USAC Sophomore Carrick Prepared for 2nd Season Starting this Saturday at Du Quoin

Du Quoin, Illinois………Sophomore sensation or sophomore slump are the two avenues that a driver can take after a successful Rookie campaign.  For as many success stories as there are in a driver’s second year of USAC P1 Insurance National Midget competition, there are many who weren’t able to break into victory lane.
Lincoln, California’s Tanner Carrick, the 2017 series Rookie of the Year, aims to be the sensation in 2018 when the season begins this Saturday, March 10 at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin.
Since the inception of the USAC National Midget Rookie of the Year award in 1969, there have been 14 drivers who have earned a victory in the year following their recognition as the top first-year driver.  Drivers such as Tommy Astone (1973), Bobby East (2002) and Bryan Clauson (2007) have earned three in their sophomore year, Billy Engelhart (1970), Larry Patton (1976) and Kevin Thomas, Jr. (2015) with two apiece and Russ Gamester (1985), Darren Hagen (2006) and Spencer Bayston (2016) with one each.

Du Quoin, Illinois………A “Turkey Night Grand Prix” winner, an Indiana Sprint Week feature winner and an All Star Circuit of Champions feature winner are among the latest of 38 entries, thus far, for the Saturday, December 16th “Junior Knepper 55” USAC Midget special event at the Southern Illinois Center.

Billy Wease, the 2006 “Turkey Night” winner, finished 9th at Du Quoin in March’s “Shamrock Classic.” The Noblesville, Ind. driver has entered for the indoor dirt race in Amanda Wease’s No. 12w.  Brent Beauchamp has filed his entry to pilot his own No. 11 at the “Knepper 55.” Beauchamp was a 5th place finisher at Du Quoin in March and has been strong on the tough, local Indiana bullring scene in a sprint car where he is a two-time Lincoln Park Speedway champion (2012 & 2017) and captured an Indiana Sprint Week feature win at Bloomington (Ind.) Briscoe & Cottle Headline Early “Knepper 55” USAC Midget Entries

Du Quoin, Illinois………Racing champions Chase Briscoe and Shane Cottle are among the 30, thus far, early entries for the Saturday, December 16th “Junior Knepper 55” USAC Midget special event at the Southern Illinois Center.

Briscoe, of Mitchell, Indiana, is the 2016 ARCA champ and recently wrapped up NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors and his first series win in the finale at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway in November. Briscoe is certainly no rookie when it comes to open wheel dirt track racing where he cut his teeth before moving into the NASCAR ranks. Briscoe made his midget racing debut at the “Knepper 55” one year ago, finishing 17th. Briscoe will compete in his own No. 5 in his second “Knepper 55” appearance.

Two-time Indiana Midget Week champ and four-time Kokomo Speedway titlist Shane Cottle has entered the event for a team fielded by Daryl Saucier and Shane Hmiel. It was with Saucier for whom Cottle won his two most recent USAC Midget features, back in 2007 at Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway and in 2010 at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway. In March of 2016 at the Southern Illinois Center, Cottle, of Kokomo, Ind., led 28 laps and finished second at the “Shamrock Classic” drivng for Hmiel.

Grant Gets USAC National Midget Win #1 at Shamrock Classic

Du Quoin, Illinois………Thus far, USAC’s 2017 season has already become the year of Justin Grant.

The record books were rewritten in Saturday night’s “Shamrock Classic” USAC Midget National Championship season-opener at the Southern Illinois Center as Grant became the first driver in the 62-year history of the organization to record season-opening feature victories in both the National Sprint and National Midget divisions in a single year.

Now, the Ione, California driver finds himself in an envious early-season position: sitting atop the standings in both the USAC National Sprint and National Midget series. It’s a remarkable accomplishment for Grant, a driver who readily admits that his racing career was floundering less than a year ago.

Thorson Eyes Repeat of USAC Midget Title Season in 2017

In the 61-year history of the United States Auto Club, repeating as a national series champion has proven to be one of the ultimate litmus tests of determining the greats in the sport. Though, certainly not unprecedented in the history of the series, the list of drivers who have repeated as a USAC National Midget is chock full of drivers who defined their eras.

In 2017, Tanner Thorson has an opportunity to take a big step toward joining that list that includes a variety of established hall of famers and future hall of famers, among them are Shorty Templeman, Jimmy Davies, Mike McGreevy, Mel Kenyon, Sleepy Tripp, Stevie Reeves, Tony Stewart, Jason Leffler, Dave Darland, Jerry Coons, Jr. and the most recent back-to-back series champ Bryan Clauson in 2010 and 2011.

Thorson will begin his fifth season with the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports team in 2017 this Saturday, March 18 at the second running of the “Shamrock Classic,” held indoors at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin. As the most experienced member of the team, Thorson has seen much of what the series calendar has to offer, which lends an advantage to the Minden, Nevada driver. Yet, with a stacked field of competitors returning for a title run this season, the competition will be stiff and the challenge grand in becoming the 12th driver to accomplish the feat.

The two most recent USAC Midget winners at the Southern Illinois Center have signed on to compete for the Clauson/Marshall Racing team at Du Quoin. Fremont, California’s Shane Golobic will attempt to defend his “Shamrock Classic” victory in the CMR/Matt Wood Racing No. 17w. Indianapolis, Indiana’s Tyler Courtney, a Southern Illinois Center winner in last December’s “Junior Knepper 55,” will pilot the CMR No. 7BC. Filling out the CMR stable is current USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car point leader Justin Grant who won last Friday’s Sprint season opener in Ocala, Florida. The Ione, California native won his first ever start in the CMR No. 39BC in a Chili Bowl preliminary night feature in January.

In addition, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon is back in the saddle of the FMR No. 76m for the 2017 USAC season. The two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ, won last season’s “Jason Leffler Memorial” in Wayne City, Ill. and finished third in series points.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2016 — Du Quoin, Illinois — Six years ago, Tyler Courtney was a newcomer to the midget racing scene when he made his debut at the first full midget race ever held at the Southern Illinois Center.

Stenhouse Steals “Junior Knepper 55” Glory from Car Owner Clauson

Du Quoin, Illinois — Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. conjured memories of his breakout 2007 USAC season, as the Olive Branch, Mississippi driver returned to midget racing on Saturday night and passed Bryan Clauson with three laps to go for the win in the inaugural “Junior Knepper 55” USAC Midget special event at the Southern Illinois Center. Stenhouse was caught up in a lap-one logjam but recovered after restarting the event in the 20th and last position before making his way forward to the $3,000 payday.

After heat races and qualifying races accumulated finish and passing points to set feature lineups, Bryan Clauson earned the pole, but fellow front-row starter Tyler Thomas looped his mount in turn-one to set off the six-car stack-up. All six cars were able to restart.

Clauson led early and encountered the tail of the field on lap six, but that was no deterrent. Behind him, Joey Saldana worked to the inside of Chase Briscoe on lap nine to take the second spot. The pace was fast at the front, with the first half of the race clicking off with just one caution.
