Stock 100 lap main event at Canaan Fair Speedway. The defending track champion used a late race restart to motor past Louie Mechalidas and work his way back to the top of the leader board.

Davis and Mike Parks brought the 22 car field down to the green, with Parks jumping out to the early lead. Davis settled into second, with Mechalidas behind in third. Using the outside lane, Davis worked past Parks and put the Dynasty machine to the top of the leaderboard. Mechalidas followed suit and settled into second just before the ¼ mark.

The duo pulled away from the rest of the pack opening a straightaway lead before the first caution came out on lap 40, when Jimmy Renfrew of Hookset, NH broke, and hit the front stretch wall. Once the field was bunched up, Lightning Lou jumped out front of Davis on the restart, and the pair continued to battle each other for the lead. As they crossed the half-way point, Mechalidas and Davis had started to put some distance between Parks, Babe Branscombe and Mike O’Sullivan.

Unbuckled: Getting To Know Wayne Helliwell, Jr.

Driver of the #27 E-Keys 4 Cars Ford

Hometown: Dover, NH

2012: Earned his first American Canadian Tour Championship

What are your favorite hobbies in the off-season?

I’m not sure I have any real hobbies; it’s a full-time job working in the garage. As a big family thing, we like to go out and try new random places to eat; stuff that’s way off the mark and just pretty different throughout New England. My job and racing bring me to a lot of different places, and many times we’ll just take off and try new stuff. I think you can find a lot of good places like that.

What do you do for work?

I am a fire-sprinkler system installer for Mammoth Fire Protection. This is the only job I’ve ever had. I’ve been working here since 1993, so about 20 years.

What is your biggest life accomplishment?

The things I’m most proud of are my three daughters. I was extremely young when I had my first daughter, I think I was 15 when the girl was pregnant, so that was a real life lesson. My daughter and I practically grew up together. There were a lot of things to learn as she grew and now that my daughters are almost adults, they are not only my children but really good friends as well. I never understood when my parents said the same thing about me, but now I do. They were young parents, too.
