Mark Bakaj Makes Move Up to SK Modified® Division for 2009 Season at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — After winning four races and posting a third place finish in the 2008 SK Light Modified points standings at Stafford Motor Speedway, Mark Bakaj will make the move up to the SK Modified® division and challenge for Rookie of the Year honors during the 2009 season. Bakaj will utilize the new SK Modified® Spec Engine in his car, which he says was a major factor in making the move up to the feature division.

“The new spec motor was a big factor in allowing us to make the move up to the SK Modified® division,” said Bakaj. “Business has been slow of late, so we don’t have a whole lot of money to work with. We’re working with Brian Kowalyshyn from Specialty Performance Engines on our engine. He’s not one of the more known engine guys, but he makes great engines and our team is excited about going SK Modified® racing and shooting for Rookie of the Year this season.”

Former New England Racing Journalist Todd Drew Passes At Age 41

Todd Drew, a former New England auto racing journalist and editor has passed at age 41.  
 
A part of the Eastern racing scene for years, the popular Drew held many media-related positions during his involvement in the sport.
 
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., he was a contributing writer to many racing publications including Trackside Magazine, Gator Racing News, and served as a columnist and editor for New England Speedway Scene. Additionally, he was the former Media Coordinator for the NASCAR Modified Tour, and worked for Dale Earnhardt Incorporated at one time.

Star-Studded Entry List Set For Showdown

Irwindale attracts top short-track talent

With an entry list bursting at the seams with talent, the “Daytona 500 of short-track racing” should have no problem living up to its billing.

The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, considered the premier short-track racing event of the NASCAR calendar, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24, 2009 at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif.

The weekend’s main attraction-Saturday night’s NASCAR Camping World Series race-had 62 entries as of Wednesday, and the list is a who’s who of the nation’s best short-track racers.

Pass the Salt

This time of year gives us the opportunity to reflect on the past, rest in the present and look forward to the future. We usually use this time to look a little closer at a passage of Scripture and spend some time focusing on getting closer to God. This year I thought we might take a look at Jesus’ first public preaching, The Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew’s Gospel. Join with me over the next few weeks as we look at some exerts from this passage. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I have had it on my heart for some time to cover that passage here in the column. We will begin just after the Beatitudes, a passage in Matthew’s Gospel that begins what is referred to as “The Sermon on the Mount”. A time when Jesus sat and taught some of the most significant lessons we will learn as Christians to his disciples. If you recall a few winters back we covered the first part, Blessed are those…. Now we will continue and look a little further.

Loudon, NH — With event ticket renewals completed, New Hampshire Motor Speedway officials announced today that the limited number of tickets remaining for the Sunday, June 28 LENOX Industrial Tools 301 will go on sale on Monday, January 19 at 8:00 a.m.

ACT Invitational Joins a Super September Saturday Line-Up at NHMS

Loudon, NH — New Hampshire Motor Speedway announced today that the inaugural American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Invitational will be run on Saturday, September 19 at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The stars of the ACT and the Canadian Série ACT-Castrol will get their first superspeedway experience after the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour New Hampshire 100 and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series New Hampshire 200 races.

The ACT Invitational will have a purse of more than $65,000 for invited and approved teams that attend this historic, groundbreaking Late Model stock car racing event.

New England’s Modified Racing Series Prepares for 2009 Season

Canaan, NH –  The True Value Modified Racing Series and its operatives are busily preparing for the 2009 season, the sixth year for New England’s premier modified racing series.  Founder Jack Bateman has submitted a 16 race schedule to track owners for approval but awaits official word from Thompson and Wiscasset Speedways. It is hoped both tracks will be on the schedule but the dates have not been determined. If so, the tour will compete at 11 different race tracks in five states.

The 2009 campaign will open at Monadnock Speedway, Winchester, NH., on Saturday April 25, and return to the high banked facility, July 4, as part of that tracks Independence Day celebration.

