Reigning Riverhead Champion Justin Bonsignore Eyes NASCAR WMT Title

Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, NY is looking to improve on the best season of his career in Modified racing. In 2010, Bonsignore won the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s Rookie of the Year award. 2011 saw Bosignore receive accolades for his first career NWMT win, a top-10 finish in points and Riverhead’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship. He was also voted the Most Popular Driver by the fans.

Bonsignore had a rough start to 2011 including a carburetor penalty and engine issues that placed him outside the top-20 in points. Once the team hit their stride, the season showed steady improvement. “2011 was a great season,” said Bonsignore. “It started off a little slow but once we got luck on our side it turned out to be a great season. We won our first NWMT race and were in contention nearly every race in the 2nd half of the season. It was a lot of fun going to the track knowing you would have a chance to win every week! It’s all you can ask for as a driver.”

The 23-year-old also had another full-time commitment in Modifieds at Riverhead Raceway on Long Island. “Riverhead was really amazing every week,” said Bosignore. “There wasn’t too many nights that we didn’t leave there happy. We had a few tough runs which made the points closer than we would have liked, but we were the car to watch every week. It was so much fun to have all the fans come up to the car each week and say how much they enjoyed the show we were able to put on coming from the back to the front.”

East Windsor, CT — On Sunday January 29, The New England Antique Racers (NEAR), presented the 15th annual New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame Inductions. Award-winning sportswriter Matt Buckler served as Master of Ceremonies for the well-attended event held at LaRenaissance Banquet Hall in East Windsor, CT.

Receiving induction honors this year were drivers Reggie Ruggiero, Joey Kourafas, Moe Gherzi, Jerry Humiston, and Roland Lapierre Sr., owner/mechanics Mario Fiore and Jim Jorgensen and track operator Irene Venditti.

Though not present due to prior commitments, longtime Northern media personality Dave Moody was the recipient of the prestigious “Jack Ratta Memorial Media Award.” Veteran auto racing journalist and Hall of Fame Member Pete Zanardi received the Danny Pardi Memorial Award for his many contributions to NEAR over the years.

A pivotal figure during the formative years of the sport and truly one of the regions earliest stars, Moe Gherzi came to stock cars following a brief fling with midget racing during the busy post-war era. Gherzi won for some of the best teams in the early days of the sport while displaying a flashy style which became his trademark. Nicknamed “Moneybags” owed to a knack of winning many big-dollar events, he tasted success at virtually all of the regions tracks. He later served as the longtime Racing Director at Connecticut’s Plainville Stadium. Accepting for her late father from presenter Dave Dykes was Ms. Alma Michaud.

Thompson, CT: On Friday and Saturday, January 27 & 28, 2012, Thompson International Speedway crowned champions in its six NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions. Keith Rocco of Wallingford, CT, took center stage on Saturday night as the Sunoco Modified champion. Late Model titlist Tommy O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, and Keith “Cam” McDermott of Scituate, RI, also received accolades. The competition at Thompson Speedway is unparalleled; proving once again that a championship at the historic facility is a tremendous accomplishment.

NEMA is proud to announce that former championship driver and race director for the 2011 season, Tom Fox, has been promoted to its Director of Race Operations. Fox, and a team he will be assembling, will be responsible for all on track and off track operations each week.

“It’s about organization and showmanship. We are going to step up our game,” said NEMA President Mike Scrivani. “Putting on the best show we can each week, working with the promoters and their staff while at the race track, and coming prepared with the best possible show every week is our goal in 2012 and beyond. Having Tom on board to run this end of the business for us is both incredibly helpful and welcomed,” said Scrivani.

Danny Cates Joins SK Modified® Rookie Class for 2012 at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Speedway's SK Modified® division will welcome another new member for the 2012 season as Danny Cates will join the division. Cates has several top-5 points finishes in the modified division at Thompson Speedway, finishing as high in the points standings as second. Cates came to Stafford for the 2011 CARQUEST Fall Final in preparation for a full season of SK Modified® racing in 2012, where he intends to run for Rookie of the Year honors.

"This is something new for us," said Cates. "We ran at the Fall Final and we had a lot of fun and we really liked the track. You'll find competition is tough at any track you go to, but at Stafford, it seems like it's a bit tougher. We had a few problems during the weekend, but we were pretty fast. I had seen hundreds of races at Stafford but that was our very first time out on the track."

Cates proved to be a fast study during the CARQUEST Fall Final, placing as high as 4th in the practice sessions leading up to the feature event. In the feature, Cates started 22nd and he worked his way through traffic to come home in 7th place at the end of the race. Cates will look to build upon this experience as he readies himself for the 2012 season.

