Thursday Races Fall Victim to Hurricane Irene
Thompson, CT — Thompsons Speedway’s Thursday Night Thunder racing series is another victim of hurricane Irene. Since the Sunday storm, the speedway has been without electric power and internet service. Many roads in northeastern Connecticut are still blocked by fallen trees and downed electrical wires are a common site in the State’s “quiet corner.”
Speedway owner, Don Hoenig decided on Wednesday afternoon that the prospects of being able to hold a race program on Thursday were virtually none. “We provide our own power for the race track and pit area lighting, but everything else is powered by Connecticut Light and Power. In order to run a race program, we need much more electrical power than we are able to provide ourselves. Therefore, we find it necessary to cancel this week’s race program,” said Hoenig.
The next event at the Thompson Speedway will be the much heralded UNOH SHOWDOWN on the weekend of September 10th and 11th. This incredible race program will feature the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour in a triple header. Each individual Tour will compete in its own 125-lap race. Both Tours will then be combined for the 50-lap, $50,000.00 SHOWDOWN race with some $15,000.00 going to the winner. Tickets to this event are available by calling the track office. 860-923-2280.