Speedbowl 2008 Champions Honored

Waterford, CT — A full house of nearly 500 guests braved the snow and ice to jam Groton Inn & Suites this past Saturday night, January 10th as Waterford Speedbowl honored its 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champions and Saturday Legends Car champion.  Dennis Gada, Bruce Thomas Jr., Al Stone III, Ken Cassidy Jr., and Shaun Buffington were the evening’s guests of honor, each winning their respective division championships.

In addition to the champions the top 15 in SK Modified®, Late Model, Sportsman, Mini Stock, and Saturday Legends Car division points were recognized for their seasons.  A slew of special awards and hardware was distributed including Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Driver, Pit Crew and Sportsman of the Year Awards for each division plus Vault Productions Awards, Fast Track Medical Response Systems Awards, and a special presentation in honor of Jay Miller.

Carmichael Leads Schrader Trio To NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown

Daytona Beach, FL — To say Ricky Carmichael is a pretty big deal in Southern California may be an understatement. The man whose success earned him the title of ‘Greatest of All-Time’ in the motocross world had a great deal of his success on the West Coast.

When the 29-year-old Clearwater, Fla., native heads back to the Los Angeles area next weekend, though, it will be in a stock car. And he’s looking forward to treating his longtime fans to a glimpse of a new career at the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.

“I’m pumped to be racing for my fans out there,” Carmichael said. “Southern California has been good to me. It’s a great market for supercross and it’s been great for me as well.

“I’m pumped for the fans in California to see what I’ve been doing – racing in the NASCAR Camping World Series – it’s a great series.”

NEAR Hall of Fame Ticket Deadline

The deadline for ordering tickets for the New England Auto Racers Hall of Banquet being held on Jan. 25, 2009 is this Thursday Jan. 15th.

Three drivers, two owner/builders and three from the promotional side make up the New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame Class of 2009.

Drivers John Fitch, Bobby Dragon and Paul Richardson, promoters Bob Bahre, Jim McConnell and Tom Curley and car owner/ builders Rollie Lindblad and Art Barry will be inducted on Jan. 25, 2009 at LaRenaissance Banquet Hall in East Windsor, CT.

Laperle, Dragon, Williams Honored at ACT/Thunder Road Banquet of Champions

American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model driver Patrick Laperle from Montreal was honored as a first time winner of the United States ACT Championship at the annual Banquet of Champions on Saturday night at the Sheraton-Burlington Hotel & Conference Center in South Burlington, VT. Over 500 teams and fans celebrated with Laperle, as he became the first Canadian driver to win the ACT title since Jr. Hanley took the honors in 1995. Laperle is the first Quebec driver to ever win the US championship. Laperle won the ACT Canadian Serie Castrol championship in 2007. Laperle beat Milton, Vermont driver Scott Payea for the 2008 US title by a single point in the final race of the year. He had to win his third Chittenden Bank Milk Bowl at Thunder Road last fall to win the ACT title.

The 40th winner of the prestigious MacTavish Award was given to Milton, Vermont’s Brent Dragon. The award named for legendary New England racer Don MacTavish, who lost his life racing at the Daytona Int’l Speedway in 1969, made Dragon the third member of the first family of racing in Vermont to be honored with receiving the MacTavish, following wins by his father Harmon “Beaver’ Dragon in 1979, and uncle Bobby Dragon in 1983.

19-year-old Late Model Sensation Joey Pole and Dave Davis have struck an agreement that will allow the Hudson, N.H. native to race the #03 Dave Davis Motorsports NASCAR CWE Chevrolet in the 2009 Toyota Showdown at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA on January 23-24, 2009

Joey Pole wheeled the #03 Chevrolet at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last September and more than raised a few eyebrows with a fantastic top 10 finish after receiving some early race damage.

Seekonk Speedway Readies for 63rd Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet

Seekonk, MA –On Saturday, January 17, 2009, the Venus De Milo in Swansea MA will once again play host to the Seekonk Speedway Awards Banquet. As the 63rd season under the ARC banner comes to a close, the staff and management will honor the 2008 ARC Champions.

