Scally, Zych Rocket to Wiscasset, Ames True Value NEMA Wins

Picture perfect skies welcomed the Northeastern Midget Association to Wiscasset Speedway in Wiscasset, Maine this past weekend. An unbelievable, packed house was on hand as well, with eager fans filling every spot in the parking lot to greet the fastest winged midgets in the world.

When the double checkered flags flew at the end of the evening, the most talked about story in the pits was Paul Scally’s first NEMA win, breaking a long overdue streak for the family owned team, taking down the win in the Lites class. In the NEMA feature, John Zych proved he was the class of the field all day, coming from mid pack for a dominant victory.

In the Lites division, Scally jumped out into an early lead. Fast right from the start of the day, he paced the field, setting some of the quickest laps of the feature event. Behind Scally, youngsters Ryan Locke and Ben Mikitarian were putting on a show for the second spot, and further back, Danny Cugini was slicing his way through the pack from deep in the field.

Bertrand, Stergios Take Down AMES True Value Night Wins at Wiscasset

Todd Bertrand beat back two-time champion John Zych Jr. on a restart with six laps to go to take down an impressive victory at Wiscasset Speedway this past Saturday night.  In the Lites division, PJ Stergios romped through the field, and lapped all the way up to right outside of the top five, taking down an impressive NEMA Lites victory.

The evening started with time trials for the NEMA midgets.  Randy Cabral set a blistering pace with a 13.050-second lap, one 100th off of John Zych Jr’s track record of 13.040 set earlier this season.  Zych was second, followed by Avery Stoehr.  An 8 car invert would start the three at the top of the points standings toward the rear of the field.  Coming into the event, Zych had a mere 13 point lead over five-time Champion, Cabral.

Paul Scally in the Earth Movers #30 and Todd Bertrand in the K&N Engineering #74 brought the field to the green flag.  Bertrand quickly jumped out into the lead.  He quickly stretched out his lead to ten car lengths, but further back, John Zych Jr. was slicing through the field from his sixth starting spot, taking over the second position on the fourth lap from Alan Chambers.  Zych quickly went to work, and started to narrow Bertrand’s lead to six car lengths at the halfway point, and at this point, five-time champion, Randy Cabral, had worked his way to third.

An event that Alexander is looking forward to is the debut of the Granite State Pro Stock Series coming to Maine at Wiscasset on Labor Day weekend. “ Yes, I am definitely excited about Granite State coming to my home track. That is always an advantage to a driver. There aren’t too many tracks we will be running that I haven’t been on before but we are toying with the idea of running a race with PASS South and also there will be a couple new tracks we will hit with Granite State.” Alexander Said

Cugini Nabs First NEMA Win, R. Bigelow Take Down Big Wiscasset Lites Victory

Bridgewater, MA — The Wiscasset Speedway put together a blockbuster evening for NEMA this past Saturday night, with packed stands, and fans eagerly awaiting the return of the Winged Warriors. At the end of the evening, a very happy Danny Cugini took down his first ever NEMA victory over five time champion Randy Cabral, and Ryan Bigelow took down the Lites victory.

In the NEMA feature, veteran Paul Scally took off from the pole position. Scally looked extremely strong, stretching his lead out to ten car lengths over the first half of the race. Behind him, Danny Cugini had worked his way up to second, but had not challenged Scally at that point. Randy Cabral had worked his way by John Zych for third, by the halfway point.

With eight laps remaining, Scally, who was over heating at the time, had his worst nightmare come true – a caution for a spin by Matt O’Brien. On the restart, Cugini powered by Scally to take the lead, and Cabral quickly got by for second.

Mathew Bourgoine Returns to Victory Lane at Wiscasset

Although it’s hard for some to believe that the Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour has already entered its third month of racing in 2015, it is a testament that time really does fly when you’re having fun! The convoy of car haulers, accompanied by their crew and drivers, rolled into the pits of Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday, for race #5 of the season. With 15 cars on hand, the Tour looked to start off June with some exciting racing for the spectators to enjoy!  Picture perfect weather graced the coastal Maine area for the evening, as hundreds embraced the chance to come out and spend some time at the track!