Tyler Hines Will Be Living a Dream as an SK Light Modified Rookie at Stafford Speedway in 2012

Stafford Springs, CT — Former Wild Thing Kart driver Tyler Hines is the newest addition to the ever growing SK Light rookie class at Stafford Speedway for the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season. Hines will take the reins of the #19 Gunsmoke Stables Ford that was driven the past several seasons by Steve Greer for his rookie season in the SK Light division. It was thanks to an association with the Greer family and a phone call from Steve Greer that will see Hines living his dream during the 2012 season.

"Steve's niece Kayla started racing Junior Outlaws in the Wild Thing Kart Series, and they bought one of our old karts," said Hines. "We became friends with the Greers and we helped them work on Kayla's kart. After the season was over, my dad got a call from Stash Butova, (both Frank Ruocco's and Tyler's crew chief) stating that Steve wanted to offer me a chance to drive in the SK Lights. When the SK Light division first started, I dreamed of racing at Stafford on a Friday night and now I have the opportunity to do that. I can't wait for the season to get started, this is a great opportunity for me to be able to move into bigger and faster cars. It was a thrill for me to have Steve offer me a seat in his car."

Unlike most rookie drivers, Hines will be able to head into his rookie season with some experience behind the wheel of a modified, which came through a connection to Frank and Jesse Ruocco. Hines got his start in racing by taking one of Ruocco's Wild Thing Karts out onto the track, and the connection with the Ruocco family led to Hines taking a few laps in Jesse Ruocco's SK Light.

SPAFCO Race Chassis Taking Over Parts Truck Duty at Stafford Speedway from Reliable Welding & Speed

Stafford Springs, CT — For the 2012 season at Stafford Motor Speedway, the paddock area will have a new look as SPAFCO Race Chassis will become the new parts vendor, taking over a position that Reliable Welding and Speed had occupied for the past 9 seasons.

"We're looking forward to coming on board and helping support all the racers at Stafford," said Ken Barry, co-owner of SPAFCO Race Chassis. "We're really excited about getting the opportunity to be the parts supplier to Stafford, and we can't wait to get started this season."

Reliable Welding and Speed, owned by SK Modified® competitor Brad Hietala and his wife Linda, had provided parts supply to the Stafford paddock area every season since 2003. But the Hietalas made the decision to focus their efforts on their #9 SK Modified® with driver Chris Matthews for the 2012 season, opening the door for someone to take over the parts vendor position, and SPAFCO Race Chassis filled that opening.

Stability, Cost Savings & Growth In Store for NEMA in 2012

Brockton, MA — With the election of a new board & various executive positions, the underlying themes coming out of NEMA’s 2012 rules meeting and elections held in December at Thompson Speedway’s clubhouse were about stability, cost savings & growth.

NEMA’s executive board will once again be headed up by President, Mike Scrivani. Scrivani will be supported by Tim Bertrand as Vice President, Russ Stoehr as 2nd Vice President – to focus on the NEMA Lite series, newly elected Paul Scally as Treasurer, and Linda Cleveland, who continues as Secretary. Doug Cleveland and Shawn Torrey were re-elected as board members, along with a new contingent including Adam Cantor, Barry Kitteredge, Bob Seymour and Joe Santa Maria.

“Coming off of one of the most competitive seasons ever, we looked – both as a club and as a Board, to achieve stability, cost savings and focus on growth for 2012,” stated Vice President, Tim Bertrand. “We chose to freeze some of our current technical rules for a period of at least two years and adopted some new rules, such as a new handicapping system to encourage car count. Our old system discouraged members who were only able to make it once in a while, and the new system encourages anyone with a midget to come run with us. We hope to even attract some talent from the Midwest to our races,” said Bertrand.

Former NEMA Champion Joey Payne Returns to NEMA Full Time in 2012

Northeast Midget Association action has been as hot in the off season, as it was on the track in 2011. Last week, 2003 NEMA champion and long-time open wheel standout Joey Payne announced that he will be returning full time to the circuit in 2012 aboard the Ed Breault owned #44.

“I had a decent year in 2011,” stated Payne. “We raced Oswego full time, finishing 6th in points with one win. We also had some bad luck, after falling out of the $10,000 to win Mr. Supermodified race with a flat while leading with 20 laps to go. The Classic was another let down, running 2nd for 100 laps and losing the rear end. Ed Breault asked me to drive the last three races of the year, and we didn’t have good luck either, but we had a blast,” said Payne.

With plans to run full time schedules with NEMA, at Oswego (Muldoon Racing) and quarter midgets with his son Anthony at Wall Stadium, Payne will certainly have his hands full this season. His goals are also very clear, “I’d like to win some races at Oswego, and make it back to victory lane with NEMA,” said Payne.

