Anderson Bounces Back from Early Weekend Issues in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, FL (Apr. 2, 2018) – Cole Anderson and his ATF & Gunslinger team bounced back from what could have been near disaster during the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series opener at Five Flags Speedway on Friday night. Ultimately, the driver of the No. 97 Toyota ended the evening credited with a tenth place finish.

For the first time this season, the team led by Dustin and Jamie Skinner unloaded their World Series-winning car to compete on the abrasive half-mile at Five Flags Speedway. Before they could get Cole up to speed, mechanical gremlins reared their ugly heads. Cole felt something wrong in the car and quickly slowed in an attempt to minimize the damage. By that point, the left rear hub assembly had already failed, disconnecting from the car and leaving Cole with only three wheels to limp back to the pit lane. The team spent the majority of practice tending to the issue and checking the rest of the car to avoid another potentially catastrophic failure.

Once the problem hub had been replaced and all other components inspected, Cole quickly rocketed to the top of the speed chart, proving the speed of his No. 97 Toyota once again. After a handful of small adjustments, he and the crew readied the machine for time trials where they missed the pole position by less than three-hundredths of a second.

Cole Anderson Looking Forward to Racing On Easter Weekend

NORTHFIELD, MN (Mar. 28, 2018) – For the first time in his racing career, Cole Anderson will be competing over Easter Weekend when he races this Friday night at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. He’ll once again be piloting a car prepared by the ATF & Gunslinger team in the first of many attempts at the half-mile speedway in Florida’s panhandle.

Two weeks ago, Anderson completed double duty as part of the Rattler Weekend in Opp, Alabama, where he ran both a super late model on Sunday and finished top ten in the pro late model event Saturday night despite a mechanical failure on the car. Cole will be racing the pro late model again this weekend in preparation for December’s Snowflake 100, arguably the most prestigious pro late model race of the year.

“We had a heim get bound up in the front end at Opp, so the suspension wasn’t able to move like it should,” Anderson explained of the effort in Alabama. “Knowing that, I think we’ll be good because our pro car usually hauls butt everywhere we go. We just have to qualify up front and run a steady race pace and not burn up the tires.”

Kyle Busch Wins 50th Annual Snowball Derby

Pensacola, FL — Even though in recent weeks there was a NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series championship up for grabs, the 50th Annual Snowball Derby was near the top of Kyle Busch’s wish list.

Busch poured over notes before arriving at Five Flags Speedway on Friday, fresh off the NASCAR Banquet in Las Vegas. He hopped in the car for practice and immediately liked the piece he had.

A few small tweaks later, and a winning car was born, allowing the 2009 race winner to capitalize late and earn the coveted Tom Dawson Trophy.

“I didn’t think we had it there for about 280 laps, and then that final 20 she came to life,” Busch admitted to Speed51.com powered by JEGS.

Chase Purdy Impresses with Top Ten Run in his First Snowball Derby

PENSACOLA, FL (December 4, 2017) – Anthony Campi Racing and Chase Purdy ran their first Snowball Derby together on Sunday at Five Flags Speedway, finishing eighth. It was not only their first attempt at the event together, but their pairing’s first race of any kind together heading into their 2018 season.

Purdy was fast all week in practice, consistently laying down laps in the top ten of practice times during each session. Friday’s qualifying session, often referred to as the most intense and stressful in all of short track racing, proved Purdy’s times were no fluke. The Mississippi native piloted the No. 81 Toyota to the sixth starting spot, making his task for Sunday much easier.

Once the green flag flew on the 300-lap feature, Purdy settled into a comfortable spot within the top ten. As the laps clicked off, his Toyota slowly came to life as other cars began to lose balance and wear their tires. Throughout various pit stop cycles, Chase and the ACR crew were fighting their own handling quirks and working to improve their car.

Plott Brothers Ready to Tackle 50th Annual Snowball Derby

Pensacola, FL — The Snowball Derby has long been a race that has brought families together for a week at Five Flags Speedway (FL). For 2017, the list of families includes the Plott family, with brothers Kason and Kyle Plott both searching for success in the 50th Annual Snowball Derby.

While Kyle has competed in the Snowball Derby on three previous occasions, younger brother Kason will be making his debut this weekend.

So far, the 2017 season has been an important one for Kyle as he completed his first full-time campaign with the Southern Super Series. This week, he looks to take a great learning season and turn it into a career-best finish at the Snowball Derby, where he had a top-five qualifying effort in 2016.

SARASOTA, FL (November 27, 2017) – Following a successful test, Chase Purdy and Anthony Campi Racing have moved up the beginning of their partnership in order to compete in the 2017 Snowball Derby this weekend. The pairing was originally set to compete in 2018 but have accelerated their plans after strong positive feedback from both driver and team.