The first heat race of the night, consisting of all the top drivers in the points standings, was paced by the 70 of Tylar Braunschweig, alongside the Racin’ Realtor Ed Getty in the 10. Braunschweig took the lead right away as Getty squeezed in front of Terry Kirk in the 17 to hold down the second spot. The 38 of three-time and defending Tour Champion Mathew Bourgoine was a man on a mission, using the outside line to power past several cars en route to the second spot. Some fierce racing and position swapping went on from 1st to last place, but it was Braunschweig in the Wedgewood Motorsports entry, holding off Bourgoine for his second heat win of 2015.  Ed Getty held off a flurry of challenges from the 84 of Matt Grant and the 19 of Kevin Girard Jr. in a near 3-wide finish for the third spot in the caution-free event.

The second heat was headed up by Buckshot Brackett in the 00 and the 8 of NELCAR Vice President Matt Chagnot. Brackett jumped out to the lead in his cherry red Ford sedan and showed the eight car pack the way, until a caution fell on lap 6 for a spin by the 72 of Mike Humphrey. When racing got back to green, it was Brackett still on point, but it was short-lived, as the 17 year old South Portland driver was black flagged for a heavy oil leak, ending a bid for his first career heat win, and effectively ending his night of racing. Bob Weymouth in the 399 inherited the lead from Brackett, and took off from the pack. Chagnot and the 29 of rookie of the year contender Austin Teras battled hard for the second spot in the very entertaining 10-lapper. At the checkers, it was all Weymouth, as the defending Golden Masters Asphalt National Champion grabbed his second heat win in as many weeks. Chagnot hung on to bring home P2 in the Hooligan Motorsports ride, and Teras continued to impress with a solid third place effort.

Winter Returns to Pro Series at Beech Ridge

Dan Winter of Windham, NH will run in the Pro Series at Beech Ridge (ME) Motor Speedway in a former Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. Super Late Model. Vulc-Tech Tire and Auto Repair of Hudson, NH will sponsor his full-time effort. Winter felt that finding sponsorship has been extremely difficult. He has sent 70 proposals since August. Winter has sold 25 squares on the back of the car for $20 each.

Depending on how the season goes, Winter may enter a Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Model or  Granite State Pro Stock Series race.

With the growth of the Pro Series at Beech Ridge, the division has had some great competition. Winter is looking forward to racing with drivers like defending champion Dave Farrington, Jr., Dan McKeage, Kelly Moore, and John Peters. His goals for the season are to win Rookie of the Year and to get top 15 finishes, and maybe top five.

Alexander Seeking First Wiscasset Pro Stock Win

Ellsworth Teenager to Enter Touring Series Events

Wyatt Alexander of Ellsworth, ME will begin his season at Wiscasset (ME) Speedway’s season opener on Saturday April 18.  Alexander’s goals are to compete for wins at Wiscasset and get a top ten and at least one top five in the Pro All Star Series (PASS) North Super Late Models or the Granite State Pro Stock Series.

“I think our best shot at something like that would be the PASS races at Speedway 95 (in Hermon, ME on June 14). It’s a track I am familiar with and there aren’t as many cars when we go there. But overall we are just learning to learn as much as possible and get some good experience moving forward.”

The No. 96 K&B Automotive team will enter additional races depending on how the season at Wiscasset is going. If Alexander feels ready and is comfortable, he will then run other races.  Granite State Pro Stock Series for Alexander may include Lee, Hudson, Star twice, and White Mountain. Alexander is looking at PASS races at Oxford, Spud Qualifier, the Oxford 250, and NHMS as well.

NEMA Releases Preliminary 2015 Schedule

BROCKTON, Mass. — Established haunts make up the 2015 Northeastern Midget Association schedule, including a return to White Mountain Motorsports Park for the Jim O’Brien Memorial race after an absence of many years and the season opener at Evans Mills Motorsports Park on May 23rd.

