Speedbowl adds Friday evenings in 2010

‘The Show and Go at the ‘Bowl’ features HDRA 100 Foot Drags and free Cruise Shows weekly May to October

Waterford, CT — When the Waterford Speedbowl gates open for its 60th anniversary season this spring, a major addition to the calendar of events will be welcomed. The Show and Go at the ‘Bowl, a Friday evening event featuring 100 Foot Drags plus free Cruise Shows will be held each Friday from May through October 1 beginning at 5:00pm.

The Speedbowl first added the 100 foot drags a year ago by trial, met with rousing success. A healthy turnout of drag racers routinely took to the ‘Bowl’s asphalt. That support, along with promising interest from fans, led to the return of the only official drag race competition in Connecticut to the ‘Bowl in 2010. Several intense battles took place during the elimination rounds a year ago, including a grudge match order demanded by a packed Speedbowl crowd during 2009’s Back to School Bash event.

An open-format Cruise Show, free to the public, will accompany the drag races and convert the Speedbowl midway into “Main Street”, the coolest and most eclectic collection of cars around. A popular summertime activity for car enthusiasts of all ages, cruises are wildly popular. The pairing of the Cruise Show with the competition of drag racing is sure to make The Show and Go at the ‘Bowl a unique experience.

“Adding The Show and Go at the ‘Bowl on Friday evenings allows us to broaden our reach and continue to expand the variety of ways folks can enjoy our venue” offered Speedbowl owner Terry Eames. “After our 50th season we brought Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday to the community which blossomed into a great success. Introducing this event for our 60th season comes with the thought it can be just as important to the Speedbowl’s longevity as an entertainment destination for Southeastern Connecticut and beyond.”

The Show and Go Friday evening drag events will be produced and managed by Holeshot Drag Racing Association. Practice runs plus elimination rounds and championship races will be conducted weekly, complete with tree and full timing system. In 2010, the drag events expand to include an ‘Outlaw’ class and a points system will be in place for various classes. Theme nights including Chevy, Mustang, Mopar, Subaru and Tuner Shootouts, plus more will be featured throughout the season. Anticipation and interest in the new format is already ballooning. Reasonably priced entry-fees will be required for entry into the drags.