Being honored for the first time will be Pure Stock Champion Scott Cestodio from Swansea MA, SYRA 750 champion Dylan Estrella from North Attleboro and SYRA 600 Champion Jake Spillers from Ashburnham MA.

While the Fast Friday series saw three new title holders, the Super Saturday honorees have 13 titles between them. Westport’s Flyin’ Fred Astle picked up his 3rd ARC Pro Stock title, edging out Tom Scully Jr. by just 4 points. Riding a division tying 5 wins, he becomes the fourth driver in ARC Pro Stock history to win a third title. A second generation driver, he came up through the Charger ranks and moved into the Pro Stocks in 1987. Fred picked up his first Pro Stock feature on April 30, 1988, and his first title in 1994. In 2007, he hooked up with former Pro Stock driver Ron Lauro, and picked up 6 wins over a two year period. Ron, a former winner in the Late Model ranks moved into the owners’ role several years ago, and with Astle behind the wheel, this formidable duo picked up Ron’s first title as a car owner.

Gerry DeGasparre Jr moved to the head of the Late Model class for the third consecutive season, and fourth overall, driving for his father, Gerry Sr. 2008 started slow for the Pawtucket RI native, waiting until June 21 to visit victory lane. He would go on to win three of the next four 30 lap mains, finishing the season with 5 victories, tops in the Late Model division. Gerry started in the Street Stock division, and moved into the Late Models in 1999, picking up his first LM win on September 11, 1999. Gerry picked up his first Late Model Championship in 2003, with additional titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Over this 6 year period, Gerry has picked up 21 first place trophies.

Economaki To Receive NEAR’s Media Award

Chris Economaki, “The Dean of American Motorsports” will receive the Jack Ratta Memorial Media Award at the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame Induction Banquet Sunday Jan. 25 at LaRenaissance Banquet Hall in East Windsor, CT.

“Hooked” on the sport since age nine, the 88-year-old National Speed Sport News and television stalwart, has spent a lifetime in auto racing. He played a leading role in New England’s auto racing history as both a writer and track announcer in the 1940s and early 1950s. He announced at, among other places, Thompson, West Haven and West Springfield speedways.

News & Notes: Rip, Roaring And Ready To Go For The Showdown

Rip Michels knows one thing: There’s going to be a party after the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. He just hopes he’s in the middle of it all.

“We want that Showdown really bad,” said Michels. “I’ve led laps there. I feel like I’m always in contention but at the end of the night, it’s always somebody else walking out with the girl and I’m sitting there pretty bummed out.”

Michels will be one of the top contenders to take down the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model feature, one of the three races that make up the biggest weekend on NASCAR’s short-track racing calendar.

Riverside Park Speedway Reunion to be Presented by Budweiser

Track and sponsor together again after 10 years

Salisbury, MA — SpeedwayEXPO and Williams Distributing, of Chicopee, MA, have announced that Budweiser will be the presenting sponsor of the Riverside Park Speedway Reunion, which will take place at XPO. Those who attend the Reunion’s opening, on Friday night, February 27, will have a chance to go home with great gifts from Budweiser, including racing jackets, shirts and other racing-related prizes. The grand prize will be a Budweiser Mini Chopper worth more than $1,000, which will be won that night by a lucky individual at the Reunion.

Budweiser has long been associated with racing. The brand’s sponsorship of Daytona’s Bud Shootout begins each year’s stock car racing season and the Budweiser brand has long been part of some of racing’s more colorful teams. Bud currently sponsors Kasey Kahne, who races out of the Gillette-Evernham stable in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series. Budweiser has been around New England racing for a long time, too. Ten years ago Williams Distributing, which sells Budweiser in the region, was honored as “sponsor of the year” at Riverside Park Speedway. Sadly, 1999 turned out to be the final year for both the amusement park and its popular racetrack.

Thompson Champions to be Honored in Two Big Nights

Thompson, CT – Thompson International Speedway will pay tribute to its six NASCAR Whelen All American Series champions on Friday, January 23rd and Saturday, January 24th. With the number of racers who attend the awards ceremonies, it takes two evenings to honor the 2008 champions along with those race teams that finished in the top ten in track points during the year just completed.