As NEMA President Russ Stoehr puts the finishing touches on the final schedule, there are 12 races currently on the NEMA agenda while the NEMA Lites will make 12 stops in what will be the club’s 63rd consecutive season, making it New England’s oldest sanctioning body. There is a possibility additional races will be added to one or both schedules at a later date.

Randy Cabral and owner Tim Bertrand will begin defense of their NEMA championships and the Lites will begin their eighth season at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, as they present The ICEBREAKER on April 11th and 12th. Scott Bigelow will begin defense of his Lites owner’s crown, and there will be a new Lites driver’s champion this year as Ryan Krachun will not be returning to the series in 2015.

Peters Ready for Sophomore Season

John Peters will begin his second season in the Pro Series division at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, ME.

Last season, Peters got to race against his three favorite drivers David Oliver, Dan McKeage, and Bill Rodgers. “I’ve been fortunate enough in my one season in the Pro Series to have had close-quarters racing with those particular guys, which has already been pretty neat,” Peters said.

Peters would tell you that his rookie year certainly came with its share of tribulations. “We came out of the box pretty solid and were competitive on opening night, especially before we got caught up in a wreck, which happened quite a bit with six DNFs. Fortunately the accidents that took us out of races weren’t of our doing, just products of jam packed short track racing.”

NEMA General Membership Meeting Cites Strong Progress for 2015

Thompson, CT — NEMA held its annual membership meeting this past Sunday at the Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park clubhouse, with a strong showing of general members present. At the top of the agenda was a preview into the 2015 schedule, which will feature 3 events at Thompson, as well as events at Oswego, Seekonk, Monadnock, Evans Mills, Wiscasset, Lee USA and White Mountain – with tentative dates held for Waterford Speedbowl, Twin State, and Chemung, NY.

The club also elected a new President for the first time in over ten years – with Russ Stoehr running unopposed to take over the top seat in NEMA. Mike McCarthy and Mike Chambers were elected to the Vice President spots, Joe Santa Maria as Secretary and Paul Scally returns as Treasurer. A new Board was also elected with Tim Bertrand, Shawn Torrey, Paul Bigelow, Randy Cabral, Mike Scrivani and Dennis O’Brien taking over those seats.

The club also made additional major strides to help increase its membership base including the development of a Rookie Development program. Under this program, the club will secure track time for new drivers joining the NEMA Lite ranks to practice with the club, particularly noted – 12 and 13 year old drivers will be able to participate in the program. In addition, any driver that turns 13 during the competition season who has prior experience, that has passed the Rookie Development Program and has approval by the Board may compete with the Lite series. The minimum age for NEMA was also lowered to 15 years old with prior experience and Board approval.

Fall Fury at Wiscasset Speedway Wraps Up Season

WISCASSET, ME — Wiscasset Speedway ended its 2014 season with Fall Fury last Saturday. Although the skies were overcast and threatening rain, track officials were able to squeeze in most of the scheduled races for the gathered fans to enjoy. On the agenda were Wicked Good Vintage Racers, Outlaw Mini, Prostock, New England Four Cylinder Prostock, Modified, Strictly Street, Mini Trucks, and Thunder 4’s. A Late Model Sportsman and a Napa Super Street feature had to be cancelled at the end of the night because the showers that had threatened began to move in.

An end of season celebration was held at the track after the races, in the sprinkling rain. Barbarian BBQ had set up, preparing food during race time. All track staff, drivers and their crews and families, and fans gathered on the concourse and enjoyed a meal and watched as track owners, Rich and Vanessa Jordan, along with track promoter, Ken Minott, presented awards to drivers, their crews, and Speedway staff. Trophies were awarded to division champs. In all divisions there were hard luck awards, Sportsmanship awards, and awards for most improved. For a complete list of awards that were given out on Fall Fury, please visit the website.