Purdy and Campi tested at Five Flags Speedway prior to the massive test days which precede the Snowball each year. The team had the track to themselves and quickly got up to speed at the facility, one of Chase’s favorites.

“I’m so ready for the Snowball to be here,” Purdy said. “I’m really excited about the Derby and I feel like we’ll have a really fast car with our ACR debut. I really love Pensacola’s racetrack, it’s fun and fast and creates some good racing.

Williams Hoping to Cap Off Big Season with Snowflake Victory

Sellersburg, IN — Cole Williams has had a year full of big victories. Now he’s heading down to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida hoping to cap off his 2017 season with one more big win in the Allen Turner Snowflake 100.
Williams scored a win in the Pro Late Model portion of the inaugural Short Track U.S. Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway in May. “The Snowflake is such a prestigious Pro Late Model race,” said Williams.  “It would be awesome to win this race, especially since it is the last race for our year. Hopefully we can get the job done for our team and for Cardinal Services and Bordeau Metals who have been so supportive all year for us.”

The 21-year-old driver from Sellersburg, Indiana had been out of a race car for almost two months as his last race was the All-American 400 at the Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville on October 1.

Kyle Busch Returning to Five Flags for 50th Annual Snowball Derby

Pensacola, FL — One of NASCAR’s biggest stars will be making his way back to Pensacola, Florida’s Five Flags Speedway this December.  2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch has filed an official entry for the 50th Annual Snowball Derby. The Las Vegas, Nevada driver will pilot the No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota for 300 laps around the historic half-mile oval on Sunday, December 3, 2017.

“The Snowball Derby is the biggest race in the Late Model industry and with this year being the 50th annual event I feel like it’s going to be extra special,” Busch said.  “Tim Bryant and all of his staff, as well as everyone at Speed 51, they always do such a great job promoting this event and the fans always turnout because the racing is exciting.”

Busch has fielded entries as a car owner in recent years for drivers such as 2013 race winner Erik Jones and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Christopher Bell.  This year, with the NASCAR banquet in Las Vegas being changed to an earlier date, the schedule will allow the 2009 Snowball Derby champion to take another serious run at Super Late Model racing’s biggest prize.

Snowball Derby “King” Bickle Heading Back for 50th Running

Pensacola, FL – Rich Bickle is the most decorated driver in the history of the Snowball Derby. Bickle leads all drivers with five career wins in the “granddaddy of all short track races,” but he hasn’t been back to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida since he finished second in 2002. Now, for the 50th Annual Snowball Derby, the “Snowball Derby King” is headed back to Pensacola in search of his sixth Tom Dawson Trophy.

During the 1990’s, no driver was more dominant at the historic Florida half-mile than Bickle. In addition to his five victories (1990, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999), Bickle had an average finish of 8.4. His lowest finish was 36th in 1992, but that was due to an engine failure.

Even the first year Bickle went to Pensacola in 1989 he almost won the race. He finished a close second to Rick Crawford.

Bromante Continues his Momentum Despite Flat Tire, Finishes Top Ten at Pensacola

PENSACOLA, FL (Sept. 25, 2017) – New York native Giovanni Bromante traveled to the Sunshine State over the weekend to compete in the Allen Turner Warm Up 100, the final pro late model race at Five Flags Speedway prior to the prestigious Snowflake 100. At the conclusion of 100 laps, Bromante finished tenth in his first trip to Pensacola.

Bromante spent hundreds, if not thousands, of laps on his iRacing simulator at Five Flags prior to climbing into the real car on Friday and the laps paid off. Quickly, he was able to get up to speed and began to give the crew feedback on the car’s handling, gradually improving it over the course of the afternoon.

By the time qualifying rolled around, Giovanni was within a quarter second of the pole time and felt confident for the race since he and the David Gilliland Racing team worked primarily on race runs during the day with older tires. From tenth place, he began his first race at the storied half-mile in pursuit of another top five finish, much like he did at Montgomery two weeks prior.

Pensacola, Fla. — A champion was crowned Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway (FL).

Pollard in a League of His Own at Five Flags

Pensacola, Fla. — Five Flags Speedway (FL) hosted its third Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco event of the 2017 season Friday night. A talented field of 25 Super Late Model drivers made their way to the Pensacola half-mile oval, but at the end of the night it was one driver in a league of his own.
Bubba Pollard made the 125-lap race look easy as he cruised under the checkered flag, claiming his 15th career Southern Super Series win. Pollard took over the lead just before the race reached the halfway mark and never bothered looking back.