‘Rapid Roman’ Richie Evans Rode Orange Chariot Into History

New York Star Won Nine NASCAR Modified Series Titles In Hall Of Fame Career

Daytona Beach, FL — Richard Ernest “Richie” Evans certainly was the face of NASCAR – and modified racing – in the northeast, winning an estimated 475 times in approximately 1,300 starts. It equates to a win in every three starts (a 36.5% clip), something unheard of in modern racing at any level.

Evans will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Friday, one of five members of the Hall’s third class comprised of the New York native, legendary crew chief Dale Inman, team owner Glen Wood and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough. He is the first of 15 inductees without a connection to NASCAR’s premier series.

The 2012 enshrinement ceremony kicks off NASCAR Acceleration 2012 weekend, which includes the NASCAR Preview 2012 Presented by Sprint, where fans can interact with the sport’s legends and current stars in person, get autographs and catch a sneak peek at the upcoming season. Fans can go to for more information.

Auto Parts Swap ‘n Sell Timed Perfectly

Vernon, CT — On January 21 & 22, 2012, Start/Finish Productions will host the annual Auto Parts Swap ‘n Sell, the areas only indoor all-automotive swap meet. The timing of this traditional event is optimal for the automotive community. Enthusiasts simply cannot wait for “spring cleaning” to get their house or, more aptly, their garage in order. Come April, most hot rods, customs, and imports lay in wait for first clear day, for the first cruise nights; and race cars are nearly ready to take to the track.

With the start of the new calendar year, now is the perfect time for the proverbial ‘out with the old in with the new’ or maybe just ‘new to you’. Located on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition Center in West Springfield, MA, Home of the “Big E”, the Better Living Center will house the 300 plus vendors of the Auto Parts Swap ‘n Sell.

For those who need to focus on ‘out with the old’, limited vendor space is still available. Spaces measuring 12 feet by 15 feet can purchased for $125 by calling Start-Finish Productions at 860.871.6376 or 860.268.1787.

Driver’s Seat Marks the Spot for Cantor in 2012

Brockton, MA — After taking the 2011 season to “learn & reflect,” 2012 will mark Adam Cantor’s return to the driver’s seat as a championship contender in Northeast Midget Association competition.

“I can’t wait for the green flag to drop at Waterford’s opener in late March,” states Cantor. “I’m really looking forward to running against the likes of Randy Cabral, Russ & Greg Stoehr and Joey Payne all season long.”

Cantor calls the 2011 season “the most difficult of his life,” having been the first time in 22 years not behind the wheel of a racecar. As much as it was difficult, Cantor also learned a great deal as well as he spent much of his time “watching the races unfold, learning each driver’s tendencies, strategy, and taking the time to understand chassis set up at a much deeper level.”

Peter Portante Joining Late Model Rookie Clas in 2012 at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Peter Portante, who is the defending Allison Legacy Series North champion and has more wins in the Wild Thing Kart Series than any other driver, will become the newest member of the Late Model rookie class for the 2012 season at Stafford Motor Speedway. While most drivers from the Wild Thing Kart Series make their home in the Modified divisions at Stafford, Portante has taken the unique route of moving into Stafford's premier full bodied division for his rookie campaign. Portante has purchased the former #71 Late Model from Walt Wosko, Jr., and Portante will also have help from Wosko's team as he tackles his rookie season at Stafford.

"The Late Model division seemed like a great way to move up the ladder, and we had a great opportunity with Walt Wosko Jr.'s team," said Portante. "We bought Walt Jr.'s #71 car and his crew guys are going to be helping us out this year, so it was all about taking advantage of the opportunity that we had in front of us. Those guys know a lot about the car, so everything is going to be on me this year and I wouldn't have it any other way. We have "Little John" as the crew chief, and Bill and Jay, I would be nothing without those guys helping me out. I'd like to stick with the full body cars and this was the best opportunity for us right now and we like the direction the Late Model division will take us for the future. It doesn't get any better than the Late Model division at Stafford and it's up to me to make the most of the opportunity."

While Portante will have the Wosko crew to lean on for help with setting up his #24 Spargo Construction Chevrolet, he says that getting used to the size of both the Late Model car and Stafford track will be his biggest challenge as he looks to get himself established during his rookie season.

Nick & Joe Boivin Ready to Tackle Modified Racing at Stafford Speedway at Rookies in 2012

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway's modified rosters will have a pair of brother rookie competitors during the 2012 season. Nick Boivin will join the SK Modified® rookie class, while his younger brother, Joe, will be joining the SK Light Modified rookie class. Both Boivin brothers have been behind the wheel of racecars since a very early age and they will look to become the first brothers to each be Rookies of the Year in the same season in Stafford Speedway history.