A Wicked Good Vintage Racers feature was the first crowd pleaser. The Wicked Good Vintage Racers visit tracks in the Northeast and race with cars from the past. Coming in first in the feature was the # 3 of David Pierce. Placing second was Bob Guyon of the #13. Rounding out the top three was the #64 of Scott Tucker in third.

Champs Deliver in Style at Wiscasset Speedway

WISCASSET, ME — Division titles were on the line last Saturday night at Wiscasset Speedway, and the champs rose to the occasion.  Point leaders Adam Chadbourne of the NAPA Super Street division, Nick Hinkley of the Late Model Sportsman class, Ryan Chadwick of the Thunder 4 division, and Jerry McKenna of the Mini Trucks were all on hand to defend their lead and to bring the championship home.  The weather was warm and pleasant.  The crowd cheered on their favorite drivers and watched as three of the four point leaders won their division races.  Wrapping up the night was a one hundred lap Enduro.

The spotlighted race of the week was a thirty-five lap NAPA Super Street feature.  Heading into the last point race, Adam Chadbourne of the #1 had only a six point lead over James Osmond of the #05.  Prior to race time Osmond said, “Chadbourne has dominated in this division, and his car is fast today. I would need to beat him by four positions for me to win the championship. We will have to see what happens.”

Chadbourne said, “I think if the car stays together we will be all set and win this championship.  If we win the championship we will deserve it, because no crew has worked harder than mine keeping this car together all season.”

Corey Morgan is the Top Gun at Wiscasset Speedway

WISCASSET, ME — Last Saturday the Wiscasset Speedway presented a jam-packed show including the second annual “Top Gun Strictly Shootout” presented by McKeage’s Top Gun Construction, the Amsoil Nelcar Legends, and division racing with Prostock, Outlaw Mini, and New England Four Cylinder Prostock. The grandstands were packed, and the weather was cool and pleasant. There were numerous giveaways, including bicycles for the kids. During intermission Joe Pastori, a driver who drives in Pass Sportsman and Prostock divisions, performed stunts on the racetrack to entertain the crowd. Additionally, Dan Brown was awarded the Four Seasons Synthetic Oil Driver of the Month for the month of August.

The Spotlighted feature of the night was the forty lap Top Gun Strictly Shootout. Thirty-six cars competed in three heat races and one consolation race to determine position. The top twenty-one in the field were inverted for starting position. Ultimately thirty-three cars participated in the shootout. Starting on the pole was the # 3 of Mike Short. Behind him were the #2 of Josh Bailey and the #42 of Johnny Wolfe. During the opening lap, the #40 of Mac Hannon Jr. passed both Wolfe and Bailey for second place. The #82 of Chaz Briggs, who started in seventh, headed to the inside during lap two and passed Bailey on turn three for third.

There was a caution during lap six, and when racing action resumed on the track, Briggs once again took the inside line and passed Hannon for second. There was a second caution during lap seven and on the restart the #81 of Lewis Anderson passed Hannon for third. The third of four cautions came during lap eight. When action on the track began once again, Briggs and Short raced neck and neck for the lead. Then, during lap ten, Briggs passed Short for the lead. Corey Morgan 2014 Strictly Street Champion

WISCASSET,  ME — Wiscasset Speedway began racing action last Saturday night, but rain arrived before the whole show could be presented.  Heats for both Late Model Sportsman and Strictly Streets and the beginning of the Strictly Street feature had been started when rained out.

With only six of twenty-five laps complete, the drivers voted by majority vote not to make up the incomplete feature, thus ending their point season.  This makes Corey Morgan the Strictly Street Point Champion. Morgan had a great season with four wins.  In eight out of ten races, Morgan placed in the top three.

The Strictly Street division will return September 20 for the non-point Top Gun Strictly Shootout.  Thunder 4’s and Mini Truck features were cancelled and will not be made up.  They will run their final point races on September 27 as scheduled.  Both Ryan Chadwick (Thunder 4) and Jerry McKenna (Mini Trucks) will enter the last feature race with the 2014 Point Champion title in hand.
