Points Battles and Busy Night on Tap at ‘Bowl on Saturday

Waterford, CT — The Waterford Speedbowl turns its attention to a busy night at the three-eighths mile shoreline oval this Saturday.  The ‘Bowl will host a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation awareness night, helping raise funds and educating Speedbowl fans about the disease which affects nearly 30,000 children and adults in the U.S.  The Norwich Bulletin Mini Stock division will be racing a 25-lap event with a guaranteed starting spot at Stafford Motor Speedway’s Fall Final Weekend up for grabs to the race winner.  Not overshadowed by any means, the point standings in all four NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions will also be in the spotlight on Saturday.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease which affects the lungs and digestive system.  Today, more than 70% of cases are detected by the age of two.  Advances in research and medical technology have enabled the life expectancy of those inflicted with the disease to increase to a median age of 37.   Still, about 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year.  The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, founded in 1955, remains to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease.

Some of the planned activities include a charitable track walk before the racing at 10:00am, plus a raffle and donations table for Speedbowl fans to participate in.  The Hill family will serve as the Speedbowl’s guests of honor for the night.  A donation to the CF Foundation is appreciated to participate in the track walk.  Refreshments will be provided.

The point standings will be a focal point for the remainder of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season.  Keith Rocco of Wallingford leads the SK Modified® standings by a mere six points over Groton’s Ron Yuhas Jr.  Rocco has won two of the past five SK races held, but Yuhas rides a 10-race streak of top five finishes into the night.  They are both chasing their first Speedbowl SK championship.

Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton holds a 74-point advantage in the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model division, however he will compete at New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s ACT Invitational event Saturday evening.  Should he not be able to return to the ‘Bowl in time to compete, second place Rich Staskowski of Hope Valley, Rhode Island stands to gain serious ground and claw back into contention.  Thomas is chasing his third straight division championship.

The Street Stock battle could not be any tighter and is one of the most dramatic in recent years at the two-groove Speedbowl.  Brandon Plemons of Uncasville and Ronnie Oldham Jr. of Old Saybrook sit even atop the standings after spending the past several weeks in a neck and neck battle.  Neither can afford to look at just one another, as defending champion Al Stone III is just 20 points back.  But Stone sits fourth in the standings.  Chaplin’s Walt Hovey Jr. is just 14 points behind the lead duo.  A tight four-car battle for the championship is in the making.

The Norwich Bulletin Mini Stocks, in addition to racing an extra five laps for the berth in the Stafford event in two weeks also has a tussle at the top.  While veteran Danny Field of Deep River chases his third division title at Waterford, Rhode Island driver Kyle James has emerged as a consistent threat to derail Field’s title hopes.  He sits just 10 points back, with the front-running Louis Bellisle of Lisbon just 20 points back and fresh off his first win of the year.

In addition, the NEATV Truck Series joins the racing card for a 25-lap event where Allen Coates of Ledyard seeks his seventh win in eight Truck events this year.