“This is actually a different race car than what we’ve been racing all year,” Pollard said. “It just goes to show you that we have good race cars. We’ve just got a really good piece right now.”

One late-race caution on lap 90 erased the gap between first and second, threatening to end Pollard’s dominating performance. Donnie Wilson would have a chance steal back the lead from Pollard as the two restarted side-by-side. The ten-lap shootout proved to be more of the same, however, as Pollard got the jump, once again running away with the show.

“I know it wasn’t the most exciting race, but I appreciate all the fans coming out,” Pollard said to a crowd of cheers. “It’s great to see this many people and I can’t thank them enough.”

Kyle Plott Stays Consistent at Five Flags; Looks Forward to Anderson

Pensacola, Florida – Kyle Plott entered Friday’s Southern Super Series race at Five Flags Speedway (FL) looking to make gains in the championship hunt. At the end of the day, Plott did just that by continuing his consistent start to the season with another top-10 finish.

Plott qualified just outside of the top 10 and started the race at Five Flags Speedway (FL) from the 11th spot. By surviving a race of attrition and keeping his nose clean, the young driver found himself tucked in the ninth position when the checkered flag was waved.

While he was able to gain points on his competition, Plott was still left wanting more at the end of the night.

Pollard Ends Drought with SSS Victory at Five Flags

Pensacola, Fla. — Twenty-seven cars were in attendance at Five Flags Speedway (FL) Friday night to kick off the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco doubleheader weekend. Bubba Pollard dominated the latter half of the 100-lap event before parking his No. 26 machine in familiar territory: Blizzard Series victory lane.

This win has been long anticipated for Pollard who has suffered from an unusual drought throughout the early part of the 2017 season. His only victory had been the Red-Eye 100, a January race at New Smyrna Speedway (FL).

Pollard acknowledged the difficulties his team has been having and the impact it’s had on all of them.

Gulf Coast Bonus Bucks on the Line for So. Super Series Drivers

Pensacola, Florida – Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco racers making their way to the Gulf Coast for a doubleheader weekend on April 28-29 will have 1,000 extra reasons to finish well. Series promoter Tim Bryant has announced that there will be a $1,000 bonus on the line for the driver recording the best average finish at Five Flags Speedway (FL) and Mobile International Speedway (AL).

The doubleheader weekend will kick off on Friday, April 28 in Pensacola, Florida with 100 laps of racing at Five Flags. Racers will then make the trip to nearby Irvington, Alabama for a 95-lap affair at Mobile.

“With this being the only doubleheader on the Southern Super series schedule this year, the Gulf Coast Bonus Bucks will be a little extra incentive for the teams to compete for,” said Southern Super Series Director Tim Bryant. “While most Bonus programs are designated for the winners, this $1,000 cash award is just as likely to go to a guy who doesn’t win either night.”

Cole Williams Begins New Challenge Friday at Five Flags

Pensacola, FL — Cole Williams of Borden, Indiana has his sights set on a new challenge in 2017, and that new challenge begins this weekend at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. The 21-year-old Late Model driver has plans to contend for the championship in the track’s competitive Allen Turner Pro Late Model division.

“If everything goes well, if it ends up going perfect we will see. Right now, we are planning on running every race. If we can keep the car in one piece and everything is going well, then yeah, maybe,” Williams said.

Williams and his team are coming off of a championship season in which they captured the Pro Late Model championship at the Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville (TN). Despite that, the former Lebanon I-44 Speedway (MO) track champion enters a new championship chase slightly behind his competition when it comes to experience at the historic half-mile speedway.

Cole Williams Starts 2017 off in Style at SpeedFest

IN — Cole Williams showed he was a driver to be reckoned with in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour portion of SpeedFest Sunday at Crisp Motorsports Park (GA). Despite a limited schedule in 2016, the New Albany, Indiana driver brought home a second-place finish in his first race of the year.

Williams put down the second fastest lap in qualifying Saturday and raced around the top five for much of the 125-lap Pro Late Model race on Sunday. With just over 20 laps to go, the 20-year-old driver made his way into the third position and then battled hard with Chandler Smith for the second spot over the closing laps. Williams took the second position with 14 laps to go and held on for a career-best JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour finish.

“Overall it was a good weekend for us,” Williams said. “It was kind of up and down in the race and we were struggling with a tight car off and it really hurt us on restarts. I kept getting put on the inside and it would freight train us more and more. There were some restarts here and there I got hurt with three wide, but we ended up having a really good car at the end. I got cleared from the inside to be able to dart down and race for second with Chandler (Smith). Had a heck of a race with them and we ended up finishing second, so I can’t complain at all.”
