Pennink and Blewett are Wall Turkey Derby Modified Winners

Turkey Derby XXXVI – Day 2 Results

Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Station, Pa. and Jimmy Blewett of Howell split 100-lap main events for Modified stock cars during Turkey Derby stock car racing at Wall Stadium Saturday. The northeast season finale program was witnessed by one of the largest gatherings in recent memory.

In the tour type Modified race, Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. led the first 39 laps before Pennink took the lead with a pass in the outside lane. Pennink then paced the 26-car field through lap 83 when Blewett took the top spot. Pennink stayed on Blewett’s rear bumper for the following laps, but Blewett’s good fortunes were running out as his No. 66 started to spray oil. Soon Blewett was sent to the pit area because of the problem and Pennink regained the lead.

Pennink’s final ten laps were not easy, however, as Pete Brittain of Oakhurst hounded him to the finish. Howell’s Jamie Tomaino, Jon McKennedy and Anthony Sesely of Matawan wrapped up the top five.

Gahan, originally from Dover, N.H., got his start in auto racing at his hometown track – Dover Speedway – in 1948 after serving more than two years as an Army military policeman in Germany following Word War II. After getting his start at Dover, Gahan competed in the NASCAR Sportsman division until 1965, when he moved over to Modifieds.

Gahan compiled 6,560 points during his 1966 run to the title to distance himself from runner-up Bugs Stevens and third place Ray Hendrick. Giving Thanks

Giving of ourselves to others is not something that comes naturally; we have to work at it. Many times it is a difficult choice between serving ourselves and serving others. Take a moment and think about all those who have made the difficult choice and give thanks. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving gives us a time to reflect on all that God has blessed us with. We don’t have to look very far before we find something we are thankful for. Who are you thankful for? Go to them and let them know that their sacrifice for you was appreciated.

Around the Track wth Jalopy Jack

Kind of ended with a whimper, didn’t it? Yeah, we really got teased a couple of weeks ago at Texas. They say it’s the little things that count. Jimmie Johnson and his team really got those little things in order and had no plans to make any changes in their team, so the feeling’s that it’s more of the same to come. Unless 1 of the new combinations concerning car owners, crew chiefs, drivers and teams really magically clicks, probably the only thing to look forward to for the 2010 Cup Season is the earlier starting times for some of the Sunday races, including the Daytona 500.

And I got to think of another name for Daytona because it just doesn’t seem like the Daytona we used to know. It seems more like “Tellawrecka” and the only thing Daytona has anymore is the hype. I can still look forward to the “shootout” or whatever they call it, because that race doesn’t mean all that much anyway. But the Daytona 500 itself really being decided by a crap shoot just doesn’t cut it for me anymore. Just look at how successful the winner has been the rest of the season in recent years and you can see what I mean. I can still look forward to the ARCA race because that’s a big chance for those guys. Where you need to be is down there in person so you can see the real action and that of course is on the short tracks.

Thankful for a Guiding Spirit

Life is full of temptations, challenges, difficulties and decisions. Do we have someone guiding us through or are we trying to get through it on our own? Is there someone waking beside us? Who is spotting for you on the road of Life? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The other day I was standing behind the grandstands talking with a friend waiting for the Modifieds to take the track for practice. I wasn’t sure what the schedule was but when I started to see the stream of spotters walk by with the tools of their trade in their hand I knew the time was close.

A spotter’s tools are simple; a good set of eyes to be able to watch what is happening, good judgment about how to advise the driver and a way to communicate to the driver. We can all watch but a good spotter sees difficulty coming before it happens. Some things that happen need to be communicated to the driver some don’t. A good spotter doesn’t overload the driver with information that they don’t need to run the race. The third thing a good spotter needs is a way to communicate to the driver. Just having a radio and taking into the mike doesn’t qualify. The spotter and the driver need to speak the same language they need not only to hear each other but to understand what the other means.
