It’s NASCAR Auto Racing And So Much More at the Icebreaker

Thompson, CT — A brand new auto racing season is about to begin in New England and the Thompson International Speedway kicks it all off with the traditional ICEBREAKER the weekend of April 4th & 5th. This two-day racing spectacular is the event winter weary race fans wait for each year.  Seven different NASCAR racing divisions will participate in the racing action and thousands of fans will enjoy both  on and off-track activity that is such a big part of ICEBREAKER weekend.

Motor homes and campers are being brought out of winter storage and are already beginning to be moved to the huge Thompson Speedway grounds. Race fans from all over the northeast converge upon the Thompson complex for a weekend of racing, golf, great food, entertainment ,renewal of old friendships and the making of new friends.

Racing is, of course, the main attraction and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (WMT) will take center stage. The “Tour” begins its 25th season where it first began at the Thompson International Speedway. NASCAR is making an effort to make the 25th anniversary year something special for both fans and the drivers. Race fans will have a wonderful opportunity to get to meet and greet their favorite drivers and will also be introduced to the newest members of the WMT during large autograph sessions that the WMT will conduct at each event during the 2009 racing season.  Every driver in the starting field who can possibly attend these sessions will be available to greet fans, talk racing and sign autographs. Fans are urged to bring their cameras and to bring something with them or pick up a souvenir at the track for autographing.  The autograph session at Thompson will follow opening race ceremonies and will begin at 12 Noon on the track’s midway.

The NASCAR WMT is one of seven divisions of race cars that make up ICEBREAKER weekend. Thompson’s NASCAR Whelen All American Series divisions, know as Thompson’s “Super 6” will play a major role in the racing excitement that is so much a part of a season opening event. Sunoco Modifieds, Super Late Models, Thompson Modifieds, Late Models, Limited Sportsman and Mini Stocks will join the WMT to make for a spectacular weekend of high speed competition.

All cars will practice Saturday morning and will begin their qualifying runs at 1:30 PM in the afternoon. The Sunoco Modifieds and Late Models will compete in the first of two feature event races for these divisions once Saturday qualifying is complete. After Saturday’s racing activities are over, the action moves to the Raceway Restaurant and Lounge for the traditional evening of dinner, drinks and dance. The “clubhouse” is also the site of the traditional breakfast buffet which is served from 7 AM until 11 AM on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Grandstand open both mornings at 9:30AM and the Sunday racing will begin at 12 Noon. For more information, visit www.thompsonspeedway.com or call 860-923-2280.
