Russ Stoehr Eyes Historic NEMA Win at Stafford

Brockton, MA — Russ Stoehr heads to Stafford Motor Speedway’s Carquest Extreme Tuesday aiming to take over third on the Northeastern Midget Association’s all-time win list. Last Sunday’s victory at Thunder Road was the 45th career win for Stoehr, putting him in a tie for third with Nokie Fornoro.

Two-for-two in 2011, defending champions Stoehr and the Dumo’s Desire team take plenty of momentum to a facility he has yet to win at. Thunder Road was the 12th track Stoehr has conquered going back to his initial win with owner Bruce Bean at Star Speedway on June 20, 1987.

A third straight win will put Stoehr in some lofty company as well. Since 1981, three straight has been accomplished only five times, the last time by Randy Cabral in 2008.

2-Time Ltd. Division Pro-4 Modified Champion Stan Mertz Takes Over for Donny Lia in CARQUEST Champions for Charities at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — 2-time Limited Division Pro-4 Modified champion Stan Mertz has joined the CARQUEST Champions For Charities field, taking the place originally reserved for Donny Lia, who will be unable to attend the race due to a scheduling conflict. Mertz won the Limited Division Pro-4 Modified championship in 2008 and 2009. Mertz will be racing for the Connecticut chapter of Autism Speaks and he is looking forward to getting out onto the Stafford Mini-Mile behind the wheel of a Senior Outlaw Kart.

“I’m certainly glad Stafford was able to fit me in for the race,” said Mertz. “We’re excited about the race. I’ve been doing a lot of work for the tornado victims in Massachusetts and this is another great opportunity to raise money and give something back to Autism Speaks and fill the shoes that Donny Lia got started. We can’t wait to get to Stafford.”

While Mertz is a 2-time Ltd. Division Pro-4 Modified champion, he falls far behind his competition in terms of go kart experience. But he is looking forward to the challenge of racing a new style of car as well as the challenge of racing on the Stafford Mini-Mile.

Stewart Friesen Out and Randy Cabral In for CARQUEST Champions for Charities Event at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — With 2010 Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Series champion and 2010 Syracuse 200 winner Stewart Friesen unable to attend CARQUEST Champions For Charities due to a scheduling conflict, 2-time NEMA Midget champion Randy Cabral has stepped in to take his place. Cabral won the NEMA Midget championship in 2008 and 2009 and he is also the defending CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday NEMA Midget race champion at Stafford.

While Cabral has plenty of Midget car experience, he admits that he is a bit lacking in experience when it comes to the Senior Outlaw Kart that he will be driving in the Inaugural CARQUEST Champions For Charities event.

“I have very limited experience in a go kart,” said Cabral. “I’ve played around a few times in a kart on a road course, but I think the guys I’ll be racing against have a lot more kart experience than me. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to pick it up pretty quickly, it’s a stacked field that I’ll be racing against, that’s for sure. I have a couple of crew guys that race karts, so hopefully they can give me a couple of pointers.”

Rain Forces Cancellation at Thompson Again

Thompson, CT — Two days of what seemed like non-stop rain forced Thompson International Speedway management to pull the plug on the Thursday, June 23, 2011 race program. Weather conditions coupled with a forecast for even more rain throughout the day and evening left Thompson officials no choice but to cancel early so that both fans and competitors alike would not begin to needlessly head for the track. This marks the third time this season that Mother Nature has forced a race cancellation.

Everyone will now set their sights on next Thursday, June 30th, when the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour moves to Thompson for the running of the Budweiser “King of Beers” 150. Grandstand will open at 2 PM and time trials for the Modified Tour cars will get underway at 5:30 Pm. Joining the WMT will be Thompson’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series “Super 6” divisions competing in feature only events.

Tickets for next week’s Bud 150 are available at the Thompson track office. All major credit cards are accepted for advance ticket sales. Fans may call 860-923-2280. Full details on this much anticipated race are available on the tracks web page. www.thompsonspeedway.com.
