In our lives many of the things we appreciate most are the things that we had to work the hardest to attain. The things that are handed to us sometimes are taken for granted and their true value is never truly appreciated until they are gone. Taking a look back through our lives identifies some challenging times that we have overcome. Who delivered us through those times? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A young guy stopped by the booth at Motorsports 2008 and was admiring the Tour Modified we had parked there. He asked a simple question, “How much are the tires on these cars?” I gave him a ballpark figure and he seemed surprised at the cost. He explained that he was thinking about running on the tour and wondered how much it would cost. He soon realized that the tires were the least of his concerns.

Salisbury, MA — Performance Media has reached an agreement to make Sunoco the presenting sponsor of SpeedwayEXPO, its motorsports exposition. On February 29-March 2 the Eastern States Exposition, in West Springfield, MA, the “Home of the Big E,” will become the home of the largest racing show in the Northeast. SpeedwayEXPO will take over the 130,000-square-foot Mallary Complex with exhibits from local and regional race tracks and sanctioning bodies, vendors of performance parts and accessories, retailers of collectibles and memorabilia and much more.

The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) stock car racing organization has reached an agreement with RT Raceparts of Hudson, NH and Torco Racing Fuels to be the Official Fuel Supplier for all ACT Late Model racing in the United States and Canada, including Barre, VT’s Thunder Road, the ACT Late Model Tour, and the Série ACT Castrol, effective immediately. It is anticipated that other ACT-affiliated tracks in the region will become part of this program.Rob Tower of RT Raceparts and Torco Racing Fuels has designed an aggressive marketing program that includes championship awards, point fund awards, car care products through Torco’s Skull Shine line, and more.
“RT Raceparts is very excited to partner with a stock car racing brand as strong as ACT,” said Tower. “We are thrilled to be able to announce this multi-faceted partnership, and are looking forward to supporting ACT and its competitors.”

It may be the dead of a snowy, cold winter, but a handful of American-Canadian Tour racers are headed to the track. With Florida’s, ahem, slightly warmer climate than the frigid northeast, no less than five drivers with ties to ACT are headed to the south the get their off-season fix.
Beginning this weekend at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL, the 4th annual “Speedfest” will see northern representation from Maine racers Mike and Ben Rowe. Ben, who scored Top 5 finishes in ACT Late Model Tour competition at Thunder Road’s Bond Auto Labor Day Classic 200 and Chittenden Milk Bowl last season, is a heavy favorite to take back a win that slipped away at Speedfest in 2007. Father Mike, himself a Top 5 runner at the Milk Bowl and the 1994 ACT Champion, will do his best to see that his boy waits another year. Among the drivers pre-registered are former Speedfest winners Eddie Hoffman and Charlie Menard, NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Kyle Busch and David Stremme, and former White Mountain Motorsports Park Champion D.J. Shaw of Center Conway, NH. Racing at USA Int’l Speedway is January 24-26.

Springfield, MA — The second annual SpeedwayEXPO ‘08 is scheduled for February 29-March 2 in the Mallary Complex on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition Center in West Springfield, MA. With more than three acres of indoor space dedicated to motorsports, displays will include local and regional race tracks and associations. Exhibitors include vendors of performance parts, safety equipment, accessories and the best in apparel and memorabilia. In addition there will be a full schedule of special events, racing seminars and activities, including autograph sessions, the Pit Crew Challenge, pedal-car races and a host of special vehicle displays. This show was a great hit in 2007 and should be even better in 2008.
Among the many happenings at EXPO ‘08 are the special awards to be presented to area racers, individuals, media, speedways etc. The 2nd Annual Speedy Awards will recognize the best of the best in northeast racing in 11 categories. Young Mike Ordway Jr. of ISMA has been nominated for the Break-Out Racer of the Year. The Break-Out Racer of the Year award is given to the competitor who stood out for his or her performances during the 2007 season. The inaugural winner in this category was Matt Hirschman.

Newburgh, NY – The Allison Legacy North Race Series is proud to announce the hiring of two full time Technical Inspectors for the 2008 season. Series Director Michael A. Vasquez, Sr. stated that the one thing lacking in the series over the past two seasons was the series ability to properly inspect all the cars in the series. Michael stated that although the series is based on a sealed engine rule, some teams may or may not try to find their way around this or to simply interpret the rules to their advantage. Having two full time technical inspectors will help keep each team and their race car on a level playing field.
Randall A. Brolsma and Dan Holie are two 17 year old young gun mechanics from Newburgh, NY, who together will both bring several years of automotive experience to the ALNRS. Michael stated that like some of our young drivers who have been behind the wheel of a race car since the age of 5, Randall and Dan have been wrenching on some type of engine since they were in grade school. Both Randall and Dan specialize in 2.2 and 2.3 motors and have both worked with performance Ford engines. They are both top students in the Automotive class at Newburgh Free Academy and look to forward their careers in the automotive field upon graduation.

American-Canadian Tour (ACT) stock car racer Brent Dragon of Milton, VT has filed the first full-season entry for the 2008 ACT Late Model Tour schedule. Dragon will pilot the #55 Beverage Mart/Furniture World of Vermont Chevrolet, in a new partnership with Kenyon Racing Products of Ontario and Port City Race Cars.
“I’m more excited this year than I’ve been in a long time,” reported Dragon, citing his teaming up with new crew chief Mike Kenyon. “Mike and I talk a lot, even several times a week, and his advice and help has been what I needed. This will be my first year having someone at the track at every race to help set up the chassis, where I was doing most of the work by myself before.”