Nick will be behind the wheel of the #11 Millrite Machine Ford in the SK Modified® division, while Joe will be piloting the #21 Ford of Northampton Ford in the SK Light ranks. Both Nick and Joe began their racing careers driving Wild Thing Karts and their career progression has brought them to Stafford Motor Speedway's modified divisions. While both Nick and Joe will be modified rookies at Stafford, Nick has an edge over Joe in the experience department as Nick raced in the SK Light and Tour-type Modified divisions at Monadnock Speedway last season before driving an SK Light at the CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend. Joe will be driving a modified for the very first time in his career.

"This will be my first time in a modified," said Joe. "I have high hopes for the SK Light division, but there is definitely going to be a learning curve for me. I've never driven a car with this much power before."

Richie Pallai, Jr. Returning to SK Modified® Division at Stafford; Has Big Plans for 2012 Season

Stafford Springs, CT — Richie Pallai, Jr. will return to competition in Stafford Motor Speedway's premier SK Modified® division, racing a partial schedule in a car owned by 7-time Stafford SK Modified® champion Ted Christopher. What began as a joke between the two drivers will now play out into a reality during the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season at Stafford Motor Speedway with Pallai behind the wheel of the #93 Christopher owned SK Modified®.

"I've been joking with Teddy for a while that I would someday drive a car for him," said Pallai. "Over the winter, Teddy got in touch with my father and we ended up putting a deal together to drive an SK at Stafford. It's not too often that a guy like Teddy comes to you and says that he would like you to drive one of his cars, so it's a pretty cool deal. Teddy has top notch equipment and his shop is right across the street from ours, so we're hoping to have a lot of fun in the SK car this year."

Plans call for Pallai to race Christopher's SK Modified® car between 5-8 times during the 2012 season with a focus on the premier events of the 2012 SK Modified® season at Stafford.

NEMA to Support Providence Indoor Races – Off the Track & On

Providence, RI — On March 10 & 11, 2012, the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, RI, will host the annual Coffee Cup Indoor Auto Racing featuring the small but powerful Three-Quarter Midgets (TQs). And when guests enter the facility to enjoy the annual event they will get an up-close view of a “sister” racer, a full-scale Midget, courtesy of the Northeastern Midget Association.

The racecar owned by Ed Breault that will be campaigned by Joey Payne, Jr. of Fairlawn, NJ, on the Northeastern Midget Association during the 2012 season will be in the entrance of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center allowing fans to get a good look at a very similar car that will be in competition during the two-day event.

“We are happy to be here in support of the Coffee Cup,” said NEMA President Mike Scrivani. “This is an excellent way to introduce fans to a race car that they may not be all that familiar. It is also a great way for us as a racing organization to say thank you to everyone at Dunkin’ Donuts, the Dunkin Donuts Center, and event organizers, Area Auto Racing News, for providing both competitors and fans with an incredible racing event.”

Granite State Pro Stock Series Encouraged By Interest

Canaan, NH — Mike Parks and Jack Bateman, founders of the New Granite State Pro Stock Series, were pleased with the turnout at three meetings last week to discuss rules, purse structure, race procedures, and answer questions as they plan their first season for pro stock racers. The series sanctioned a race last summer at Twin State Speedway, Claremont, NH.

The inaugural season, featuring a series of races at New Hampshire speedways, will begin Memorial Day weekend, May 26, with the running of the “David’s House 106” at Monadnock Speedway, Winchester, NH. “WOW!” said Mike Parks, President of the GSPSS. “The turn out far exceeded what we expected. With three meetings spread out over the state of New Hampshire there were over 35 Pro Stock race teams represented.”

Well known racers Babe Branscombe, Louie Mechilides, Barry Gray, Jimmy Renfrew, Jay Sands, Fran Colson, Rich Eaton, and Jake Vanada are just a few veteran pro-stock racers that were on hand. “We were able to cover a lot of ground on some rule concerns and there will be some changes made,” Parks said. “We wanted to listen to the years of experience that attended the meetings. It’s important to listen to the competitor.”

Whelen Modified Car Owner Roger Hill Passes

Roger Hill Fielded Cars For More Than Two Decades

Daytona Beach, FL — The NASCAR Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tours lost a member of the family Thursday after Roger Hill, owner of the No. 79 and No. 19 cars, passed away following a brief illness.

Hill and his wife, Sandra, have owned cars that competed in the Whelen Modified Tour since the 1980s. Based in Westfield, N.C., Hill’s team – Hillbilly Racing – trekked to the northeast to compete full-time in the Whelen Modified Tour year after year. Since the Whelen Southern Modified Tour was formed in 2005, the team has also often competed in those events on weekends that did not conflict with the northern-based tour.

“Roger will be greatly missed as a competitor in both modified tours,” said NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Series Director Chad Little. “But it’s his passion for the tours that will be missed the most. His dedication to NASCAR modified racing is nearly unparalleled.”
