Oswego, NY (January 23, 2013) – While the northeast is locked in a bitter cold winter, it’s a great time to look toward the 2013 racing series as a warm-up. The 2013 ISMA schedule has been finalized with some exciting new additions. The ISMA winged series will compete in 15 race events at 10 different speedways in the Northeast and Canada. And, one of those Canadian visits includes a new venue, Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario, which is approximately 40 miles north of Toronto.
ISMA’s opener will be at the home of the supermodifieds, the Oswego Speedway (NY), which in 2013 will host four big events called the Steel Palace ISMA SuperSeries. Round 1 is May 4th. Rounds 2 – 4 come on June 8th, July 13th (King of Wings) and on August 31st of Classic weekend.
ISMA’s first trip to Canada is a return to Autodrome Chaudiere in Vallee Jonction, Quebec for a two-day event on June 21 and 22. Johnny Benson won the inaugural race at that fast semi-banked oval in 2011. Mike Lichty, Benson’s teammate and Rob Summers were on the podium for that 75-lapper. Both Friday and Saturday features will again be 75 laps in length.

Sandusky, OH — Ohio’s Bob Dawson has been racing a long time and has achieved a lot of things during that long career, but he couldn’t have picked a better time to win his first ISMA race than on Friday night. It was a race dedicated to the memory of his car owner’s father Don Reed and to track owner Kevin Jaycox’ dad Ralph. For Bob the win made up for a less than stellar season thus far. Dawson led from start to finish in the 50-lap main and fended off some serious challenges for the win.
Said an emotionally charged Dawson in victory lane, “This makes up for the rough year we’ve had. It makes up for everything. This win is for the whole Reed family. The whole crew has had a rough year but you know what – this makes up for a lot right here. I had some challenges during the race but they had to come and get it. It was there but they couldn’t do it. We finished third last year. We finished second in an ISMA race. We had some feature wins with MSA last year. But, this one tops all of that and it was on Don Reed Memorial night which is very special. I can’t thank the Reed family enough for what they do for us. This is a big team effort and it’s a big team. This feels good when we’re all out here on the front straightaway like this.”
Finishing in second was another Ohioan Dave Shullick Jr. who was pleased with his run also. “This was a good run. What can I say – ISMA, I love running with them. Every car here is a high caliber car. It’s great racing with them. And, every time they come, I thank them for coming. And, thanks to all the fans who came. We couldn’t do this without you.”

Sandusky, OH — London, Ontario’s Mark Sammut finally won his first and second winged ISMA features in 2009 after more than a decade of trying. He finished runner-up in ISMA points at year’s end. But, 2010 had not gone as well as the 78 team would have liked. In the first five races of the ISMA season, their best finish had been a sixth, that is until Saturday night’s 33rd annual Hy-Miler Nationals at Sandusky Speedway. Sammut took the early lead, lost it to fellow Canadian Mike Lichty and then quietly stayed with the 84 until he was ready to reclaim the point. On lap 77 Sammut pulled alongside Lichty. The duo ran side by side until turn four when Sammut plucked the Hy-Miler prize. It was Sammut’s race to lose now, and for the final 22 laps he held on for the biggest win of his supermodified career. He also became only the second Canadian to win the prestigious Hy-Miler race; the first being Dave McKnight in 2001. Sammut recapped his road to victory.
“This is something. We had a really bad car all weekend long. We kept messing with it and messing with it. Finally before time trials today we thought it was coming around so we just pushed it a bit in that direction. We had a decent run in time trials. We had a decent run in the heat. I knew then that if we could stick with it we’d have a good car at the end of 100 laps. And we did. It was great.
“I had a touch more when Mike went by me. I knew I couldn’t go that pace and have anything left at the end so I just kind of let him go. I was just hoping I’d get some breaks and get back to him. If we didn’t, there was nothing I could do about it. As it turned out it worked out perfect. We were right where we wanted to be at the end of the race!

Sandusky Oh – No supermodified driver had ever won four-straight Sandusky Hy-Miler 100s going into the 32nd running of the prestigious event Saturday night. Chris Perley now had the chance but also had his doubts. A sixth place finish in Friday night’s Fast 40, made him more uncertain that he could be the first 4-time consecutive winner. He wasn’t the fastest in time trials Saturday. He finished second in his heat. The Vic Miller crew set to work to make the car right. It was about halfway into the race that Perley knew he had a chance. Later that night he stood in victory lane with his fourth Hy-Miler trophy, the doubts erased. The Rowley, Mass. driver had received a call on Friday that his maternal grandmother had passed away in Florida after a bout with cancer. He chose to dedicate his record-breaking win to his “Nana.”
Said Perley in victory lane, “This is amazing. We were a little off yesterday. We worked on it today and made some changes. The crew is pretty sharp. I didn’t think we had the car tonight. I didn’t want to get down and disappoint the crew. By halfway I knew we had a pretty good car to win. It’s just unbelievable. It shows how good this crew is. I was happy to put on a show for the fans. It was kind of drawn out with the reds but it was a blast. It was fun partying. This place is great. This place is my favorite track. I would never have believed yesterday that I would have been here today.”

Sandusky, OH – History repeated itself Friday night at Sandusky Speedway when Randy Burch took home his first-ever ISMA feature win repeating what Charlie Schultz had done in 2008. Burch, who started 4th in the 27-car stellar field of supermodifieds, grabbed the lead on lap 9 and took the Steve Stout 49 home to victory 31 laps later. Burch pulled away from the field but his nearest challenger, Dave Shullick Jr., slowly reeled in the leader toward race end with lap traffic playing a critical role. Schultz got into the mix to make things very interesting. At the end the top 3 hailed from the “Buckeye” State much to the delight of the record-breaking crowd on hand who stayed despite the past-midnight start.
Said Burch, surrounded by the large Stout crew in victory lane, “I figured Shullick would be coming. I didn’t know how close he was. I figured there were a couple other guys out there when I ran into lap traffic. And, then I realized they weren’t there. Tomorrow’s the big one. And, tonight I thought I might take it easy, but with 40 laps you just have to go. With the guys out there tonight, it was a real honor to win. These guys out here tonight are real great. It’s great that the fans stayed. It was a long night. Hopefully, we get some good weather tomorrow and get the race in. This is a great night for our team.