Atlantic City, NJ — A strong turnout of track promoters and organization officials were on hand for the first Promoter’s Summit presented as part of the huge Motorsports 2008 Race Car Show presented by VP Racing Fuels at the Atlantic City, NJ Convention Center. The atmosphere of the gathering was upbeat with a lot of idea sharing going on amongst the attendees representing tracks and organizations in 13 different states.
“We feel it was a great first time event. We had good reviews from the attendees,” said Summit organizer Ernie Saxton. “We can see some areas that we need to change. There were suggestions made by attendees that will help us in our planning for next year. It was exciting to see the exchange of information that went on between attendees and the various experts that served on the various panels.”

Atlantic City, NJ — Ted Christopher, of Plainville, Conn., and Jimmy Broderick, of Brookfield, used their MototownUSA 12 Pack Series break to vie for Boardwalk Hall Atlantic City Indoor Racing honors and cash here Saturday Night.
Christopher and Broderick were among the 97 three quarter midget and 600cc micro sprint drivers vying for Saturday night’s M&R Midget A-Main’s 26 places. The fourth annual ACIR Gamblers Classic on the former Atlantic City Convention Center’s one- eighth-mile concrete oval is a revival of 1937-81 full and TQ midget racing.

Atlantic City, NJ — Former Wall Township Speedway three-quarter midget champion Mike Tidaback, of Little Falls, N.J., were among those Jersey Shore speedway drivers who starred here in Boardwak Hall Friday and Saturday.
Tidaback came from fifth starting spot to narrowly win the Fourth Annual Atlantic City Indoor Racing Gamblers Classic headliner Saturday night. The FedEx No. 43 Lindblad Badger-Suzuki GSXR driver grabbed second from Can-Am Midget Racing Club star and poleman James Friesen by lap five. Tidaback used lapped traffic in turn three on the one-10th-mile indoor concrete oval to oust Adams by lap 20.

Waterford, CT — Tom Fox, then 15, first climbed behind the controls of a Street Stock in 1978, beginning a decades-long association with Waterford Speedbowl. Winner of over 60 Speedbowl features, the second-generation racer returns to his old haunt in 2008 but in a different role. Rather than driving his familiar # 47 SK Modified, his contributions will be more in the “behind the scenes” mode.
“Right around the time of the annual Speedbowl Christmas party, Race Director Steve Harraka and I were discussing the open-slot left by our departing Chief Technical Inspector,” says Fox. “For the first time in many years my plans didn’t include racing, but I still had an interest in staying involved. It’s hard to completely pull-away from a sport you’ve been associated with for so long and I want be a part of the Speedbowl’s success. After all, I virtually grew-up there.”

Waterford Speedbowl’s commitment to the Modified is unsurpassed. The’Bowl has been crowning Modified champions for 57 seasons – from Hall of Famer Dave Humphrey in 1953 to Rob Janovic Jr. in 2007.
The quest to join that list begins anew in the SK-150, the showcase of the 11h annual Modified Nationals April 12-13. The SKs will share the spotlight with nine other divisions in the two-day Nationals. One of the first extra-money, extra-distance events for the divisions, the “150” remains one of the SK races anywhere.

Seekonk, MA — Hundreds of racers, crew members, officials, fans, and family members turned out to honor the stars of Seekonk Speedway’s 62nd consecutive season at the Venus de Milo Restaurant in Swansea, MA on Saturday, January 19. Over a hundred trophies, plaques, and jackets were handed out to the best and the brightest of 2007, including Rehoboth, MA’s David Darling, who earned top honors in the 1/3-mile Bay State oval’s top tier Pro Stock division for the second consecutive season. The 28 year-old and his Johnson Landscaping-Almeida Farms #52 team tied a track record with seven feature victories during the season and earned the highest winning percentage for a season in Seekonk Pro Stock history with 41.2%. They also finished in the top 10 in all 17 races and placed in the top five 14 times.
Pawtucket, RI’s Gerry DeGasparre, Jr., 38, was equally dominant in the Late Model division, posting a career high five wins and 15 top-fives in 18 starts en route to his second straight and third career title. The championship-winning Custom Auto Body-Spumoni’s Restaurant #71 team finished in the top 10 in all 18 races. Sport Truck ace Mike Cavallaro of Seekonk, MA claimed five checkered flags and finished in the top five in 18 of 19 races to successfully defend his ’06 title in the popular pickup class.

Atlantic City, NJ — Chris Daley, as a reigning World Karting Association champion, knows how prized an Atlantic City Indoor Races Gamblers Classic champ kart feature victory is here in Boardwalk Hall Saturday night.
Daley, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., climbed from 21st starting spot to oust polesitter Bob Baker on a lap four restart. Daley and Baker ran nose-to-tail the remaining 21 laps with Nick Herriven third.
Baker, who races from Lexington, N.C., received ACIR’s Cargo Trailer Sales Long Haul Award from among the some 200 champ kart, Slingshot and TQ/600cc micro sprint entrants.