Pro Stock champion, Fred Astle, Jr will top the list during the Friday festivities and Kerry Malone will be honored as the Sunoco Modified champ on Saturday.  Winners of division titles who will also be honored on Friday will be Limited Sportsman champ, Scott Sundeen and Mini Stock title holder, Danny Field.

Saturday night’s festivities will not only pay tribute to Malone, but will also feature Late Model champion, Jeff Zuidema and the winner of the Thompson Modified title, Kurt Vigeant.

A familiar refrain we hear this time of the year, but can we assure the year to come will be happy? What does it take to be happy? How can we assure that no matter what the circumstances the New Year brings we will be happy? Happiness is more a condition of the heart than a result of the events that happen around us. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Have you ever listened to a post incident interview that took place with the drivers who were involved? Each driver has a take on what took place. Each one saw things from a different perspective. If you listen closely you can determine the one event that triggered the incident. It starts something like this; “I thought I could” or “I had the position but”. We think we can predict the results of our choices but many times the results are not what we would expect.

Former Track Champion Jay Stuart Teams with Clark Motorsports for 2009 Late Model Season at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — Former Stafford Motor Speedway Late Model track champion Jay Stuart will team with Clark Motorsports, who won the 2007 Late Model track championship with Corey Hutchings, for a run at the 2009 SMS Late Model track title.

Stuart is the 1994 Stafford track champion, and in his last three full seasons of Late Model competition at Stafford in 2001, 2002, and 2003, he finished second and third twice in the final points standings. Both Stuart and Clark are hungry to return to their winning ways at the Connecticut half-mile.

Kretschman Motorsports Adds Ted Christopher to Late Model Lineup Alongside Ryan Posocco for 2009 Season

Stafford Springs, CT — When the green flag drops on the 2009 Late Model season at Stafford Motor Speedway, the Kretschman Motorsports team will have one of the most formidable driver lineups ever to hit the pavement at the Connecticut half-mile. In addition to defending track champion Ryan Posocco, the Kretschman team has added Ted Christopher to drive a second car in limited action during the 2009 season. Between them, Christopher and Posocco have won a grand total of 10 track championships at Stafford.

In a race where there are no points at stake and the only thing on the line is bragging rights, Marc Davis will get the chance to even the score with Joey Logano, his friend and teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, when he heads out to Irwindale, Calif., in two weeks for the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.

“It’s going to be a pretty cool experience,” said Davis. “I can’t wait to get out there and run it again. It’s the Showdown – it’s big. Everybody is going to be there.”

Camping World Truck Driver Takes Race 1 Sunday

Lake Placid, NY – Todd Bodine carried over his success from Saturday’s qualifying round to the finals as he earned his first Whelen Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge championship Sunday at the Olympic Sports Complex.

The top qualifier on Saturday, Todd Bodine was first out of the chute in Sunday’s first round of Race 1, which featured NASCAR and NHRA racers competing against the clock for a trip to the podium. His maiden run of 49.83 seconds stood as the fastest in the round as the top eight of 12 drivers advanced. In the second round, with the race order inverted, nearly each driver that went bested the one before him. Joey Logano, who went next-to-last, posted a 49.56 to set the bar for Bodine. The younger brother of the event’s namesake did not disappoint as he crossed the finish line at 49.35. Bodine’s two-round combined time of 1:39.18 earned the Race 1 title.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Veteran Edges Gunselman In Qualifying

Lake Placid, NY — NASCAR Camping World Truck Series veteran Todd Bodine put his experience in a bobsled to good use Saturday evening when he turned in the fastest time in qualifying for the Fourth Annual Whelen Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge at the Olympic Sports Complex.

As one of two drivers that competed in each of the previous three Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenges, Todd Bodine, younger brother of the challenge’s namesake, recorded afternoon practice runs of 52.14 and 52.26 seconds. As the last driver up in the qualifying round, the younger Bodine turned in a 52.20 in time trials to just edge Larry Gunselman at the top of the board by .01 seconds.
