Donny Lia Looks to Extend Stafford Winning Streak

Stafford Springs, CT — The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to Stafford Motor Speedway for the third of four visits during the 2007 season on Friday, August 10th for the 17th annual New England Dodge Dealers 150 with Donny Lia attempting to etch his name into the Stafford record books. The rain date for this event will be Saturday, August 11th.Lia has won the first two races of the 2007 season at Stafford, and he will attempt to score the Stafford three-peat when the Tour returns, which would also keep alive his chances of sweeping the season at Stafford, a feat that has never been accomplished. Five times, a driver has won three out of the four Whelen Modified Tour events at Stafford, Mike Stefanik in 1990, 1997, and 1998, Ted Christopher in 2005, and most recently, Tony Hirschman in 2005. In 1987, a year in which Stafford hosted five Whelen Modified Tour events, Reggie Ruggiero won three of those events. Lia is currently the Whelen Modified Tour points leader, but to keep his winning streak going at Stafford, Lia will face some stiff competition, but he is confident that he and his Bob Garbarino owned team can get the job done.

Vacation Time

It is that time of year when we traditionally take a vacation. The Whelen Modified Tour has had plenty of time over the last month to take some time off and relax. The Grand National Busch East Series has a few weeks before their next race at Lime Rock. We all need to take some time off. What do you have planned for your summer vacation? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ahhhhh, summertime, brings back memories of when I was a kid. We ruled the world, went where we wanted, when we wanted and stayed as long as we wanted. As long as we had our bikes we were free. No school, no homework, free to do anything we wanted. For me growing up vacation time was the entire summer. I lived in a neighborhood with enough kids that there was always something going on. We had enough kids to play baseball, so you could always find someone or something to do.

Marvin Rolls in Sunoco Mods at Thompson

tislogo2.jpgThompson, CT — The hot and steamy weather was equaled only by the action on the track at Thompson International Speedway on Thursday night. Bert Marvin of Waterford made a strong statement returning to competition in style by dominating the Sunoco Modified main event. Steve Michalski of Dayville won post-race tech to earn his first victory of the season in the Mini Stock 25-lapper. Fred Astle of N. Westport, MA, scored his long-awaited first win of the 2007 season. Mark Jenison of Danielson continues his impressive 2007 season with his fourth Late Model victory. Kurt Vigeant of Oxford was tops in the TIS Modified division while Ernie LaRose of Plainfield checkered the Limited Sportsman main.

After a one-week hiatus, Bert Marvin came back to Thompson with a vengeance. The veteran grabbed the lead early in the race and went on to dominate the 30-lap feature. On the opening lap, Kerry Malone dove to the inside of a side-by-side battle between pole sitter Dave Salzarulo and Josh Steeves to make it three-wide for the lead. Malone could not keep up his momentum and fell back to third. Marvin meanwhile appeared to be on rails, easily driving to the lead on lap three.
